3 Media The 2013 edition of our Summer School Media deals with social media as a social, cultural, political, aesthetic, technological and economic phenomenon in two main fields of research and interest: a) the views, approaches and forms of social media culture, and b) the commercial use of social media as seen in the global sports industry. The overall objective of the school is to assist students in gaining the conceptual frameworks, knowledge, and skill sets necessary in social media research and help them develop and implement projects, understand the process of integrating new media technologies into different fields of use and solve complex problems related to social media culture. In the first part (July 22-25(morning)), the course focuses on various theories about social media use and effects, as well as methods for studying social media phenomena from communication studies, visual cultural studies, performance studies and aesthetics. In particular, we will analyse digital (social) media forms such as remix, YouTube as communication and expressive channel, social networking for personal and professional use, and political uses of social media such as Twitter and Facebook. In the second part (July 25 (afternoon) - 26), the course examines the relationship between new (digital) media, social media marketing and the global sport industry. The sessions will include an introduction to sport marketing and sport consumer (prosumer) behavior relative to the digital transition. A focus will be the dynamics of digital technology in the sport industry including key platforms such as HDTV, Internet, and mobile technologies. Elements of streaming video and audio, itv, e-commerce and digital marketing will also be addressed. In addition, the relationship of new media to current trends in sport marketing and sponsorship will be examined.

4 Media Besides lecture-discussions, part of the course will be devoted to group projects. Working in groups of 3-4, students will produce their own study of a chosen social media phenomenon that will be presented at the end of the course. Reading materials will be provided. Students will use their laptops, tablet-pcs or smartphones for group works, projects and online activities. Internet connection will be available. 5 Bayreuth Bayreuth is a large town in Northern Bavaria on the Red Main river in a valley between the Franconian Jura and the Fichtelgebirge mountains. The town s roots date back to the year 1194 and Bayreuth now has a population of about 72,000 citizens and about 11,000 students at its university. The town is world-famous for its annual festival die Bayreuther Festspiele at which operas by the 19th century German composer Richard Wagner are performed. Located in the heart of nature, Bayreuth is renowned for its variety of sports and cultural activities throughout the year. University Campus of Bayreuth Bayreuther Festspiele A specialty the region further has to offer is its art of beerbrewing nowhere in the world can one find such a regional proximity to breweries where the famous Bavarian beer is produced. The University Campus often refered to as a Campus within nature is built similarly to campuses of American Universities. Every building is within a few minutes walking distance. Students can easily engage with each other through summer schools and their regular studies.
