ADVANCED MANUFACTURING TRAINING FACILITIES CREATE REAL RESULTS FOR A NEW ECONOMY
THE REALITY Our global economy pulls Americans in many directions, but one truth unites people across the country: more jobs - and better jobs - are a good thing for everyone. Job growth benefits not only employees, but also their families, their communities, their cities, and their regions. Good jobs in some industries, of course, have been harder to come by lately. Hotbutton issues such as industrialization and globalization are at the forefront of our national economic conversation, and while many industries are booming, others have never recovered from the 2008 recession. A fouryear college degree is an unattainable goal for many people, but job opportunities for those without a college education are shrinking, and available jobs may not afford the same middle-class standard of living as similar jobs in the past. Numerous studies report that the millennial generation is, in fact, on track to be the first generation to be economically worseoff than their parents. GREENVILLE TECHNICAL CENTER CENTER FOR MANUFACTURING INNOVATION
THE GOOD NEWS The news isn t all bleak, however. According to Manufacturer s Alliance for Productivity and Innovation (MAPI), though manufacturing has yet to recover fully from the 2008 recession, the industry is predicted to return to prerecession levels by the end of 2017 (non-high tech manufacturing should rebound by 2018.) Despite ongoing economic uncertainty, the US is still the world s largest manufacturing economy, and number of US manufacturing employees has been growing steadily since 2010, with a commensurate growth in production. Contrary to headlines, over the last several years the trend has been towards onshoring and reshoring of American manufacturing jobs. Increasing overseas wages, lower energy prices, a highly skilled US workforce, and the desire for shorter supply chains have led many manufacturers to focus their growth efforts on US facilities and American workers. In fact, over 3.5 million manufacturing jobs will need to be filled in the next decade. CENTRAL CAROLINA TECHNICAL COLLEGE ADVANCED MANUFACTURING TRAINING CENTER WAVES OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY ARE REMAKING AMERICA S ADVANCED INDUSTRIES THOSE INDUSTRIES LIKE AUTO, AEROSPACE, AND MEDICAL DEVICE MANUFACTURING THAT DEPEND ON HIGH LEVELS OF R&D INVESTMENT AND SIZABLE STEM- KNOWLEDGEABLE WORKFORCES. -BROOKINGS INSTITUTE
20% INDUSTRIAL WORKFORCE GROWTH SINCE 2009 Much of this growth is taking place in the Southeast. Major growth markets include fast-growing southern cities such as Savannah, GA; Columbia, SC; and Charleston, SC. Bolstered by the automotive and aerospace industries, among others, each of these cities have seen their industrial workforce grow by 20% between 2009 and 2016, and the region currently has the highest number of workers in the US employed in advanced industries. Raleigh, Charlotte, and Atlanta are among the fastest-growing cities in the nation in 2017; SC is one of the fastest-growing states. The problems facing the manufacturing industry may be multifaceted, but the opportunities are abundant. NEWBERRY COUNTY CENTER AT PIEDMONT TECHNICAL COLLEGE
CENTRAL CAROLINA TECHNICAL COLLEGE ADVANCED MANUFACTURING TRAINING CENTER BRIDGING THE GAP: RELEVANT TRAINING, REAL RESULTS Now poised at the intersection of significant challenges and real opportunities for economic growth, we encounter an interesting set of questions. If evolving technology is rapidly changing the way we manufacture goods, how do we re-tool to address a new economy? How do we train the next generation workforce? How do we give potential employees the skills they need not only to survive, but also to thrive? PREPARING INDIVIDUALS FOR CAREERS IN RAPIDLY CHANGING ADVANCED INDUSTRIES IS GOING TO REQUIRE RADICALLY DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO EDUCATION AND SKILLS TRAINING, WHETHER IT BE NEW APPROACHES TO COMPETENCY BASED CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS, SHORT- TERM BOOTCAMP, OR ENTIRELY NEW ONLINE SOLUTIONS. -BROOKINGS INSTITUTE
SPARTANBURG COMMUNITY COLLEGE CHEROKEE ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY CENTER In the 1980s, community colleges trained a new workforce in computer technology. In the 1990s and 2000s, a surge in the healthcare industry required a similar influx of skilled professionals, and allied health programs flourished. Today, among many opportunities, one prevailing trend is towards advanced manufacturing training programs. Our nation s community colleges have been instrumental in addressing these questions for decades. The community college model consistently excels at helping workers respond to economic opportunities by anticipating where the needs are, and creating curricula to re-train workers accordingly. It is a nimble system that responds rapidly to opportunity.
CRAVEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE BOSCH & SIEMENS ADVANCED MANUFACTURING CENTER THE JOBS THAT ARE CREATED TODAY ARE AT A HIGHER TECHNICAL LEVEL, WITH COMMENSURATE PAY. IN TALKING WITH COMPANIES IN SOUTH CAROLINA, I FIND THAT THEY HAVE THE JOBS. THESE JOBS ARE ALREADY HERE. WE JUST NEED EDUCATION STREAMS TO PUSH PEOPLE TO GREATER TECHNICAL DEPTH TO FILL THEM. -LAINE MEARS, THE BMW SMARTSTATE CHAIR IN AUTOMOTIVE MANUFACTURING- CU ICAR Carolina Commerce Department s SC Ready program is designed to connect manufacturers with specific skill training programs. Many are also funded in part by EDA grants and loans from the US Economic Development Association. In NC, the Golden Leaf Foundation has been a frequent investor in job training programs.
BUILDING SPACES FOR THE FUTURE OF ADVANCED MANUFACTURING (THIS IS CERTAINLY NOT OUR FATHER S OLDSMOBILE!) Today s manufacturing facilities bear little resemblance to those of our grandfathers era. Advanced manufacturing is cleaner, safer, and faster than ever before, with a more consistent quality of product. The tools are infinitely more intricate and interconnected, and their operation and maintenance requires a high-level skill set commensurate with their technological complexity. Training spaces for this new environment are a relatively new building type, and LS3P is proud to have been at the forefront of developing best practices for these designs in collaboration with a number of our community college partners. Above all, these facilities must be designed for flexibility. Generous, durable, multifunctional spaces allow schools to reconfigure as the tools and equipment change so that facilities can evolve along with the technology. In many cases, these training spaces are also transparent, putting the learning and technology on full display to highlight a new paradigm of advanced manufacturing and the opportunities it provides. CENTRAL CAROLINA TECHNICAL COLLEGE ADVANCED MANUFACTURING TRAINING CENTER
This new leading-edge center for advanced manufacturing technologies supports education, research, and entrepreneurship while training a highly skilled workforce. The 106,000 SF facility, the first building on a new International Style campus, established a distinctive architectural character for the campus and now serves as a visual icon of modern manufacturing. The CMI offers technologies such as CNC machines, EDM, multipleaxis lathes, welding, rapid prototype equipment for 3-D Modeling, stereo lithography, selective laser sintering, and deposition modeling. Greenville Tech and Clemson University are partnering to create collaborative programs involving local industry partners. GREENVILLE TECHNICAL CENTER CENTER FOR MANUFACTURING INNOVATION GREENVILLE, SC In addition to instructional spaces, the facility offers manufacturers a place to build their own prototypes as well as incubator space for startups. Other program areas include offices, conference and breakout rooms in a variety of sizes, an open learning commons to engage visitors and students. High-bay manufacturing spaces accommodate equipment such as mills, grinders, and lathes, with adjacent low-bay space for materials storage. Specialized labs include mechatronics, manufacturing pilot line/integration, innovation labs, and research space. A showroom provides a space to highlight student work and emerging technologies. The facility is designed to achieve a minimum of Two Green Globes certification.
This adaptive reuse project converted an existing Walmart into a stateof-the-art higher education facility for Piedmont Technical College. The project is part of an urban renewal effort for the neighborhood, and provides space for the college s expanding continuing education programs. NEWBERRY COUNTY CENTER AT PIEDMONT TECHNICAL COLLEGE NEWBERRY, SC The renovation creates a welcoming facility with a collegiate look and feel, serving students, educators and the wider community. The new center features a community auditorium, patient care and training centers, flexible industrial arts workshops, a veterinarian technician wing, a state of the art library, and a testing center. The design encourages collaborative learning among students and faculty. The LEED Certifiied facility is a showcase for sustainability. Sustainable features include daylighting, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, and a site design which reduces the heat island effect with green spaces.
This 103,000 SF adaptive reuse project converted a 1980s-era Wal- Mart into a state-of-the-art facility for materials and industrial training programs. The newly renovated space houses mechatronics labs, robotics, computer science programs, and an entire suite for training perspective employees in automotive tire manufacturing. Sustainability and flexibility were key design goals. The façade includes metal rainscreen systems, glass curtain walls, natural stone, and a free-standing turbine sculpture. The turbine creates a signature element which provides a distinctive entrance as well as shading for the exterior plaza, library, and lounge. At the entry, a spacious lobby welcomes students and serves as a showcase for the applied technical classes within. CENTRAL CAROLINA TECHNICAL COLLEGE ADVANCED MANUFACTURING TRAINING CENTER SUMTER, SC Work included the demolition of the interior infrastructure, exterior components, portions of the expansive parking lot, and a new roof. The building also required new HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and data systems as well as structural upgrades. The big-box scale parking lot was redefined with a tree lined boulevard. Regional grasses, shrubs and trees were planted to create shaded court yards and plazas. Though the design maintained the structural walls and core framing of the building, several new openings along the front exterior were added to eliminate the big box feel of the building and increase natural daylight and views into the facility. CCTC is pursuing Two Green Globes Certification for sustainable design and operations.
