4 A Welcome Message from the President of ACAP Dr. Kuo-Chih (KC) Wang ( 王國治 ) Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 37 th annual Science, Engineering and Technology Seminar (SETS, 科學工程技術研討會 ). The Association of Chinese American Professionals (ACAP, 美南國建協進會 ) has hosted SETS every year since the organization s inception in We are proud to continue our tradition today with another set of exciting programs that we are sure you will enjoy. We can also proudly say this is still the largest Science & Technology conference of Chinese community in southern region of USA. This year SETS includes biomedical science, energy, environmental protection, Nano and composite technology, off-shore technology, petroleum and chemical processing, business, financial management and health sessions. The biomedical science symposium is sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology ( 科技部 ) of the Republic of China. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Weng-Foung Huang ( 黃文鴻教授 ) will discuss Biomedical Industry and Taiwan's National Health Insurance, which you will find be very informative. We have two new collaborating organizations: Texas Taiwanese Biotechnology Association (TTBA, 德州台灣生物科技協會 ) and Federation of Chinese Trader s Alumni of Greater Houston (FCTAGH, 休士頓華商經貿聯誼會 ). We are excited about working with these two organizations to further diversify SETS contents. This is the 4 th year of the student research poster contest, a very worthy event for the students to present their works to a panel of judges. We also added a twist to the contest in addition to poster board we also reserved a conference room for the finalists to give an oral presentation. I also like to congratulate two outstanding gentlemen; Dr. Thompson Lin ( 林誌祥 ), recipient of distinguish achievement award and Mr. Edward Chen ( 陳天生 ), recipient of outstand service award. It s been a busy and exciting year for ACAP so far. In March, the young professionals and students networking luncheon was a huge success. The keynote speeches received nothing but praises. In May, the 15 th year Diversity Summit ( 多元化高峰會議 ) drew more than 300 participants to discuss Preparing the Next Generation of Leaders. ACAP has been approved as a SHRM (Society of Human Resource Management) Preferred Provider for the two-year term between 4/1/2015 4/1/2017. Which means people can obtain SHRM continuing education credits by attending the diversity summit. It has been an honor for me serving as the 2015 president of ACAP. On behalf of the ACAP, I would like to thank our volunteers, sponsors and partners for their dedication and support. We are sincerely grateful to all of you for your continual support to ACAP and our events. We are delighted you are here and hope you will find today s conference informative and enriching. 21 DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Dr. Thompson Lin ( 林誌祥 ) President, Applied Optoelectronics Inc Dr. Thompson Lin ( 林誌祥 ) is the founder, President, CEO & Chairman of Applied Optoelectronics, Inc., a leading manufacturer of fiber-optic networking products, primarily for three networking end markets: cable television, fiber-to-the-home and internet data center. Dr. Lin received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia in He served as a Research Associate Professor with the College of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Houston from 1994 to During his tenure with the University of Houston, Dr. Lin pioneered the development of a new class of infrared semiconductor lasers, called Quantum Cascade lasers, that not only demonstrated the ability to emit light in the mid-infrared spectrum, but also set many records for infrared laser performance. His work was supported by both the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization, now the Missile Defense Agency as well as the Air Force Research Lab and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. The success of Dr. Lin s research led to the founding of Applied Optoelectronics, Inc., (AOI) in February of The mission of AOI is to develop breakthrough technology, built on the foundation of Dr. Lin s research, to bring life-changing products that affect the lives of people worldwide. AOI currently has operations in U.S., Taiwan and China, each carrying manufacturing, research and development, sales and administrative offices to service our customers globally. AOI s corporate headquarter is located in Sugar Land, Texas, with 24,000 square feet of manufacturing space, which includes one of the most preeminent, state of the art, commercial III-V laser fabs in the world. AOI s wholly owned subsidiary, Global Technology, Inc., is located in Ningbo, China, where its 450,000 square feet facility provide the capacity for the manufacturing of