8 VW Samba STEP 7-A Insert the wheel (7-2) into the tyre (7-1). See the TIP box below. tip To make it easier to fit the tyre onto the wheel, either heat it slightly with a hair dryer or immerse it in hot water for a few minutes. Doing this will make the tyre softer and more pliable while you fit it, and it will harden again as it cools. STEP 7-B Lift the wall of the tyre over the edge of the wheel. Then turn the two around and repeat on the other side. 30

9 Step by Step The tyre in detail The wheels and tyres of your VW Samba are made with all the details of the real vehicle, such as the fixing nuts, the air valve, the balancing lead on the wheel, and the brand name and dimensions on the tyre, all accurate to the date. 12 VW Samba Modelling tools Assembling the VW Samba requires very few tools, and although some are provided with the collection, you can get more from modelling shops or hardware stores. SCREWDRIVERS Screwdrivers are the mostused tool throughout the assembly of your VW Samba. While a screwdriver is provided with Stage 2, it is advisable to have a range of precision screwdrivers to make working with the different sizes of screws easier, as using the wrong size screwdriver can damage either it or the screw. CRAFT KNIVES Another of the most useful tools needed for the VW Samba assembly is a craft knife. These sharp precision blades are perfect for trimming any burrs or flash from the parts, or removing any excess glue. 34

13 Step by Step The screws The screws used throughout this series have different designations and uses that should be identified to avoid mistakes when using them. IDENTIFYING SCREWS The screws throughout this series are provided in labelled bags that also come with replacement screws. The label on each bag identifies the type of screw in it and whether it is for use on metal or plastic. In the parts list on the first page of each stage, the dimensions in millimetres and name reference letters are given for each screw. Below are some examples of screws, so you can see how to identify them. The screws can be black or silver depending on their mounting location. This changes the name reference letters of the screw, but not its type and dimensions. BD x 3.5mm For metal The screws with the reference letters BD are machine screws, used to fix the metal parts together. The shank of this screw, BD03, is 1.8mm wide and 3.5mm long. BP x 4mm For plastic The screws with reference letters BP are self-tapping screws, used to assemble the plastic parts. The shank has fewer threads, which are more widely spaced apart. This example is 2.3 x 4mm. BD x 3 x 6.5mm For metal, with washer While this screw, BD01, is also a machine screw, the extra dimensions given show that it is a washer screw, with an extended area below the head. This screw has a 6.5mm washer. 35

16 VW Samba STEP 9-A Fit the brake drum (9-2) to the inside of the wheel (Stage 7) by placing it onto the pins, as shown. The pins are different sizes, so the drum will fit only one way round. STEP 9-B Press the drum flush against the wheel, as shown. STEP 9-C Now fit the brake (9-1) and the hub (9-3) together, engaging the indicated parts. 38

17 STEP 9-D Press the brake and the hub flush together. Step by Step STEP 9-E Insert the shaft of the hub into the hole in the centre of the drum and wheel. STEP 9-F Secure the parts together with a BD01 screw (9-5). STEP 9-G Hold the hub with one hand, and check that the wheel can turn freely. Loosen the screw slightly if it can t. 39

20 VW Samba STEP 10-A Place the hinge (10-2) onto the indicated point on the inside of the right front door (10-1), and secure it with two BD03 screws (10-9). STEP 10-B Insert the handle (10-3) through the opening in the door, as shown. Temporarily secure it with some masking tape (inset). STEP 10- C Insert the pin (10-4) through the part of the handle on the inside of the door. 42

21 Step by Step STEP 10-D Place the bracket (10-5) onto the pin and the post on the inside of the door. STEP 10-E Secure the bracket with a BD03 screw (10-9). STEP 10-F Next, insert the rod (10-6) into the spring (10-7). STEP 10- G Insert the free end of the rod through the opening in the handle, as shown. STEP 10-H Here is how the rod should be positioned once inserted. 43

22 VW Samba STEP 10-I Finally, mount the rod guide (10-8) onto the posts on each side of the rod, and secure it with two BD03 screws (10-9). The spring should be pulled back so that it is outside of the guide. STAGE COMPLETE where the parts fit 44

24 VW Samba STEP 11-A Align the holes of the upper door hinge (11-3) with those indicated in the right front door window frame (11-1). STEP 11-B Secure the hinge to the frame with two BP03 screws (11-5). STEP 11- C Fit the trim (11-2) into the groove along the outside of the frame, aligning the pins and corresponding holes. 46

25 STEP 11-D Carefully press the trim into place. Step by Step STEP 11-E Retrieve the right front door (Stage 10), and place the holes at the bottom of the window frame onto the posts at the top of the door (arrowed). STEP 11-F Secure the window frame to the door with four BD03 screws (11-4). 47

STEP 13-B Press the two parts together, as shown. STEP 13-C Check that the two parts are flush with each other. STEP 13-D Align the holes in the corners of the right front seat base (13-2) with the corresponding posts in the corners of the right front seat (13-1). 54

36 VW Samba STEP 14-A Fit the handle (14-4) into the hole along the top edge of the left front door trim middle panel (14-2). The handle can only fit in one position, as indicated. STEP 14-B Secure the handle from the other side of the panel with a BP03 screw (14-5). STEP 14-C Retrieve the left front door (Stage 6), and align the tab at either end of the middle panel with the corresponding slot at each end of the door. STEP 14-D Press the middle panel into place. The panel should be flush against the door. 58
