JAMSTEC Research Vehicles Please see the poster for details. ROV HYPER-DOLPHIN ROV KAIKO Mk-Ⅳ HOV SHINKAI 6500 depth:6,500m from 1989 AUV URASHIMA depth:4,500m from 1999 depth:7,000m from 2013 depth:3,500m from 2000 AUV JINBEI AUV YUMEIRUKA AUV OTOHIME depth:3,000m from 2012 depth:3,000m from 2012 depth:3,000m from
Operational Framework JAMSTEC is now operating 7 research vessels in cooperation with private companies such as Nippon Marine Enterprises Ltd. In order to accumulate know-how on research cruises and develop human resources, JAMSTEC hires crew for HAKUHO MARU directly. Multi-year contract MARITEC Multi-year contract CDEX Operated by JAMSTEC-hired crew Multi-year contract Marine technicians 5 vessels & Vehicles Total operational & technical support HAKUHO MARU D/V CHIKYU subcontract 3 rd Parties
Topics of KAIMEI length overall : 100.5m from scientists 27 crew 6
Topics of KAIMEI Water sampling system with CTD sampling at 9,800 m Boring Machine System (BMS) obtained a sample of 12.3 m Long piston corer obtained a 24m core with 30m-piston corer Then tried with 40m-piston corer lost at the water depth of 4,000 m CTD depth 10,500 m BMS depth 3,000 m 40m-piston corer depth 11,000 m 7
Topics of KAIMEI Three-mode multi-channel seismic system(mcs) Because of the water leak from scratches on streamer cable, we can use 50% of the streamer cable for now. Then we are having discussions on this failure with the manufacturer and aim at achieving complete recovery in next fiscal year. Gantry Crane Streamer cable winch x 4 Tail Buoy Paravane 2D (12,000m) 3D (3,000m 4) HR3D (300m 20) 8
Topics of SHINKAI 6500 She accomplished 1,500 dives as of June 5, Her first dive was on June 5, We are preparing for her operation with oneman pilot and two observers. We are currently training the second female pilot. 9
Topics of ROVs HYPER-DOLPHIN KAIKO Mk-Ⅳ Depth:4,500m from 1999 Depth:7,000m from 2013 Both of the ROVs are running smoothly. But KAIKO s umbilical cable strength has declined, so we made a new one using another material. 10
Occurrence of wave undulations Main Functions of Cables 1. Transmission of Power and Signal 2. Durability for Mechanical Stress and Water Pressure The Problem of umbilical cable Occurrence of wave undulation Compression characteristic in FRP rod (polymer fibers) causes wave undulation The survey found that difference of compressibility between inside and outside of FRP rod outer layer causes wave undulation Degree of wave undulation depends on the length of pitch of FRP rod outer layer, therefore, we can minimize the wave undulation by adjusting the pitch length of FRP rod outer layer 11
UROV-11K full depth trial It dived to 10,900 m in depth and obtained various data and 4K camera images on May 14 th But it could not return to the mother ship We will introduce this detail on day 3 JAMSTEC trial of 11,000 m UROV. 12
AUV URASHIMA AUV JINBEI AUVs depth:3,500m from 2000 AUV YUMEIRUKA depth:3,000m from 2012 AUV OTOHIME depth:3,000m from 2012 depth:3,000m from 2012 URASHIMA and JINBEI are open to researchers all over Japan. YUMEIRUKA and OTOHIME are built for technology development in JAMSTEC. Therefore, they aren t open to researchers. 13
Taking on Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE The Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE is a global competition challenging teams to advance deep-sea technologies for autonomous, fast and highresolution ocean exploration. JAMASTEC engineers under 35 years old are participating in this competition as part of human resource development. 14

Arctic Research Vessel (Icebreaker Research Vessel) We conduct observations and investigations in the Arctic region, which is important for global climate change and future prediction, impact assessment on global warming and weather around Japan. We are aiming to build a Polar Class 4 Arctic Research Vessel to do further, and we are requesting budget from the government. Collecting sample in low temperature and high latitude Under-ice survey If a budget will be approved fortunately, it will take about 5 years to build a new icebreaker. 17
