3 Technical Industrial Placement Opportunities We currently have a number of Technical Industrial Placement Opportunities available at our Loughborough site, Leicestershire. These placements offer an ideal opportunity to work in a technical environment within a Health Care business. We have opportunities within the following groups: Analytical Chemists for Research and Development, Early Pharmaceutics & Technology and Quality Operations Process Engineers for Product & Process Engineering Regulatory Officer in Regulatory Affairs IT Technologist for Laboratory Data Systems Quality Engineer for Quality Operations Scientists for Process Development, Formulation, Early Pharmaceutics & Technology Scientist for Process Development As part of Research and Development, the Process Development group support the pilot and large scale manufacture of pressurised metered dose inhalers (pmdis). They are involved in analysing data and producing scientific reports on studies carried out in the laboratory and manufacturing lines. They also present data and recommendations to technical teams throughout the organisation. The placement shall offer an ideal opportunity to work in a technical environment within a Health Care Business. You will work within a dynamic team orientated group and become involved in laboratory experiments and the execution of the

4 design of experiments on production lines. You will also be involved in analysing data and report writing.

5 Analytical Chemists for Research and Development, Early Pharmaceutics & Technology and Quality Operations Analysts in our laboratories play a vital role in our R&D and Quality activities, ensuring our products meet or exceed the required pharmaceutical standards. You will be part of a project team providing support to our existing products or working on new development or feasibility projects. A typical day may consist of testing the stability of a pharmaceutical product or supporting modifications to existing marketed products or developing test methods for analysing new APIs using a variety of analytical techniques used to evaluate pharmaceutical dosage forms, including HPLC, GC, UV and IR. Our groups all work on Inhalation products in the following areas, all of which have positions available for 2006: Rapid Screening / New Technology Development (EP&T) This group works at the very start of the product development cycle, with a role of developing new analytical techniques and assessing the feasibility for progressing candidate molecules through to full development Development (R&D) The AR&D group is part of the global inhalation drug delivery (IDD) department. The UK IDD department delivers the full development cycle for products, from early stage formulation to process development and transfer to production. Quality Operations (QO) Completion of commercial stability Support product changes

6 Complaints Manufacturing support Process Engineers for Product & Process Engineering Your role will be to provide support to the production module tasks including: Investigation of quality issues and generation of documentation Ensure collection and reporting of manufacturing indices: CCT, WIP, OEE, Schedule Adherence, Product Robustness Metric Completion of a supervised project that could involve commissioning of new equipment or implementation of a process improvement You will need to possess the following skills for this role: Good communication skills Good team player, with ability to work with all Company personnel Potential to take on leadership role as required during projects Ability to problem solve by thinking objectively and logically tial to maintain simultaneous progress on all projects and tasks ility to understand and apply appropriate P&PU tools and techniques

7 Quality Engineer for Quality Operations Quality Operations is focused on quality issues and effective, robust processes to reduce manufacturing variations. It is a demanding environment, as our Quality Engineers have to support the site in the drive to ensure we deliver consistent quality products that match our customer needs. Continuous improvement is critical in the ongoing drive for competitive advantage. You will be responsible for supporting manufacturing in resolving quality problems, establishing effective continuous improvement processes, and developing robust systems. Examples of past projects performed by IPs include: Pre-production quality test surveys resulting in a 50% time reduction and increased productivity Process capability studies / experimental design to identify process variability. IT Technologist for Laboratory Data Systems Laboratory Data Systems is responsible for managing the networked R&D systems that are used by the R&D groups on the Loughborough site. The group also provides bespoke e-solutions for the R&D group. Responsibilities include developing e-solutions to R&D end user problems (these may involve programming or software configuration) and to provide technical support / systems administration for our networked R&D IT systems. The following skill sets are required for the position: Operating word processing / database / laboratory information systems Experience of Java, C++, SQL and VBA programming. Use of MS Access and Visual Basic essential. A good general knowledge with the ability to understand various technical

8 and regulatory regulations, technical terminology and procedures. Regulatory Officer in Regulatory Affairs The Regulatory Department is responsible for obtaining and maintaining the required license for pharmaceutical products. They are also responsible for providing European Regulatory Operations support for 3M Branded Pharmaceutical products and supporting the Drug Delivery System business in developing new products and preparing submissions on behalf of our customers. Working as part of the Regulatory Affairs team you will become involved with: Providing Regulatory advice throughout product life cycle Providing support in developing registration strategies Collecting, reviewing and editing data on development projects and prepare submissions to Regulatory Authorities and DDS customers Dealing with queries on submissions which come into the company from the respective regulatory authorities and DDS customers Assisting preparation of variations and renewals to current licenses

9 Scientists for Formulation and Early Pharmaceutics & Technology Scientist for Early Pharmaceutics & Technology The EP&T group performs exploratory research and development into new formulations, analytical methodologies and device technologies in the field of Drug Delivery Systems. The formulation group works at the very start of the product development cycle. Their role is to develop new formulations and assess of the feasibility for progressing the candidate molecule through to full development. Scientist for Formulation The Product Development group are involved in the development of inhalation dosage forms for all 3 rd party projects post feasibility. Activities include formulation optimisation, manufacture of tox and clinical supplies in conjunction with process scale-up, design and management of stability studies, coordination of regulatory driven investigations, generation of regulatory documentation and customer interaction.

