Program 26 November Fall Meeting - The Human Factor Time Activity Reception Welcome by the chairperson Keynote speaker Heidi De Pauw, Managing Director Child Focus To be confirmed Cultivating security: an appealing epiphany or a recipe for defeat? 2 The Human Network Networking and drinks Speakers Chairperson The fall meeting will be chaired by Heidi De Pauw, Managing Director of Child Focus - European Centre for Missing and Sexually Exploited Children. With a master s degree in criminology and a post graduate degree in Human and Social Sciences, Heidi started her career as deputy advisor at the Ministry of Interior followed by various functions with a direct link to the prevention and care of missing and abused children. Over the years she has combined her professional career with roles in several nonprofit organizations and is co-author of various academic publications related to missing and abused children. Keynote speaker To be confirmed Cultivating security: an appealing epiphany or a recipe for defeat? Hugo Marynissen and Anne Bergmans will present how people view the safety culture in organizations and the human factor in this approach. They will illustrate the pitfalls and opportunities of adopting high reliability organisational principles to security management with case studies and examples. Hugo Marynissen is the academic director of the Executive PhD program at Antwerp Management School. He is also guest lecturer at various European universities such as University of Antwerp (Belgium), Campus Vesta (Belgium), Cranfield University (UK), HUB (Belgium), and Laurea University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki (Finland). He is the managing director and partner of PM Risk Crisis - Change, an agency specialised in risk and crisis management and communication. Since 2008 he has provided regular coaching and consultancy services in the field of risk and crisis management. In addition, he is the president of the CIP Institute, a non-profit organization bringing together scientists and practitioners from various disciplines in an inspiring and innovative platform to exchange and develop knowledge about the Complex and Interactive Processes (CIP) in the field of crisis. Hugo holds a Doctoral degree (DBA - Doctor of Business Administration) from Cranfield University School of Management (UK), and a Master s degree in Change Management from HEC Business School (France). The focus of his research is on the relationship between risk communication and risk perception within so-called High-Reliability Organizations. Anne Bergmans holds a PhD in sociology (2005). She is senior researcher and lecturer in Environmental Sociology and Sociology of Risk and Safety at the University of Antwerp. Anne has been acting as scientific coordinator for the University of Antwerp s Master in Safety Sciences since 2013.
3 Her main field of study is the interface between society and technology and the governance of risk. She has a particular experience in research on informed and inclusive decision making on environmental and technological risk, such as regarding the siting of contested facilities, (participatory) technology assessment and (responsible) innovation; and this both in terms of public and company policy. Most of Anne s research is policy oriented action-research, mainly qualitative in design and based on Science and Technology Studies (STS), with a strong focus on system and network analysis including both humans and non-humans as actors in the risk and safety discourse. Security Awareness: Facts or Fiction? Organizations spend a lot of money to create awareness of specific security risks among staff. Despite these efforts, it does not always lead to the desired results, namely a permanent and increased alertness. This is mainly due to the functioning of our brain and that is why the presentation will be given from a neuroscientific angle. Tom and Katelijn Nijsmans will clarify what alertness is and expose the gaps in this fallible system. They will translate these findings into some concrete tips to increase security awareness in your organization. Tom and Katelijn Nijsmans are the founders of The Tipping Point, a training and consulting firm that guides learning - and changing - processes based on the latest insights about Brain Based Learning. Their starting point is that the brain is naturally set to resist changes. Therefore, they have developed a Tipping methodology, based on a number of principles, which ensures that changes in behaviour are taking place. And often these are small changes that provide for the "tipping" to the desired changes. Tom Nijsmans is a criminologist with 15 years of experience in guiding security awareness programs and his sister Katelijn Nijsmans is a neuropsychologist working at the University of Antwerp. Hostile Observations Through Social Media & Smart Devices This dynamic presentation will demonstrate methods used by hostile agents to digitally profile targets, their friends, families and colleagues through openly available digital sources. The subject matter will cover everything from the types of data users share online, geo-locational data from devices, apps, to device connectivity, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. The presentation will also cover the types of social media content that can be of interest to the press and how it damages reputations. This will include possible risks to staff who may not have social media accounts and as a result, have their online identities hijacked by hostile observers. David Benford MSc is a leading expert on hostile observations through social media and emerging technologies. He is managing director and principal consultant of digital forensic & cybercrime specialists Blackstage Forensics. David Benford MSc is a Special Officer with the UK s National Crime Agency and is an Associate Lecturer of Cybercrime at the University of Derby, as well as group director of digital intelligence at the Centre for Strategic Cyber Security + Science (CSCSS).
