EEEjr01 NANYANG RESEARCH PROGRAMME (JUNIOR RESEARCHER) Project Synopses 2018 EEEjr01 Gamification of Educational Modules - Digital Electronics This project requires students to develop an gaming app to make learning of basic concepts in digital electronics fun and mentally engaging. Students opting for this project should have the following interests: - game design - app programming (Android) - basic electronics Students shall exercise creativity in designing the gaming aspects, which include storyboarding plus the UI look and feel. School of Electrical & Electronic Lim Meng Hiot (Assoc Prof) Keen interest in electronics and app programming. Basic knowledge would be a definite advantage though not a necessity. Students must be willing to invest the time to learn should they lack the required knowledge. Interest in app programming.
EEEjr02 EEEjr02 Water Dielectric Resonator Antennas Water has a lot of interesting features: transparent, flexible, and readily available. In addition, it has very high dielectric constant and potentially low loss. Therefore, antennas based on water can be compact in size and easily reconfigurable. This project is to study a suitable dielectric resonator antenna based on pure water, which can be used in wireless local area network (WLAN). Extensive simulations will be conducted to determine the suitable shape of the water container so that the antenna can operate at a few useful frequencies. A prototype may be fabricated near the end of the project to verify the design concept. School of Electrical & Electronic Shen Zhongxiang (Assoc Prof)
MAEjr01 MAEjr01 3D Printing of Kagome Sandwich Structures Kagamore is an open cell lattice structure found in many natural minerals' molecular arrangements' and has been expolited in design several designs including cane baskets as strong and stiff structures with minumum weight. Here in the project using modern day 3D printing machines, using either polymers or metals a combined 2D - 3D Kagamoe sandwich structure will be designed and fabircated for characterisation through instrumented laboratory testing. School of Mechanical & Aerospace Sridhar Idapalapati (Assoc Prof) Strong motivation to learn and experiment, design skills, 3D printing, manufacturing, Art and Design.
MAEjr02 MAEjr02 Oil-Waterfall Graphic Curtain Water graphic live curtain as displayed in Osaka station ( seems pretty attractive. Two-dimensional image is presented by some arrays of water drop from controlled tank. However, this display is limited to non-colored display and fast-moving image. This project will investigate the feasibility to use oil as a media instead of air as usually used in the common waterfall curtain. It is expected that by using oil, the movement of water drop is much slower and in addition different types of oil (with different color) will result in more colorful images. School of Mechanical & Aerospace Tegoeh Tjahjowidodo (Asst Prof) Basic Electronics and Programming.
NIEjr01 NIEjr01 Who is Faster, 1n, 2n, or 4n, in Growth and Cell Fate Reprogramming? Development involves a process of defining cell fates by confining gene expression patterns. When a zygote develops into an adult, the stem cells differentiate into different tissue cells. The developmental processes are possible to be reverted by cell fate reprogramming, either by artificially inducing pluripotent stem cells, or by spontaneous biological processes including the production of germ cells or regeneration. Cell fate establishment relies on specific gene expression patterns in which certain sets of genes are on and the rest are off. The transcription status of each gene is largely regulated by epigenetic mechanisms involving DNA methylation, histone modification, histone variant replacement and nucleosome positioning. Most of such epigenetic modifications are reversible. When a cell fate is reprogrammed, the epigenetics marks on each allele from both chromosomes have to be reset. Tetraploid (4n) organisms have doubled chromosome number as that from diploids (2n), and in most of cases tetraploids show advantages in development and growth evidenced by larger size. But in term of reprogramming cell fate, it is reasonable to speculate that it would be more difficult in tetraploid due to more chromosome copies; Whereas the haploids (1n) may have advantages in fate reprogramming. In contrast to mammals, plant developmental scheme is much more flexible. Plants have impressive abilities to regenerate damaged parts by reprogramming the cell fate at wounding sites. In this project we take advantages of wound-induced plant regeneration as a good model to understand cell fate reprogramming by comparing regeneration rate of 1n, 2n and 4n plants, and subsequent influence on growth. Expression levels of selected candidate genes for tissue identities, epigenetic machineries, cell proliferation and growth will be investigated. National Institute of Education Chen Zhong (Asst Prof) Strong interest in bench work.
