4 Foreword This volume contains the proceedings of S-BPM ONE 2010 the Subject- Orientation as Enabler for the Next generation of BPM Tools and Methods. It was the second event in the S-BPM ONE series, which was held in Karlsruhe on October 14, The success of the first international workshop in 2009 encouraged us to establish a series of conferences which will continue in 2011 in Ingolstadt and in 2012 in Vienna. The series aims to establish a platform for a multi- and cross-disciplinary interchange of innovative ideas, concepts, methods, tools and results in foundational and applied research as well as studies on the realization of such innovations in real life - all based on the new promising paradigm of subject-oriented business process management (BPM). The original call for papers attracted a total of 17 submissions, from which the Program Committee selected on the basis of double blind reviews 11 articles for presentation at the conference, giving a rejection rate of 35%. From these 11 articles we present 10 in these proceedings together with the invited keynote talk of A. Komus and three additional papers invited to stimulate discussion in this area. All these papers give evidence of the diversity and enthusiasm of this new area and its promising ideas and first results and achievements. The contributions in these proceedings are ordered in the same way as they were given at the conference, hence in a quasi-random order determined among other things by train schedules and other more probabilistic reasons. On the other hand this randomness reflects perfectly the productive atmosphere of the conference where researchers and practitioners from different areas combined their efforts and their ideas in discussions on how to improve contemporary BPM by paving the way for the new successful paradigm of subject-oriented BPM. The scientific program of the conference was opened by the invited keynote talk of Ayelt Komus discussing his rich experiences and several studies making evident that good BPM and organizational success go together. Moreover, he investigated the open issue of a holistic integration of various aspects and types of BPM activities, proposing an approach of a loose coupling combined with Wikimanagement success factors to overcome problems in this area. Erwin Aitenbichler, Stephan Borgert and Max Mühlhäuser showed in their contribution that S-BPM allows the distributed modeling and execution of processes, without losing the capability to verify the compatibility of processes by describing an engine to execute S-BPM process choreographies. In the following contribution Oliver Kopp, Lasse Engler, Tammo van Lessen, Frank Leymann and Jörg Nitzsche introduced the language BPEL gold which supports the interaction-based modeling approach and showed that it fulfills all requirements put on a choreography language and how it can be integrated in an enterprise service bus to make it choreography-aware.
5 VI Foreword The world and markets are highly dynamic. Hence, businesses today also have to adapt their business process models to new conditions. To be able to react instantly to such changes the contribution of Matthias Kurz and Albert Fleischmann suggested a new BPM concept (BPM 2.0) along with a corresponding software system increasing the flexibility of businesses by allowing employees to improve their business process. A case study critically examined the feasibility of both the concept as well as the software. The dynamic connection of business processes between organizations was investigated in the contribution of Nils Meyer, Thomas Feiner, Markus Radmayr, Dominik Blei and Albert Fleischmann. This paper explores the requirements to select flexible and dynamic partners across organizational borders and to react adequately to all arising changes. It evaluates existing approaches regarding cross-organizational process modeling and execution, proposing as a solution the subject-oriented jcpex! approach. Konrad Walser and Marc Schaffroth set out in their contribution a paradigmatic BPM framework of public administration developed on the basis of a pioneering organizational concept of public administration and discuss it with the example of the Swiss egovernment BPM ecosystem. The research presented in the submission of Alexander Sellner and Erwin Zinser aimed at establishing conceptual and functional links between S-BPM modeling environments and business rule repositories. The contribution presented a prototype for enacting business rules in S-BPM processes. Complex real-world processes usually require a comprehensive set of control flow constructs and strong semantics. The contribution of Jörg Rodenhagen and Florian Strecker investigated how S-BPM and multi-subjects can handle the process synchronization on different abstraction levels in such situations. For humans as key players in business processes natural language is the most natural tool with which to communicate. Stephan H. Sneed investigated in his contribution how to enable the generation of natural language documents (as behavior descriptions for human actors, service level agreements, requirement specifications for software systems or test specifications for system testing) out of S-BPM process models by following some modeling guidelines ensuring proper semantics of the S-BPM model as well as the exported natural language. The contribution of Peter Kesch returned to the dynamics of business processes describing a context-sensitive view on a sequence of process steps. He showed how the problems usually appearing in connection with the use of static data structures in such dynamic contexts can be overcome by a new concept of business objects developed in the Metasonic S-BPM Suite. Yuliya Stavenko and Alexander Gromoff presented in the last contribution a case study on the subject-oriented approach for automation and process modeling of a service company. They showed how the availability and quality of services and the time of implementing changes can be improved and, moreover, that this approach allows companies to maximize the return on IT investments.