video equipment products. In December of 2014, AOI completed a move to a new facility in Linkou, Taiwan, comprising of 168,000 square feet of office and manufacturing space. With its strategically located and vertically integrated operations, AOI is currently the #1 supplier worldwide of CATV lasers and subsystems, and #3 supplier for datacenter transceivers. AOI s success and exponential growth over the past 18 years can be attributed to Dr. Lin s leadership and ability to accurately anticipate market trends. From 2000 to 2012, Dr. Lin successfully raised over $105 million of private capital for the company. In September of 2013, Dr. Lin and his management team took AOI public on NASADAQ raising $42 million in its initial public offering. Within 6 months from the IPO, AOI had a secondary offering raising $84 million in capital. As of today, under Dr. Thompson Lin s leadership, Applied Optoelectronics Inc., employs more than 2,000 employees worldwide. 18

22 OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD Mr. Edward Chen ( 陳天生 ) President, Chinese American Society of Environmental Protection and Safety, Houston, Texas, U.S.A. Edward Chen ( 陳天生 ) was Deputy Director of the Houston s Department of Solid Waste Management Department; Mr. Chen leads the South Operations, as well as the totality of Houston environmental program & municipal recycling. These responsibilities include management and oversight of an operation consisting of more than 230 staff and an annual budget of $25 million. Those operations consist of automated garbage collection, heavy trash/ tree waste collection, and bio-bag yard waste, curbside/drop-off recycling and household hazardous waste (HHW), as well as leadership of all Houston s recycling and environmental resources program. Mr. Chen has more than 38 years experience in environmental pollution control with emphasis on municipal solid waste collections, recycling, waste minimization/prevention, and waste to energy, landfill disposal, household hazardous waste, end user markets, recycled products procurement, waste audit, material recovery facility (M.R.F.), biomass, and CO2 reduction. The award-winning public-private recycling partnership Mr. Chen developed many recycling programs has saved Houston millions of dollars, which were used to implement comprehensive recycling program. He also organized the Houston Environmental Summit. Mr. Chen has represented the City of Houston at numerous State and Federal conferences. In 2002, he was appointed by the Mayor of Houston to be Environmental Protection Coordinator and Advisor to the Shanghai (China) Municipal Government. In 2004, he received President s Award from the Recycling Alliance of Texas for outstanding leadership in solid waste and recycling. In 1993, he received the U.S. Conference of Mayor s Municipal Solid Waste Management Association National Fellowship Award, given in recognition of outstanding contributions in the field of solid waste. In 1998, he received the Chairman s Award for his outstanding leadership in Houston s recycling efforts from the Houston Corporate Recycling Council. In 1999 and 2002, as mayoral appointee, he was a delegate of the Mayor s Business Development Mission to Asia to promote business development in the area of environmental protection. He was a keynote speaker at Contamination Clean Up 07, an industry summit held in Australia in June of 2007, and a keynote at International Conference on Waste Management and Technology hosted by Tsinghua University, China from 2009 through 2014 as well as a member of waste management steering committee of Tsinghua University. The modern medicine has been challenged by a series of emerging and reemerging infections in the past three decades. These infections include legionnaires' disease, Lyme disease, toxic shock syndrome, AIDS and associated opportunistic infections, SARS, avian influenza, and several viral hemorrhagic fever such as Ebola, Marburg, Lassa, etc. These diseases have occurred following a false sense of victory over infectious diseases on a global scale due to effective vaccinations and antibiotic agents against certain microorganisms. However, except for smallpox, infectious diseases are by no means vanquished; and the surge of many emerging and reemerging infections are good examples. These new epidemics are caused by alterations of interplay between microorganisms and human hosts, and are also affected by natural environmental factors, such as climatic or ecological changes. The evolutionary or genetic changes in existing organisms or newly recognized organisms are basically modalities of microbial adaptation to the environmental pressures, which are frequently created by human behavioral, social, economic, and cultural activities. Some of these activities include