WORKSHOP AND GROUP SHOOT AIRBORNE HYPERSPECTRAL REMOTE SENSING April 21 to April 30, 2009 Airfield Wiener Neustadt, AUSTRIA INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE DIAMOND Airbone Sensing GmbH, Wiener Neustadt, AUSTRIA in cooperation with SPECIM Spectral Imaging Ldt., FINLAND are organizing a workshop/group shoot to present their innovative Airborne Hyperspectral Platform concept. Additionally interested customers have a chance to acquire hyperspectral and laserscanning data for different applications and locations. Your organization is warmly invited to participate in this event. The DIAMOND DA-42 Multi-Purpose Platform designed for the integration of different sensor payloads in the belly pod or in the nose pod.

The cooperating companies Diamond Airborne Sensing (DAS), a company fully owned by DIAMOND Aircraft Industries, is your perfect partner in the world of sensor applications. It has a unique worldwide status as the provider of all-in-one solutions delivered directly from the aircraft manufacturer. The innovative, twin-engine DA42 MPP (Multi-Purpose Platform) is a specially designed platform for carrying multifunctional aerial sensor equipment. It combines the advantage of extremely low operating costs with the specialized requirements of sensor operators. Diamond Aircraft Industries is a worldwide operating composite aircraft manufacturer with offices in major centers across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. There are three production facilities: one located in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, where head office, research and development operations are conducted, one in London, Ontario, Canada and a production facility in China. At all facilities innovative aircraft solutions, of the highest level and quality are produced for flight schools, private operators and for airborne sensing purposes. The company employs 1200 people, and has already produced over 4,500 aircraft. SPECIM Spectral Imaging, is a world-leading manufacturer of hyperspectral imaging instrumentation. SPECIM successfully provides solutions for the most demanding applications in laboratory, field and airborne remote sensing. A growing number of industrial and commercial partners and research organisations rely on the imaging spectrographs and hyperspectral imaging solutions. For airborne applications the AISA hyperspectral sensors are the market leader. SPECIM was founded in 1995 in Oulu, Finland, with the purpose of commercializing the unique imaging spectrograph technology invented by the SPECIM founders at the Finnish research institution VTT. Since then, SPECIM s growth has been remarkable, becoming a reference in the hyperspectral imaging market. SPECIM systems are present in more than 40 countries, and nearly 100% of the turnover comes from the international market. A worldwide, experienced network of distributors and partners contribute to maintain a close relationship with the customers and assists them before and after the acquisition of the system.

The innovative Airborne Hyperspectral Platform Concept Hyperspectral airborne remote sensing has earlier been considered as an expensive and time consuming way for acquiring information of the environment. The sensor solutions have been relatively massive and it was necessary to require an aircraft to be dedicated for this specific data type collection only. Within the cooperation of DAS and SPECIM a full turnkey solution, combining several remote sensing systems in one aircraft (platform), was developed thereby opening new fields of operation. The innovative Airborne Hyperspectral Platform allows for the integration of different sensors and navigation equipment in the belly pod of the MPP-aircraft: SPECIM AisaEAGLET Hyperspectral scanner operating in the visible to near-ir range of the spectrum (400 to 1000 nm; up to 410 spectral bands) SPECIM AisaHAWK Hyperspectral scanner operating in the Infrared rage of the spectrum (970 to 2500 nm; up to 254 spectral bands) RIEGL LMS Q-560 Laserscanner providing up to 8 laser points per sqm in full-waveform mode Inertial Navigation System (INS) and GPS to precisely monitor the flight path of the aircraft All the other necessary equipment for data storage, and flight and data acquisition control is stored in the rear compartment of the aircraft. The innovative platform concept integrating two hyperspectral scanners, laserscanner and navigation, data acquisition control and data storage equipment. Due to the pod and composite aircraft design along with the novel technique combining two hyperspectral sensors - covering a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum - with a laserscanner, the innovation gives an answer to the market s need to have a compact, ready-to-go solution available, providing 3D-hyperspectral data for different thematic applications. Besides the thematic aspect also the economic aspect should be considered - both the purchase and operational cost will be clearly lower than for traditional missions.

Background information on the workshop/group shoot The purpose of the event is twofold: Customers are welcomed to propose applications and test sites they are interested in. Based on their specifications the airborne MPPplatform will be available to acquire hyperspectral data and topographic data (laserscanning). The data acquired will be preprocessed (radiometric correction; georectification) using the CaliGeo software package provided by SPECIM, which is a plug in to the widely used ENVI image processing software. The group shoot (data acquisition) is scheduled to last for two weeks (April 21 to April 30) i.e. the MPPplatform with sensor equipment and personnel (pilot, operator) will be stand-by to guarantee that data acquisition can be performed under optimum weather conditions. During the group shoot - in principle the aircraft can cover all locations within the European Union. The airborne hyperspectral imaging technology will be presented during a three-day workshop. The workshop will focus on the technical background of airborne hyperspectral remote sensing, planning of data acquisition missions including sensor control and operation (SPECIM RScube software), and data pre-processing (radiometric correction and georectification using DEM data; with SPECIM CaliGeo software). Additionally based on the interest of the participating companies/customers application examples will be presented. The participants will have the chance to process data on their own using the SPECIM software packages and the ENVI image processing software.

Organizers Location Dates Application Demonstrated instrumentation Schedule Financial issues Diamond Airborne Sensing (Dr. Diethard Leber) SPECIM (Dr. Katja Alanko-Huotari) Wiener Neustadt in Austria. The flights can take place within the European Union and especially in nearby locations, like the Austrian Alps. April 21 th to 30 th, 2009 period designated for the acquisition of data of test sites specified by customers (Multi-Purpose Platform stand-by). April 28 th to 30 th, 2009 workshop. Different applications considering the special interest of participants/customers. Integrated solution: DIAMOND DA42-MPP aircraft by Diamond Airborne Sensing AisaEAGLET (VNIR) and AisaHAWK (SWIR) by SPECIM RIEGL LMS Q-560 laser scanner Group shoot/data acquisition: 4 or 5 days dedicated to data acquisition 2 or 3 days for data processing Workshop: Three days are dedicated to a workshop on hyperspectral imaging and data processing. For the general outline of the program see above. The detailed program of the workshop will be provided to interested participants at a later stage. Demonstration and workshop are free of charge. Participants shall be responsible for their accommodation, transportation and other expenses. Participants are invited to present their ideas on possible data collection sites. In general, some samples of the data collected during the group shoot will be distributed to all participants. This data is free of charge. Participants are also invited to request for data collection according to their application interest. This data collection will be carried out during the group shoot, and the data will be delivered only to SPECIM, DAS, and to the participant in question, unless otherwise agreed. The organizers of the flight demo will charge for request-based data collection. Details have to be negotiated. The deadline for data collection requests is April 15, 2009.
