1 SECTION ROUGH CARPENTRY PART 1- GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 0 I Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY Section Includes: 1. Framing with dimension lumber. 2. Wood blocking and nailers. 3. Wood furring. 4. Plywood backing panels. 1.3 DEFINITIONS Dimension Lumber: Lumber of 2 inches nominal or greater but less than 5 inches nominal in least dimension. Lumber grading agencies, and the abbreviations used to reference them, include the following: 1. NLGA: National Lumber Grades Authority. 2. SPIB: The Southern Pine Inspection Bureau. 3. WWPA: Western Wood Products Association. 1.4 ACTION SUBMITTALS Product Data: For each type of process and factory-fabricated product. Indicate component materials and dimensions and include construction and application details. 1. Include data for wood-preservative treatment from chemical treatment manufacturer and certification by treating plant that treated materials comply with requirements. Indicate type of preservative used and net amount of preservative retained. 2. For products receiving a waterborne treatment, include statement that moisture content of treated materials was reduced to levels specified before shipment to Project site. 3. Include copies of warranties from chemical treatment manufacturers for each type of treatment. 1.5 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS Evaluation Repmis: For the following, from ICC-ES: Rough Carpentry

2 I. Wood-preservative-treated wood. 2. Power-driven fasteners. 3. Powder-actuated fasteners. 4. Expansion anchors. 1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE Testing Agency Qualifications: For testing agency providing classification marking for fireretardant treated material, an inspection agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction that periodically performs inspections to verify that the material bearing the classification marking is representative of the material tested. 1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING Stack lumber flat with spacers beneath and between each bundle to provide air circulation. Protect lumber from weather by covering with waterproof sheeting, securely anchored. Provide for air circulation around stacks and under coverings. PART 2 -PRODUCTS 2.1 WOOD PRODUCTS, GENERAL Lumber: DOC PS 20 and applicable rules of grading agencies indicated. If no grading agency is indicated, provide lumber that complies with the applicable rules of any rules-writing agency cetiified by the ALSC Board of Review. Provide lumber graded by an agency cetiified by the ALSC Board of Review to inspect and grade lumber under the rules indicated. 1. Factory mark each piece of lumber with grade stamp of grading agency. 2. Where nominal sizes ai e indicated, provide actual sizes required by DOC PS 20 for moisture content specified. Where actual sizes are indicated, they are minimum dressed sizes for dry lumber. 3. Provide dressed lumber, S4S, unless otherwise indicated. Maximum Moisture Content of Lumber: 19 percent for 2-inch nominal thickness or less, unless otherwise indicated. 2.2 WOOD-PRESERVATIVE-TREATED LUMBER Preservative Treatment by Pressure Process: A WPA U 1; Use Category UC2 for interior construction not in contact with the ground. I. Preservative Chemicals: Acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction and containing no arsenic or chromium. Do not use inorganic boron (SBX) for sill plates. Kiln-dry lumber after treatment to a maximum moisture content of 19 percent. Do not use material that is warped or that does not comply with requirements for untreated material Rough Carpentry

3 C. Mark lumber with treatment quality mark of an inspection agency approved by the ALSC Board of Review. D. Application: Treat items indicated on Drawings, and the following: 1. Wood sills, sleepers, blocking, furring, stripping, and similar concealed members m contact with masonry or concrete. 2. Wood framing and furring attached directly to masomy or concrete walls. 3. Wood floor plates that are installed over concrete slabs-on-grade. 2.3 DIMENSION LUMBER FRAMING Non-Load-Bearing Interior Partitions: Construction or No. 2 grade. 1. Application: All interior partitions. 2. Species: a. Hem-fir (nmih); NLG b. Mixed southern pine; SPI c. Spruce-pine-fir; NLG d. Hem-fir; WWP e. Northern species; NLG f. Western woods; WWP 2.4 MISCELLANEOUS LUMBER General: Provide miscellaneous lumber indicated and lumber for suppoti or attachment of other construction, including the following: 1. Blocking. 2. Nailers. 3. Furring 4. Patient lift supports. For items of dimension lumber size, provide Construction or No Hem-fir (north); NLG 2. Mixed southern pine; SPI 3. Spruce-pine-fir; NLG 4. Hem-fir; WWP 5. Western woods; WWP 6. Nmihern species; NLG C. For concealed boards, provide lumber with 19 percent maximum moisture content and any of the following species and grades: 1. Mixed southern pine; No. 2 grade; SPI 2. Hem-fir or hem-fir (notih); Construction or No. 2 Common; WWP 3. Spruce-pine-fir (south) or spruce-pine-fir; Construction or No.2 Common grade; WWP Rough Carpentry