population overgrowth, mass migration, geopolitical conditions, agriculture and forestry mismanagement, rapid and increasing international transportation, misuse of antibiotic agents, and changing patterns of human exposure to animals. Because of the unique circumstances of the modern world, these new infectious diseases are emerging at much faster rates than before, and old ones are returning with bolstering strength. These infections have posed severe threats to global public health and have raised serious questions regarding the capability of modern medicine to face their challenges. The problem is further amplified by a generally lenient, and sometimes ignorant attitude toward infectious diseases by policymakers, healthcare professionals, and general public. Such attitude has been partially responsible for serious deficiency in diagnostic capabilities, research facilities, surveillance systems, and control and prevention programs. Adult stem cells (SCs) reside in specialized anatomical locations, known as the niches, where they are used sparingly, often remaining quiescent for a long time. The activity of SCs is under tight regulation. Aberrant SC activity results in severe consequences. For example, in the skin, tumors including squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma are derived from SC hyperproliferation. In contrast, androgenetic alopecia, or male pattern baldness, is due to a problem in HFSC activation. Delineating the regulation of SC activity becomes critical for studying tissue biology under physiological (development and homeostasis) and pathological (injury, degeneration, and cancer) conditions. The SC niche plays a dominant role in regulating SC activity. Understanding the niche composition and the exact functional signals expressed by the niche components is an important aspect of SC biology. The murine HF is an ideal system to study the interactions between SCs and their niche. Hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs) are located in a permanent protrusion of the HF, known as the bulge. HFs undergo periodic phases of growth (anagen), destruction (catagen), and rest (telogen) throughout the life of the animal, known as the hair cycle. The HFSCs are activated only transiently in the initial phase of the anagen, and remain quiescent throughout the other hair cycle stages. We are among the pioneers to identify stem cell progeny as important regulators of their stem cell parents. Blood is a rich source of different types of biomolecules, and is the most common sample used in disease diagnosis and biomarker discovery. However, blood-based biomarker discovery suffered with enormous signal-to-noise ratio between samples from normal and diseased individuals. The noise can in part be attributed to the combination of 1) the large variation among healthy individuals, 2) different pathobiologic stages of the disease, and 3) the inadvertent grouping of different diseases with similar clinical presentation, but much of the noise arises are related to technical issues. Recent discovery of circulating cell free nucleic acids, including circulating tumor DNA (ctdna) and cell free RNA (cfrna), opens up an opportunity to use circulating nucleic acids to assist the detection of various physiopathological conditions. Organic wastes produced from kitchen or market in daily life which may be put to beneficial use. Composting is the biological degradation of organic materials under controlled aerobic conditions. The process is used to stabilize waste solids prior to their use as a soil amendment or mulch in landscaping, horticulture, and agriculture. Stabilization of compost prior to 27

31 their use serves to destroy pathogens (disease causing organisms), minimize odors, and reduce vector attraction potential. There are three general methods of composting organic wastes: windrow, aerated static pile, and invessel. Each method uses the same scientific principals but varies in procedures and equipment needs. This report addresses in-vessel composting occurs within a contained vessel, enabling the operator to maintain closer control over the process in comparison with other composting methods. In-vessel technology is more environmental friendly suitable than other composting technologies in suburban and urban settings because the system allows for containment and treatment of air to remove odors before release. The requirement for a relatively small amount of land also increases its applicability in these settings over other types of composting. However, a market for use of the resulting product will generally be more readily available in suburban and rural areas rather than urban settings. Speaker: Ying-Jen Chou, Ph.D., President & CEO, Greenland Environmental Sustainable, Taiwan, ROC Topic: The Resources Technology of Heavy Metal Sludge ( 重金屬污泥資源化技術 ) Abstract. 