1 Photo by J. Bergen President s Message Hello from the Cayman Islands, the weather here is perfect (I ll try to bring some back for us to share)! As far as business and what s up with the club, I d like to see more people come out for meeting nights. What I propose is that we use them as a finishing night or for work on personal projects. When there is business to discuss we can talk about it while we carve. I m sure we ve all had enough of boring meetings, let's make ours fun! Also, we re in need of a project person or group to plan workshops and classes. Please give this opportunity some thought. Forward your nominations or just volunteer, it would be most appreciated. Now I must get back to the business at hand the sun the beach and the beer. Thank you Peter Dielschneider President s Message & Index P1 Club Happenings P6 RWWC Meeting Schedule P2 Our Carving is Missing! P9 Carving Opportunities & Events P3 Editor s Note P10-1 -

I have participated in this a couple of times as well as Wilbur Feader and Bill Dearborn and we all enjoyed the event. My wife went with me and took the quilting class. It is fairly reasonably priced and a fun time..when we went, we stopped in Jamestown, N.D. for the evening and then continued to Wahpeton the next day. 9 Our Carving is Missing! If you enjoy walks in our beautiful Wascana Park, you may have noticed that our Totem Pole had vanished for a time this winter. For several weeks my wife and I would stop at the vacant space on our laps around the lake and wonder it the familiar carving would ever return. Then in late December, our carving was back with a fresh new look! J. Bergen, RWWC Newsletter Editor The following article and photo at right have been reprinted with the permission of Wascana Centre. Lakeshore Park Totem Pole The Totem Pole, located in Lakeshore Park within Wascana Centre, was a gift to Saskatchewan from the British Columbia government in It commemorates the centenary of the union, July 20, 1871, of the province of British Columbia with the Dominion Canada. The Saskatchewan totem pole is one of 12 presented to Canadian Centres. British Columbia's gift of a Totem Pole to Saskatchewan was hewn from Western Red Cedar by Mr. Lloyd Wadhams of the Nimpkish Indian Band. It is 16 feet high, three and a half feet in diameter, and weighs approximately 3,500 pounds. In 2016 the Totem Pole was removed and restored after years of aging and damage. Master Carver Lloyd Wadhams Jr., son of the original carver performed the extensive work. Along with restoring the entire Totem Pole, new wings and antennae were also built and installed. The Totem Pole is of the Kwakiutl Nation design. The predominant feature of the pole is the large Thunderbird which in Indian mythology is the noble and omnipotent ruler of the skies and master of the elements. It is the Great Eagle, respected throughout the area by all the coastal tribes. For the Kwakiutl it is particularly a symbol of family solidarity, the supernatural power that helped man build his first house. The human form on its breast signifies supernatural and human attributes
10 Current RWWC Executive Peter Dielschneider Past President Secretary-Treasurer Program / Group Newsletter Website Library Monthly Projects President Linda Anderson Herb Klassen Vacant (seeking candidates, sword fights not required) Jack Bergen Bill Dearborn Dale Wenman Andre Beaudoin (who wishes not to be on the executive) (and sure does a lot of work for us on all those blanks!) Editor s Note Now that my first issue as editor is behind me, I hope to start developing some fresh carving related content. The first idea for features came from Linda Anderson our out-going/outgoing president who suggested that we start interviewing our own club members. Considering our great wealth of skilled and knowledgeable carvers, I thought this was a great idea. So starting in April I plan to feature our first Meet a Carver article (Linda s title suggestion). The second idea was to feature carving art in our community and southern Saskatchewan. The Lakeshore Park Totem Pole being the first feature along these lines. Wondering about content in past issues I did a quick Google search which returned a decade old, Issue 80 of Carver s Corner lurking somewhere on the web. Because I m kinda cheap (site wanted money to download) I only got a couple of low resolution snips but still wanted to share these with you. Please enjoy our current March, 2017 Issue 168 of Carver`s Corner and crank-up the hot tub time machine we re going back to Jack Bergen
11 I thought Herb was so dynamic and hardworking by taking on his dual executive roles. However, given the above I can now see that he s been slacking-off on us (just kidding Herb!)
