8 DEPTH OF CUT Thckness, planng refers to the szng of lumber to a desred thckness whle creatng a level surface parallel to the opposte sde of the board. Board thckness whch the planer wll produce s ndcated by the scale (A), and depth-of-cut-gauge (B). Preset the planer to the desred thckness of fnshed workplace usng gauge (E). See =Workpece Thckness Gauge", page 6. Fgure 5- Depth-Of-Cut Depth-of-cut s adjusted by rasng or lowerng the rollemase (C) usng handle (D). Qualty of thckness planng depends on the operator's judgement about the depth of cut. Depth of cut depends on the wdth, hardness, dampness, gran dre_on and gran structure of the wood. Maxmum thckness of wood whch can be removed n one pass s 3/_,,for planng operatons on workpece up to 6" wde. Workplace must be postoned away from the center tab on the rollercase to cut _=". Maxmum thckness of wood whch can be removed n one pass s /6"for planng operatons on workpece from 6" up to 3" wde. For optmum planng performance, the depth of cut should be less than ¼6". Board should be planed wth shallow cuts untl the work has a level sde. Once a level surface has been created, flp the lumber and create parallel sdes. Plane alternate sdes untl the desred thckness s obtaned. When half of total depth of cut s taken from each sde, the board wll have a unform mosture content and addtonal dryng wll not cause t to warp. Depth of cut should be shallower when work s wder. When planng hardwood, take lght cuts or plane the wood n thn wdths. Make a test cut wth a test pece and verfy the thckness produced. Check accuracy of test cut pror to workng on fnshed product. AVOID DAMAGE TO BLADES Thckness planer s a precson woodworkng machne and should be used on qualty lumber only. Do not plane drty boards; drt and small stones are abrasve and wll wear out blade. Remove nals and staples. Use planer to cut wood only. Avod knots. Heavly cross-graned wood makes knots hard. Knots can come loose and jam blade. CAUTION: Any artcle that encounters planer blades may be forcbly ejected from planer creatng rsk of njury. PREPARE WORK Thckness planer works best when lumber has at least one flat surface. Use surface planer or jonter to create a flat surface. Twsted or severely warped boards can jam planer. Rp lumber n half to reduce magntude of warp. Work should be fed nto planer n same drecton as the gran of the wood. Sometmes gran wll change drectons n mddle of board. In such cases, f possble, cut board n mddle before planng so gran drecton s correct. CAUTION: Do not plane board whch s less than 5" long; force of cut could splt board and cause kckback. FEEDING WORK The planer s suppledwth planng blades mounted n the cutterhead and nfeed and outfeed rollersadjustedto the correct heght. Planer feed s automatc; t wll vary slghtly dependng on type of wood. Feed rate refers to rate at whch lumber travels through planer. Operator s responsble for algnng work so t wll feed properly. Rase/lower rollercase to produce the depth of cut desred. Stand on sde to whch the handle s attached. \ Fgure 6- Feedng Work Boards longer than 4" should have addtonal support from free standng materal stands. I 8