重金屬污泥主要來自含重金屬廢水或廢液的處理, 一般含重金屬廢水多以添加 NaOH 方式, 調整廢水 ph 值至 10 或以上, 廢水中重金屬在高 ph 值條件下, 形成金屬氫氧化物沉澱, 再經過絮凝 過濾 脫水等程序, 即成為重金屬污泥 針對重金屬污泥, 目前常見的資源回收或再利用技術多有二次廢棄物 廢氣 廢水 高耗能 耗水或掩埋場土地資源消耗等問題, 因此在成本考量下, 僅對污泥中具有特定高價質且高濃度之金屬進行分項回收, 然超過一半以上重金屬污泥, 在傳統回收技術中, 缺乏回收經濟效益, 僅能以固化掩埋或暫時置放工廠中 而濕式低溫之鐵氧體法, 則因反應溫度低, 允收污泥範圍廣, 可以免除傳統再利用方式之缺點問題, 成為可行之重金屬污泥再利用方式 一般濕式低溫之鐵氧體法可先利用含高濃度鐵離子之鋼鐵廢酸洗液, 將污泥溶解, 使重金屬成為離子態, 而廢酸洗液中高量鐵離子同時提供鐵氧體反應所需之鐵離子來源, 再經由添加鹼液, 調整 ph 至 9~11, 同時配合加溫至 70~80 與曝氣, 反應時間約 1~2 小時, 可以形成鐵氧體, 同時有害之重金屬離子完全被包覆於鐵氧體晶格內, 不再析出, 成為具有再利用價值之商品 本公司開發之濕式低溫之鐵氧體製程, 則於製程中先以能量裂解酸溶液中金屬離子與水的氫鍵, 並於鐵氧體生成反應中, 加入晶格整序排列, 進一步提升傳統一般濕式低溫之鐵氧體法之效率與鐵氧體產品品質 經本公司製程之產生之鐵氧體, 最高鐵含量可達約 70%, 同時 TCPL 金屬測值, 遠低於中華民國環保法規標準, 可應用於防銹塗料 防電磁波塗料 磁性材質等方面, 深具大力推廣價值 28

Average temperatures in the earth s atmosphere and oceans are steadily rising as a result of rising greenhouse gas concentrations. Data over the last century shows a clear and consistent trend towards warmer temperatures. The increase in atmospheric greenhouse gasses has been well documented. Sufficient data exists to document a consistent global increase in C02 throughout the atmosphere. Rise in C02 concentrations are a direct result of human related industrial activities, predominately within the last century. The climate changes in variation of weather pattern may have contributed to increasing both the frequency and magnitude of hurricanes, flooding events, sea level rising, draught and other natural disasters. In the Houston-Galveston area disaster events do frequently occur and do not follow the political boundaries. In our area, watershed scale changes such as urbanization, logging, and/or agriculture change the natural rainfall-runoff regime in such a way that the damages caused by large floods become more severe. Communities and each family need to be aware of the different types of disasters prevalent in their areas and of the specific cautions to take. It requires significant amount of resources and time to conduct mitigation planning and mitigation implementation in the communities. While master planning and mitigation implementation on the way in our area, each family or facility needs to have its own disaster response plan and disaster mitigation measures to protect residence and business. Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are a promising class of smart polymeric materials with the capability of microscopically storing mechanical energy, and reversibly recovering in the form of either mechanical strain (free recovery), or mechanical stress (constrained recovery), upon exposure to certain stimuli such as heat. A wide variety of applications have been conceived these years, including sensors and actuators, biomedical devices and self-healing. In those applications, stress recovery and stress memory behaviors often play more important roles; for example, in the biomimetic close-then-heal (CTH) self-healing scheme, the constraint by the surrounding materials and structure boundaries must be overcome before the opening can be closed. Obviously, even if the strain recovery ratio is 100%, the opening or crack cannot be closed if the recovery stress is not sufficient to overcome these constraints. However, the complicated stress recovery behavior in nature does not always exhibit a single pattern, and sometimes stress plateau, stress overshoot and stress undershoot can be observed. In this study, we proposed a phenomenological model, in which the recovery stress is considered as a sum of the residual programming stress, memorized stress, thermal stress, and relaxed stress, in order to reveal the complicated stress memorization and recovery behavior. In addition, we demonstrated this model by a stress recovery experiment in which a thermally induced thermosetting shape memory polymer was tested and analyzed per thermomechanical cycle. Results indicate the recovery stress overshoot can be successfully explained by our model and it may provide some helpful insights for the design of smart SMPs and SMP composites. In this topic, a healing-on-demand composite from polymer artificial muscle was investigated. The polymer artificial muscle was made of commercial fishing line. During the fabrication process, the artificial muscle with prestrain 60% was placed in one-dimension (1-D) on a mold; healing agent (10% by volume) and EPON epoxy were mixed with resin curing agent for 10 minutes and poured into the prepared mold. After completely cured, the composite was cut into sample size upon ASTM D Crack was initiated by a single edge notched bending (SENB) test. A local heat was provided to stimulate contraction of artificial muscle and damage healing behavior of composite sample. It found that with 60% prestrain of reinforced polymer artificial muscle (8% volume fraction), over 60% damage was healed at free boundary condition and 54% at fixed boundary condition after repeated damage-healing events. 31