6 Foreword VII Part II of these proceedings presents three invited contributions. The first contribution by Thomas J. Olbrich is entitled Why We Need to Re-think Current BPM Research Issues. To understand the character of this paper one has to understand its history. Usually when a long day of interesting and inspiring but nevertheless difficult talks and discussions is over and the conference dinner is approaching even the most intelligent audience becomes tired and more interested in good food than in further discussions of difficult problems and tasks to be solved in the future. To set a highlight at the end of the conference, to stimulate discussions at dinner and to wake everyone up, we invited Thomas Olbrich to give an especially provocative talk waking up the audience and the community. This he did in an excellent way pointing out what is wrong in contemporary BPM research. To reflect his talk in these proceedings we asked him to send us a related contribution to stimulate by this gunshot discussions in the community too. This he did, and even if a paper of a few pages simply cannot be as entertaining and funny as an oral presentation of 30 minutes, the submitted paper transports his message BPM research has for a number of reasons failed to make any meaningful contribution over the past several years. In his paper he discusses technical progress vs. deficient process orientation, analyzes where the real issues lie and addresses prospective future research issues. We see this contribution as a wakeup call to stimulate discussion at the dinner and of course, with a wink, also in the community. To reflect the discussions this talk provoked at dinner and to calm down things a bit, we add here two contributions. The first one is a contribution by Albert Fleischmann focusing on the point of view from industry. He does not agree on all details with Thomas Olbrich but thinks that the research on BPM mainly focuses on technical and technological aspects and does not give enough holistic consideration. A more fundamental critique to the message of Thomas Olbrich is given in the last contribution of Robert Singer and Erwin Zinser. Both give arguments why his provocative message should be rejected from a more scientific point of view. Moreover, they express and give reason for the huge need for further research, especially for a closer cooperation between academic institutions and industry. They state that we need an intense exchange of knowledge and experience between industry and research and, that moreover, research needs input and funding from industry, while industry needs sound new methodologies and a well-educated workforce to implement BPM to gain sustainable competitive advantage in solving the complex problems of our time and the future. We are convinced that the results of this conference will not only improve the understanding of the area of BPM and some of its future needs, but it will also prove to be useful in recent and future industrial applications. As editors of these proceedings we would like to thank all the members of the Program Committee, the keynote speaker Ayelt Komus and the invited speaker of the discussion, Thomas Olbrich, the Chairpersons of all sections, and all authors and speakers for their contributions. We thank Hagen Buchwald, Mathes
7 VIII Foreword Elstermann, Joachim Melcher and Oliver Schöll for their support of the local organization and also for their help in the reviewing. Moreover, we thank Stefan Raß for his support in formatting and building the proceedings, and we also want to thank Alexandra Kulfanova, Katrin Kindermann and Alexandra Gerrard for their support of the local organizers on the day of conference and for correcting the English of the contributions. For his special help as native speaker we thank Richard Wright. Last but not least, we thank Oliver Schöll for his management of the conference website and all his technical work managing the submission process and the generation of the final volume of the proceedings. The local organizers thank all the participants, and acknowledge the logistic and especially financial support from Metasonic AG with special gratitude. We also thank Alfred Hofmann and Leonie Kunz from Springer for their assistance and support in the production of these proceedings.