9 Poston the workpece wth the face to be planed on top. Turn the planer ON. Rest board end on n-feed roller plate and drect board nto planer. Gently slde workpece nto the nfeed sde of the planer untl the nfeed roller begns to advance the workpece. Let go of the workpece and allow automatc feed to advance the workpece. Do not push/pull on workpece. Move to the rear and receve planed lumber by graspng t n same manner as t was fed. CAUTION: To avod rsk of njury due to kckbacks, do not stand drectly n lne wth front or rear of planer. Do not grasp any porton of board whch has not gone past out-feed roller. Repeat ths operaton on all boards whch need to be same thckness. Planer wll operate best f kept n good condton and properly adjusted. CHECK FOR WORN BLADES Condton of blades wll affect precson of cut. Observe qualty of cut whch planer produces to check condton of blades. Dull blades wll tear, rather than sever wood fbers and produce fuzzy appearance. Rased gran wll occur when dull blades pound on wood that has varyng densty. Rased edge wll also be produced where blades have been ncked. REPLACE BLADES WARNING: Always turn planer OFF and dsconnect from power source before startng any mantenance work. Loosen and remove socket head bolts (A) from chp deflector (B) on the rear sde of planer. Remove chp deflector. Surface that the planer wll produce wll be smoother f shallower depth of cut s used. Avodng Snpe Snpe refers to a depresson at ether end of board caused by an uneven force on cutterhead when work s enterng or leavng planer. Snl_e wll occur when boards are not supported properly or when only one feed roller s n contact wth work at begnnng or end of cut. To avod snpe, gently push the board up whle feedng the work untl the ouffeed roller starts advancng t. Move to the rear and receve planed board by gently pushng t up when the nfeed roller looses contact wth the board. When planng more than one board of the same thckness, butt boards together to avod snpe. Snpe s more apparent when deeper cuts are taken. Feed work n drecton of gran. Work fed aganst gran wll have chpped, splntered edges. Fgure 8 - Remove Chp Deflector Carefully turn cutterhead by hand towards you untl t s stopped by the self-engagng latch. Loosen and remove sx bolts from gb (C). Fgure 9 - Remove Gb Bolts 9

10 Remove gbusng two magnets (D) provded. \ BRUSH INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT WARNING: Turn planer off and dsconnect from power source. Brush lfe depends on amount of load on motor. Regularly nspect brushes after 00 hours of use. Brushes are located on ether sde of planer motor.,fgure 0 - Remove GIb NOTE: Magnets can be easly dsengaged tltng them to left or rght. from gb by CAUTION: Blade edges are extremely sharp. Keep fngers away from blades at all tmes. Blade s held on poston by two pns. Gently lft old blades from the pn usng the two magnets. "Do not make contact wth the blade usng fngers. Use magnets only". Replace wth new blade and carefully poston t on the two pns usng the two magnets. Replace gb and algn the holes on the gb wth holes on the blade usng the two magnets. Secure gb to cutterhead usng sx bolts removed earler. Depress latch to release cutterhead. Release latch when cutterhead can be turned by hand. Turn cutterhead by hand untl t s stopped by selfengagng latch. Remove gb and blade as mentoned earler. Replace wth new blade and replace gb and secure t as mentoned earler. NOTE: Brushes sdes of planer. are located on both front and rear Replace sprng (B) f damaged, Replace carbon (C) f worn. Replace brushes and tghten brush holder. ADJUSTING TABLE LEVEL Refer to Fgures 4 and 5. The planer wll produce uneven depth of cut (tapered cut) f the rollercase (Fg. 5, Key No. 6) s not parallel wth the base (Fg. 4, Key No. 43). To restore parallelsm of the rollercase wth the base: Usng a test pece, measure the heght of the taper. Turn planer OFF and dsconnect form power source. Fold the front and rear extenson tables. Lay the planer carefully on t's back so that the bottom sde of the base s facng you. Clamp a vse pler (not suppled) on the left sde of shaft (Fg. 4, Key. No. 3) next to the gear (Fg. 4, Key. No. 0). Remove retanng rng (Fg. 4, Key. No. 30) and dsengage rght gear from the top gear (Fg. 4, Key. No. 0). Slowly rotate handle (Fg. 4, Key. No. ) to rase or lower rollercase. Rollercase wll move by 0.004" wth every turn of the gear by one tooth. Move rollercase to the requred dstance to offset the taper. Re-engage the rght and top gear and replace retanng rng to secure. Release and remove vse pler. 0

11 Set the planer back on t's base. Make a test cut to verfy adjustment. REPLACING V-BELT Refer to Fgures 3, 4 and 5. Inadequate tenson n the V-belt (Fg. 5, Key No. 84) wll cause the belt to slp from the motor pulley (Fg. 4, Key. No. 4) or drve pulley (Fg. 5, Key No. 85). Loose belt must be replaced. To replace V-belt: Turn planer off and unplug from power source. Loosen and remove screws (Fg. 4, Key. Nos. 3 and 4) on rght panel (Fg. 4, Key. No. 4). Remove panel.