35 Speaker: Ms. Qianxi Yang ( 楊茜茜 ), Research Assistant, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Louisiana State University Topic: Testing and Characterization of Shape Memory Polyurethane Fiber ( 測試形狀記憶的聚氨酯纖維及表徵 ) Abstract. Recent years, scientists have imparted the shape memory properties to shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) fibers to enhance their thermomechanical properties. Due to their similarities in the micro-structures, it is envisioned that SMPU fiber may have similar properties with the spider dragline silk, which is one of the most outstanding structure material in nature. This study seeks to better understand the working mechanism of SMPU fiber in multi-scales and multi-aspects: The macro-scale mechanical, dynamical and shape memory properties of SMPU fiber are tested and compared to those of spider dragline silk. Although the polymeric fiber has a lower strength compared to spider dragline silks ( GPa versus 1.1GPa), it possesses much higher toughness ( MJ/m 3 versus 160MJ/m 3 ), due to its excellent extensibility. The dynamic mechanical tests reveal that SMPU fiber has a high damping capacity ( ) which is comparable to or even higher than that of spider silks ( ). The shape memory property is characterized by the fully constrained recovery stress. Compared to SMPU fiber (4~7MPa), spider dragline silk can generate remarkably higher super-contraction stresses, ranging from 10MPa to 140MPa. In addition, different programming procedures and recovery conditions result in different behaviors. The mesoscale morphology of SMPU fibers were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to understand the physics behind the different macro-scale behaviors. It is found that SMPU experiences different phase transitions and phase separations under different programming and stress recovery conditions. It is concluded that the two sequential phase separations taking place at 100 o C and 150 o C are primarily responsible for the differences in the macro-scale behaviors. While self-crack-healing has been a topic of intensive research for years and the literature has grown exponentially, one challenge is how to heal wide-opened internal cracks in load-bearing engineering structures, particularly under service conditions (such as under tensile stress and/or with fixed boundary conditions). For almost all intrinsic or extrinsic self-healing schemes, they focus on healing micro cracks such as fatigue cracks, or when they face wide-opened cracks, the fractured specimen segments are brought in-contact manually. Obviously, this simple operation represents the greatest challenge in real world load-bearing structures. In this talk, I will present the biomimetic close-then-heal (CTH) self-healing scheme developed by my research group. I will show that we are able to repeatedly heal wide-opened cracks efficiently, timely, at molecular length-scale, and with service conditions. 32

Taiwan launched a single-payer National Health Insurance program on March 1, As of 2014, 99.9% of Taiwan s population was enrolled. The database of this program contains registration files and original claim data for reimbursement. Large computerized databases derived from this system by the National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA), Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) and maintained by the National Health Research Institutes (NHRI) are provided to scientists in Taiwan for research purposes. Data in the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) that could be used to identify patients or care providers, including medical institutions and physicians, is scrambled before being sent to the NHRI for database construction and is further scrambled before being released to each 34

Based on the registration files and original claims data in NHIRD, specific data subsets are constructed for research purposes including Registration Dataset, Systematic Sampling of 0.2% ambulatory care expenditures by visit (CD) and 5% of the inpatient expenditures by admission (DD), Longitudinal Health Insurance Database(LHID) of 2000, 2005,and 2010, and Specific subject datasets such as Cancer dataset (CN), Case-payment dataset (NCP) Diabetes dataset (DB) Psychiatric Inpatient Medical Claim Dataset (PIMC), etc. The NHIRD has been a very beneficial research resource not only in its national representative samples, but also in the real world experiences to explore the potential problems of drug safety. This presentation starts with using NHIRD for Cross-sectional studies in drug utilization patterns such as patterns of sleep-related drugs, overdose, duplicate