SPARTANBURG COMMUNITY COLLEGE CHEROKEE ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY CENTER GAFFNEY, SC This project for Spartanburg Community College provided site analysis and conceptual design services for a new Advanced Technology Building. The facility houses academic classrooms and labs for mechatronics, allied technical, electrical, mechanical, automotive, HVAC, welding, machine tooling, and nuclear power curricula at the college s Cherokee Campus. The 27,500 SF building was designed to meet Two Green Globe sustainability standards. Working with the campus master plan, LS3P provided site analysis for several potential building locations. The project required bioretention areas, sustainable landscaping, a campus greenway connecting disparate sections of campus, and a reconfiguration of parking areas.
INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY CENTER AT TRI-COUNTY TECHNICAL COLLEGE ANDERSON, SC This Industrial Technology Center houses Tri-County Technical College s Welding, HVAC, and Building Construction programs. This facility renovated an existing 43,000 SF warehouse building which now houses classrooms, faculty offices, and three main industrial areas for each program of study with the possibility of future expansion space. Within the lab spaces, the design focused on flexibility and collaboration.
CRAVEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE BOSCH & SIEMENS ADVANCED MANUFACTURING CENTER NEW BERN, NC The 29,000 SF Bosch & Siemens Advanced Manufacturing Center at Craven Community College provides special training labs, a design lab, and classrooms for computer-driven manufacturing processes involving plastics and metals. A third CIM lab serves as a training center for specific manufacturing simulations. A 50-seat tiered auditorium provides computer-assisted lecture space for the Corporate Training Center. This facility integrates into CCC s Craven Early College program, a career-focused learn and earn high school that incorporates apprenticeship opportunities and provides students the opportunity to obtain a focused high school education and an Associate s Degree within five years. Pathways include engineering, manufacturing, information technology, allied health, and science.
The Applied Technologies Building was the second building to be constructed on Cape Fear Community College s North Campus in Castle Hayne, NC. The first building, a classroom/administration building, was also designed by LS3P. This facility contains approximately 116,000 SF of training space on two floors. Key programs include: CAPE FEAR COMMUNITY COLLEGE APPLIED TECHNOLOGIES BUILDING CASTLE HAYNE, NC Architectural Technology Computer Engineering Technology Electronics Engineering Technology Electrical Instrumentation Technology Industrial Maintenance Technology Interior Design Machining Technology Mechanical Engineering Technology Welding Technology CAD labs Biology and Physics lab General Classrooms
CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS It is important to remember that, in terms of educational investment in a highly skilled workforce, programs are not limited to community college systems, or even to college-age students. The real investment begins as early as elementary school with STEM programs which focus on critical thinking, computing, engineering, and other 21st Century skills. Many high schools now offer Career and Technical Education (CTE) options which help to bridge the gap between school and the workforce. Course offerings might include community college training or certification programs with credits and skills which transfer to four-year colleges, community colleges, or the workforce. Rural communities will benefit if the training is accompanied by jobs to keep their children in the community. Urban communities benefit because a CTE high school does not require buying a 40-acre site for athletics. NEWBERRY COUNTY CENTER AT PIEDMONT TECHNICAL COLLEGE
This project transformed a vacant Coke Bottling Plant into a state-ofthe-art facility for career and technology programs to provide space for a new model of education for area high school students. The building now houses career training programs such as culinary arts, electrical systems engineering, biopharmaceutical technology, health sciences, cosmetology, and business information technology. Support spaces include administrative offices, classrooms, labs, and a student commons area. VERNON MALONE COLLEGE CAREER ACADEMY RALEIGH, NC The program is centered around a dynamic bright orange wall that slices through the original building, adding a sense of vitality and movement beneath the new light wells which fill the space with daylight. This project represents an innovative collaboration between Wake County Public Schools and Wake Technical Community College. The school system inhabits the facility during the day and Wake Tech utilizes the facilities for technical programs during the evening.
The Center for Advanced Studies bridges the gap between high school and college, providing technical skills and training beyond the high school level. This new career and technical school is located on a 5-acre tract in front of the existing Wando High School campus, allowing both schools to share parking and transportation infrastructure. CENTER FOR ADVANCED STUDIES AT WANDO CHARLESTON, SC The 3-story, 125,000 SF academic building is primarily a CTE facility accommodating 600 students. The academy features administration areas; science and computer labs; and abundant classroom spaces for programs in cosmetology, biomedical science, film, multi-media and visual arts, childcare, health science engineering, horticulture, public safety, and EMS technology. Additional facilities include a 6,100 SF automotive technology building, a greenhouse, and an equipment storage building. This project is designed to LEED Silver specifications.