NIEjr02 NIEjr02 Exploring Local Micro-Climates With Open-Source Sensors You will be using open-source environmental sensors (based on Arduinos) to build a dataset of the microclimate around your home, over a period of time spanning the duration of the project. You and your team-mate will use the datasets to compare the microclimate from your two respective sites, and make reasoned inferences and analyses regarding the variation in the patterns of the data observed. The sensors can be configured to measure variables such as light, temperature, and humidity. They can be self powered and can be configured to run-off regular handphone battery-pack chargers. For extension activities, you and your team-mate could explore modifying and customising the sensors, and / or modifying the source code, and / or thinking about diferent ways of housing the sensors and weatherproofing them, possibly using fabricated parts which you yourselves design. You wil come away with a more informed understanding of how and why microclimate varies over time, using empirical data gathered from your respective local (home) environments. Your study can contribute to wider datasets which the research team are already building in Singapore as well as in other countries in ASEAN. National Institute of Education Lim Yang Teck Kenneth (Dr) None specific. You should be prepared to analyse the data you generate using freely available statistical tools found online, as part of your final report and presentation.
NIEjr03 NIEjr03 Secondary School Students Perceptions of the National Physical Fitness Award (NAPFA) This study seeks to investigate how the National Physical Fitness Award (NAPFA) is perceived or experienced by Singaporean secondary school students. As there are no empirical studies or data available to public to clarify Singaporean students positive and negative experiences of NAPFA, it is unknown whether students NAPFA experiences or perceptions are different between gender groups or school levels. Participants will complete an online survey on their NAPFA experiences and perceptions. The findings of the present survey are considered useful for PE teachers to understand what students experienced and perceived during the NAPFA and improve their PE lessons for the NAPFA test. Findings in this study will reveal in-depth insights of Singaporean students perception and experience of NAPFA to improve existing practices for students better learning. National Institute of Education Masato Kawabata (Asst Prof) Anyone who is interested in exercise or physical activity is welcome. Anyone who is interested in exercise or physical activity is welcome.
NIEjr04 NIEjr04 Effects of Music on Runner's Experience and Performance During 800m Running: Secondary School Students This study examines the music effects on Secondary School students middle-distance running performance and experiences by conducting experiments in a laboratory. Participants will be running three 800m on a treadmill in different music and no music conditions to explore the differences when applied between genders on attentional focus, perceived rate of physical exertion, heart rate, exercise enjoyment, and electroencephalogram (EEG). Effects of music on runner s experience and performance will be examined from the perspectives of gender and type of music. National Institute of Education Masato Kawabata (Asst Prof) Anyone who is interested in exercise or physical activity is welcome. Anyone who is interested in exercise or physical activity is welcome.
NIEjr05 NIEjr05 Remote Measurement System We will be doing a project related to the IoT which is defined (by Wikipedia) as The Internet of Things (IoT) is the internetworking of physical devices, vehicles (also referred to as "connected devices" and "smart devices"), buildings and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity that enable these objects to collect and exchange data. We will be learning how to build a solar powerered electronic system using a microcontroller ultimately for use in collecting data like temperature, rain, sunlight etc and relaying to the internet. For this project we will learn how to program a microcontroller and build simple sensors to make measurements. National Institute of Education Paul Lee Choon Keat (Assoc Prof) Should have an interest in Physics and Programming. Skills in Programming an advantage.