medications, drug interactions, etc... Amongst other deep water engineering branches such as pipelines, risers and flow assurance, Subsea Structures and Foundations (SSF) has become one of the core disciplines for almost any subsea energy development undertakings whereas a plethora of submerged structures different in functionality and capacity situated at water depths ranging from under a hundred feet to well over 10,000 feet are required for the production and export of hydrocarbon products. Most commonly subsea structures refer to subsea establishments such as PLET (Pipeline End Termination), PLEM (Pipeline End Manifold), ILS (In-Line Sled), subsea manifolds, rigid M-shape production and well jumpers or horizontal jumpers, mudmats and suction piles as geotechnical foundations and etc. The design of subsea structures primarily look for key features such as structural strength requirements, light-weight structural build, fabrication and installation friendliness, and most importantly the inherently safer design philosophy. As more and more subsea development projects encompass vast deep water terrain with large quantity of subsea structures, major operators are also becoming aware of the need for the design standardization to minimize engineering and fabrication cost. Speaker: Warren Kuo, Principal Subsea Engineer, McDermott Engineering Topic: Suction Pile Installation Application Utilizing Predicted and Real-time Monitored Suction Pressures Abstract. Suction piles have been widely used for subsea foundation and mooring line anchorage, since they are reliable and cost effective for subsea installation. Traditionally, suction piles were designed to sustain installation pressure against upper and lower limits derived from soil failure and tubular buckling. This traditional approach does not take into account the variation between the predicted required suction pressure and the real installation suction pressure and assumes the real suction pressure time history will fall into the zone between the predicted upper bound and lower bound pressure curves. For the traditional tubular buckling check, the thin plate effect and the pile geometric imperfection are not well considered and experimented; therefore, the buckling capacity of the piles with large D/t ratios may be overestimated in certain circumstances. Recent studies on piles with large diameters have suggested that those piles often fail in plate buckling modes instead of tubular buckling mode during pile installation. In this paper, we presents the in-situ pump-in pressure history extracted from the real-time monitoring data during suction pile installation. The actual required suction pressure built overtime is found to be greater than the upper bound pressure curve and is close to the lower bound pressure curve of soil plug heave failure, even when the pile self-penetration depth falls into the predicted range. This observation suggests that the required pump-in pressure curve for a suction pile installation is not well predicted using traditional approach. 36

40 Speaker: George Lo, Senior Engineer, ABS Topic: An Overview of Design Considerations for Offshore Wind Turbine Support Structures Abstract. Wind power, a type of renewable energy, continuously evolves in twenty first century upstanding from the dry dessert to the ocean on earth. Offshore wind energy, a stable and independent energy source has been beneficially utilized by the costal countries. This alternative source keeps balancing the unpredictable fossil fuel price in versatile energy sector. As the offshore wind farm development moves into relative deep water and to offshore sites with unfavorable soil conditions, the technical challenges in the design of such complex fully coupled aero-hydro-servoelastic offshore wind turbine (OWT) support structures are enormously increased. It is of importance to perceive the characteristic of OWT featured by nonlinearity due to wind-blade interactions and actions of the turbine control system, and the related design conditions so that subsequently streamline the design of OWT support structures. This presentation will provide an outlook of the development of the offshore wind industry, US Offshore wind energy resources and types of OWT support structures and an overview of design consideration for OWT support structures. Speaker: Ching-Hsiang Chen, Project Engineer, Energo Engineering Topic: Insights into the Seismic Response of Offshore Structures based on Centrifuge Modeling Abstract. A series of centrifuge-shake table tests were performed at the University of California at Davis to investigate the seismic response of offshore structures, including two single piles and a 4- pile template structure. Small-amplitude step-wave pluck tests were performed to