Previous and Current Students Here are some experiences of past and present Industrial Placement students who upon completion of their degree came back to work for us Tamsen 2005/2006 BSc (Hons) Forensic Science Nottingham Trent University Current Industrial Placement student in Early Pharmaceutics & Technology I am currently involved in an extensive training program to enable me to perform testing of pharmaceutical dosage forms using bench techniques to support stability, development studies and batch release using instruments such as HPLC, GC, UV and LC-MS. Later in the year, I shall participate in the development of new and modified analytical methods in line with the company s procedures, data analysis and report writing. In the short time of being here, I have already gained valuable lab experience and skills, in particular with more advanced instrumentation compared to university equipment. I have a better appreciation for how pharmaceutical companies and laboratories work, especially GMP, safety, etc. I have already been given small responsibilities which have made me feel an important member to the team In terms of first impressions, I am currently receiving full support during my training to ensure that I understand what I am doing and everyone within and outside of the team are always willing to help. There are plenty of social events and activities where I have met lots of friendly people in the company.

11 Louisa 1998/1999 BSc (Hons) Biomedical Chemistry Sheffield Hallam University, 2000 Senior Scientist I chose a placement at 3M Health Care because it s a big, reputable company, it offers a range of opportunities, across metered dose inhalers (MDIs), creams and tablets - and, importantly, it treats students as permanent members of the team so I was never held back. The initial three months extensive training covering all bench work tests and analytical instruments (theory and practical) was a massive help in my final year. Compared to my friends, I had one of the best placements. I was thrilled to return and build a career with 3M. Now, career plans are regularly discussed at appraisals, giving me opportunities to work on different teams or move across into a different department. Julie 1997/1998 BSc (Hons) Science Loughborough University, 1999 Advanced Scientist I was a placement student during , from Loughborough University. I spent the majority of my year working on MDI s. The rest of the year I was part of the MPS (Marketed Product Support) group where I gained experience of analytical testing on a range of other products including tablets, capsules, and liquids. Overall, I found the year enjoyable, demanding, but rewarding. I enjoyed seeing the theory from lectures being put into practice, as well as learning about GMP and GLP, and getting to use up-to-date equipment, and technologies. I also

12 received training in skills that put me in a good position for my final year such as Time Management, Presentation skills and Team building. I m now back, at 3M Healthcare, working as an analyst in the IDD analytical department, on a new MDI product for the treatment of asthma, this involves stability testing, method validation and investigational work. Daljit 1993/1994 BSc (Hons) Applied Chemistry De Montfort University,1995 Specialist I was a placement student for 13 months within the Analytical Development Department during 1993 to I was fully trained at the start on all types of tests and instruments to be used to test metered dose inhalers (MDI), tablets and creams. Even though I went on to work primarily on MDI products, the training I received on other dosage forms allowed me to support other areas such as Quality Operations. The type of work completed during the year was stability testing, investigational studies and optimization of a new filling line. The year also allowed me to develop further my understanding of analytical instrumentation and gave me the opportunity to use equipment that was not available at universities. The year out was an eye opener as it allowed me to develop an understanding in many areas, such as: how pharmaceutical companies operate, the documentation systems used, the development of asthma products and an appreciation of the type of data required by regulatory bodies for approval. During the year I made some great friends and as the company had a young workforce, this provided a friendly, lively environment to work in it. The year out

13 was a great character building experience and it helped me to choose my career path going forward. I am now a Rapid Screening Group Leader within the Early Pharmaceutics and Technology Department. Catherine 1994/1995 BSc (Hons) Chemistry with Analytical Chemistry Loughborough University, 1996 Senior Analyst I was a placement student at 3M Health Care during the academic year and my year was spent in the R&D analytical laboratory. After undergoing initial training to use the laboratory equipment such as HPLC and GC I was involved in the testing of non-cfc aerosols. The work was mainly stability testing and testing of manufacturing validation samples. This involved the preparation of samples, the setting up of equipment and subsequent write up of results. The good things about my placement year were that it gave me an insight into industry and work experience in a laboratory environment. The people at 3M were very friendly and always willing to help. On returning to University I found it easier to complete any modules where we were learning about instruments as I had been using them on my year out. I returned to 3M after I completed my degree and I have worked on a number of different projects. I am now a Senior Analyst in the analytical laboratory and lead a team carrying out stability testing of all conventional dose products manufactured by 3M.

14 What you need to apply for an Industrial Placement with 3M Health Care Academic requirements: You will need to have clear demonstration of high academic achievement in the first year of your degree (>60%) or GCE or VCE A Levels (or equivalent) with a minimum tariff of 240 UCAS points, including Mathematics or Chemistry and another Science subject. In addition, we would typically expect Mathematics and English GCSEs at Grade C or above Currently studying for an Honours degree in Chemistry / Applied Chemistry / Pharmaceutical Sciences or a combination of Chemistry with another biological or physical science subject (Mechanical / Chemical / Manufacturing Engineering degree is required for the Engineer roles and a Computer Science degree is required for the Data Systems role) General personal requirements Good analytical skills, supported by good written and verbal communication skills.
