4 My MSc study focused on 3D laser imaging in which I simulated the detection of a specific shape (a cube or a rectangular box). The method implemented a single point laser source and detected the location of the spot whether it is inside or outside the object using a triangulation method. The simulation was done using MATLAB where the operation was split into multiple functions. In the PhD study I focused on the photonic semiconductor devices derived from the diode laser. The very specific process was to achieve very high quality broadband devices which could provide high optical power with low noise. The full process to achieve such devices included device design based on a specific material system according to the required emitted wavelength, the design was done using professional design softwares to simulate the structure material wise and the optical waveguide especially in the case of buried waveguide devices. The second step is to implement the simulated structure into physical devices by both epitaxial growth and fabrication processes, the processes resulted in a device that has the same features of the simulated device. The devices were then characterized to compare their performance to the simulated ones.