estimate the natural period and damping of the structures. A controlled harmonic ground motion excitation was then applied to investigate the dynamic response of the structures in the frequency-sweep test. Finally, both small (elastic-level) and large (ductility-level) earthquake motions were applied. Accelerations were measured in the soils and on the structures. In addition, strain gauges were mounted on the piles to determine bending moments. Settlement of the template structure and pore pressures in the soils were also measured. The experimental results were analyzed by Energo Engineering with a series of numerical models developed using the Capacity Analysis Program (CAP). More-than-expected ground motion attenuation was observed in the frequency-sweep test and large earthquake. In the small earthquake, predictions of structural accelerations and pile bending moments were considerably improved when the measured depth-varying ground motions were explicitly used as seismic inputs. Finally, the pile foundation of the template structure was observed to fail in the frequency-sweep test when resonance caused sufficient dynamic amplification in the structural system. The failure was predicted with CAP prior to the centrifuge test, where the foundation settlement was also accurately predicted. 37

As the growth of the paraxylene market (PX) continues to be driven by increasing global demand, PX prices and margins remain strong and are expected to remain healthy over the next several years. Toluene methylation is an effective and economical solution to maximize PX yields by adding the methyl group from low-cost methanol to the aromatic ring. GTC Technology has developed GT-TolAlk as a new way to derive PX while eliminating benzene production. The feedstock, consisting of methanol and toluene, is processed in the toluene methylation reaction section where the toluene is alkylated into xylenes. The reactor effluent is processed in the fractionation section to produce the mixed xylene product. Unconverted toluene is separated and recycled back to the reaction section. C9+ aromatics fraction is also produced and separated, and is available as a feedstock to the transalkylation unit, as the C9+ cut is rich in tri-methyl benzene. Benzene is the typical by-product due to insufficient methyl groups compared to phenyl groups. By adding methyl groups to the aromatic ring, GT-TolAlk replenishes the methyl group shortage to yield more xylene over benzene. More than 60 million Americans experience acid reflux at least once a month. Acid reflux disease, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), can produce a variety of symptoms. Heartburn, regurgitation, and dyspepsia are a few of the most common acid reflux symptoms. Most of the time, acid reflux symptoms cause no complications. In a few case, continued esophageal damage can lead to scarring, which may cause the esophagus to narrow. The narrowing creates strictures and makes it difficult to swallow. You may have dysphagia, a sensation that food is stuck in your esophagus. In some cases, cells in the lining of the esophagus develop an abnormal shape and color in response to the constant acid irritation. This is Barrett s esophagus, which can develop cancer. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease in developed countries worldwide. NAFLD has a spectrum of disease from simple steatosis to steatohepatitis, which can further progress to advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis. Patients with NAFLD are at risk for developing cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and liver related diseases. The pathophysiologic mechanisms for NAFLD are likely multifactorial, including lifestyle (diet and exercise), comorbidities (especially diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia), and genetics. NAFLD is highly associated with metabolic syndrome. Simple steatosis is usually associated with a good long term prognosis. However, as mentioned previously, steatohepatitis can progress to advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis and even liver cancer. It is therefore important to diagnose steatohepatitis early so interventions can be provided. There is currently no treatment available for NAFLD. Patients with NAFLD are recommended achieving sustained weight loss through restriction of daily calorie intake and regular exercise. 39