NIEjr06 NIEjr06 Development of Graphene / Metal Interfaces for Large Spin-Orbit Interaction Spintronics (means spin + electronics) deals with the spin of electron for the development of futuristic logic and memory devices with ultra-high speed and high storage capacity. To achieve futuristic spintronics devices, high spin current to charge current and charge current to spin current interconversion efficiency is need. Till date, maximum inter-conversion efficiency is reported to be 33% in tungsten and need to be improved to realize spin devices for practical applications. To enhance this interconversion efficiency, system with large and tunable spin-orbit interactions is required. In the present proposal, we propose a 2 dimensional graphene / metal interface which can result in the large spin orbit interaction due to the presence of free electron in the graphene and difference in the chemical potential at the metal-graphene interfaces. Hence, in the present proposed research, graphene interfacing with metal is opted to develop new cost effective and non-toxic high spin orbit materials. Approach can help in the progress of the spin-orbit engineering to achieve large charge to spin conversion efficiency which is highly desired to accelerate this emerging field of research and application. The proposed research not only places an academic impact but also create a technological impact. National Institute of Education Rohit Medwal (Dr) Good hands-on the experimental science and keen to learn basic Physics and Chemistry.
SCBEjr01 SCBEjr01 Cradle-to-Gate Life Cycle Analysis of Pharmaceutical Excipients Pharmaceutical excipients are the ingredients used in the preparation of oral solid dosage form of drugs (e.g. tablets, capsules). This project aims to develop a life cycle inventory database of pharmaceutical excipients that exhibit green characteristics. The project will require extensive literature review, data mining, and computer simulation. School of Chemical & Biomedical Kunn Hadinoto Ong (Assoc Prof) Life cycle assessment analysis, environmental sustainability awareness.
SCBEjr02 SCBEjr02 Developing a 3-D Printable Stage for Microscopy The recent rapid prototyping technology such as 3D printing makes it possible to quickly and easily fabricating custom parts at low cost for building one-off prototype. In this project, we leverage 3D printing technology to build a low-cost, 3D-printable stage for microscopy. We will design and build fixture to hold glass slide, Petri dish and cell culture chamber. School of Chemical & Biomedical Pui Tze Sian (Dr)
SPMSjr01 SPMSjr01 Visualizing Scientific Concepts in Nanoelectronics The objective of the project is to visualize complex and abstract scientific concepts in nanoelectronics by designing 3-dimensional (3D) images and/or videos. Visualizing scientific concept and principle in nanoelectronics is extremely crucial in scientific studies. In fact, these visualizations, including image and video, are always used in research articles published in scientific journals. From equipment schematic to scattering mechanism and to working principle, they are all means of visualization in order to pitch the difficult and abstract research concepts to readers. Without the images and videos, research work cannot even be understood by scientific researchers in the same research field. However, visualizing scientific concepts can be challenging. In order to construct a good scientific visualization and elaborate the concepts, sufficient understanding on the concepts is a must factor. Furthermore, a good artistic design can also significantly empower the visualizations. In this project, the student will focus on visualizing schematics and working principle of nanoelectronics using the 3D modeling software. The intended type of nanoelectronic device to visualize is the field-effect transistor utilizing nanomaterials. The field-effect transistor is a vital device structure in information technology. It uses an electric field to control the electrical conductivity of a material and store binary information inside. The project will be structured into different levels: (a) Modeling atomic structures of nanomaterials, such as ultrathin film; (b) Design a field-effect transistor structure and the electrical circuits; (c) Rendering images of electron injection and electron scattering process with different perspectives. (d) Making a video to demonstrate the working principle of a field-effect transistor. Some representative images can be found on my group website Throughout the project, the student will be educated with scientific knowledge of physics, technological concepts of field-effect transistor and skills of 3D modeling. This knowledge and skills will be very useful for the further career of the participants. For instance, the student who wants to do research in future will find that the skills are useful for publishing the scientific paper and making a presentation. For the student who wants to work in the field or industry mixed with science, technology, and design, it will be the best fit and a great opportunity.