Open your door to more business when opportunity knocks! Historically, Minorityor Woman-owned Business has been under-utilized in Texas procurement process. In recent years, Texas started to award contracts to companies certified as Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUBs). In fiscal 2014, Texas awarded more than $2 billion in contracts to companies with HUB certification, which accounts for 12% of total dollars awarded in contracts. However, among eightyeight thousands vendors awarded with contracts, less than 5% is HUBs (the goal is 35%), which accounts for 4,386 vendors. Among HUBs awarded with contracts, only 6.6% is Asian Americans (that includes people from Taiwan, Vietnam, China, Korea, Japan, and 13 other countries). That is, only 289 HUBs, which were awarded contracts, owned by Asian Americans. All living creatures require foods to live. Human beings are, for the most part, on top of the food chain. Eating leads to ingestion of whatever contents in the foods consumed. Certain substances are toxic to human beings, when a critical quantity is reached. These include chemical, mechanical, physical, and biological hazards. With the r of human society, more foods are processed, which leads to more additives to the foods, either intentionally or unintentionally. As a result, illnesses caused by foods have become more frequent and sometimes more prevalent, also because the improvement in transportation makes the same foods more accessible to more people. Some illnesses occur quickly and are more recognizable. Some are insidious and may not become apparent after many years. Since the reports of food poisoning by the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in bran oil in 1968 (Japan) and 1979 (Taiwan), there have been more reported scandals involving various hazardous substances in foods. The most recent example is the Listeria monocytogenes outbreak caused by contamination of the Blue Bell IceCream production lines in Although the increase in frequency may be partly due to the improvement in media communications, there appears to be a common theme: the offenders have been aware of the problems for some time but failed to correct the issues, regardless at the level of the raw materials, the food processing, the transportation, or the retail distribution. The government is in charge of the safety of the foods and the dining environment. There are laws regulating the food standards and there are inspections to enforce the laws. However, incidences of food poisoning continue to occur, because the inspections cannot be executed at all locations all the time, and the human nature is such that there will always be the very few that do not follow the laws. The consumers have become more anxious in not knowing when and where they are going to be poisoned by the foods. To improve food safety, the participants of the Annual Chinese Community Health Fair and other organizations, as consumers, would like to advocate a conscience movement on food safety. We would like to ask quality restaurants and food retailers to volunteer and set examples for food safety. Meeting the criteria in the agreement (attached), the merchants will receive a signage for the effort that can be displayed in the stores. Announcements will be made in the news media so the consumers can be comfortable with the foods in these stores. Periodic sampling of the products is meant to improve the quality but not published. After all, only by promoting our conscience shall we be able to assure that we do not jeopardize our own health and eliminate the human race. About the Speaker. 53 美南國建協進會 The Association of Chinese American Professionals ACAP is an association of Chinese American professionals with a wide variety of expertise including engineering, science, health care, business, humanity, and arts and culture. Founded in 1978, and currently with a total membership of approximately 300, the ACAP recruits its members from, but not limited to, the states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas and Oklahoma. In 2001, the ACAP, in collaboration with JPMorgan Chase, Shell Oil Company and Marathon Oil Company, organized the inaugural Diversity Summit annual conference. This annual conference has since gained wider support and attendance from other major corporations and organizations in the greater Houston area with an attendance over 300 people. As a non-profit organization, the ACAP strives to foster the professional development and fellowship among its members, to facilitate the development of leadership skills of Chinese Americans professionals, and to address various issues that Chinese American professionals faced in the workplace. In order to encourage professional advancement of the members, the ACAP regularly hosts technical seminars and workshops with various professional disciplines throughout the year. The flagship activity is the Science, Engineering and Technology Seminars (SETS) held in Houston in the spring/ summer of each year. SETS usually draw 200 to 300 participants. These seminars, workshops and conferences are multidisciplinary, and often involve guest speakers from other states and foreign countries. 50