4 4. Northern species; No. 2 Common grade; NLG 5. Western woods; Construction or No.2 Common grade; WWP D. For blocking and nailers used for attachment of other construction, select and cut lumber to eliminate knots and other defects that will interfere with attachment of other work. 2.5 PLYWOOD BACKING PANELS Equipment Backing Panels: DOC PS 1, Exterior, AC in thickness indicated or, if not indicated, not less than 3/4-inch nominal thickness. 2.6 FASTENERS General: Provide fasteners of size and type indicated that comply with requirements specified in this article for material and manufacture. 1. Where rough carpentry is exposed to weather, in ground contact, pressure-preservative treated, or in area of high relative humidity, provide fasteners with hot-dip zinc coating complying with ASTM A 153/ A 153M. c. D. E. F. G. Nails, Brads, and Staples: ASTM F Power-Driven Fasteners: NES NER-272. Wood Screws: ASME B Lag Bolts: ASME Bl Bolts: Steel bolts complying with ASTM A 307, Grade A; with ASTM A 563 hex nuts and, where indicated, flat washers. Expansion Anchors: Anchor bolt and sleeve assembly of material indicated below with capability to sustain, without failure, a load equal to six times the load imposed when installed in unit masonry assemblies and equal to four times the load imposed when installed in concrete as determined by testing per ASTM E 488 conducted by a qualified independent testing and inspecting agency. 2.7 MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS Adhesives for Gluing to Concrete or Masomy: Formulation complying with ASTM D 3498 that is approved for use indicated by adhesive manufacturer. 1. Adhesives shall have a VOC content of 70 gil or less when calculated according to 40 CFR 59, Subpati D (EPA Method 24). Water-Repellent Preservative: NWWDA-tested and -accepted formulation containing 3-iodo-2- propynyl butyl carbamate, combined with an insecticide containing chloropyrifos as its active ingredient Rough Carpentry

5 PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 INSTALLATION, GENERAL c. D. E. F. G. H. Set rough carpentry to required levels and lines, with members plumb, true to line, cut, and fitted. Fit rough carpentry to other construction; scribe and cope as needed for accurate fit. Locate furring, nailers, blocking, and similar supports to comply with requirements for attaching other construction. Framing Standard: Comply with AF&PA's WCD 1, "Details for Conventional Wood Frame Construction," unless otherwise indicated. Install plywood backing panels by fastening to studs; coordinate locations with utilities requiring backing panels. Install fire-retardant treated plywood backing panels with classification marking of testing agency exposed to view. Metal Framing Anchors: Install metal framing anchors to comply with manufacturer's written instructions. Install fasteners through each fastener hole. Do not splice structural members between supports unless otherwise indicated. Provide blocking and framing as indicated and as required to support facing materials, fixtures, specialty items, and trim. Soti and select lumber so that natural characteristics will not interfere with installation or with fastening other materials to lumber. Do not use materials with defects that interfere with function of member or pieces that are too small to use with minimum number of joints or optimum joint arrangement. Securely attach rough carpentry work to substrate by anchoring and fastening as indicated, complying with the following: 1. NES NER-272 for power-driven fasteners. 2. Table , "Fastening Schedule," in ICC's International Building Code. 3. Table R602.3(1), "Fastener Schedule for Structural Members," and Table R602.3(2), "Alternate Attachments," in ICC's International Residential Code for One- and Two Family Dwellings. I. Use steel common nails unless otherwise indicated. Select fasteners of size that will not fully penetrate members where opposite side will be exposed to view or will receive finish materials. Make tight connections between members. Install fasteners without splitting wood. Drive nails snug but do not countersink nail heads unless otherwise indicated. 3.2 WOOD BLOCKING, AND NAILER INSTALLATION Install where indicated and where required for attaching other work. Form to shapes indicated and cut as required for true line and level of attached work. Coordinate locations with other work involved Rough Carpentry

6 c. Attach items to substrates to support applied loading. Recess bolts and nuts flush with surfaces unless otherwise indicated. Where wood-preservative-treated lumber is installed adjacent to metal decking, install continuous flexible flashing separator between wood and metal decking. 3.3 WOOD FURRING INSTALLATION Install level and plumb with closure strips at edges and openings. Shim with wood as required for tolerance of finish work. Furring: Install I-by-2-inch nominal-size furring vertically at 16 inches o.c. 3.4 c. WALL AND PARTITION FRAMING INSTALLATION General: Provide single bottom plate and double top plates using members of 2-inch nominal (38-mm actual) thickness whose widths equal that of studs, except single top plate may be used for non-load-bearing partitions. Fasten plates to suppotting construction unless otherwise indicated. 1. For interior partitions and walls, provide 2-by-4-inch nominal-spaced I6 inches o.c. unless otherwise indicated. 2. Provide continuous horizontal blocking at midheight of pmtitions more than 96 inches high, using members of 2-inch nominal thickness and of same width as wall or pmtitions. Construct corners and intersections with three or more studs. Frame openings with multiple studs and headers. Provide nailed header members of thickness equal to width of studs. Suppott headers on jamb studs. I. For non-load-bearing partitions, provide double-jamb studs and headers not less than 4- inch nominal depth for openings 48 inches and less in width, 6-inch nominal depth for openings 48 to 72 inches in width, 8-inch nominal depth for openings 72 to I20 inches in width, and not less than 10-inch nominal depth for openings I 0 to I2 feet in width. 3.5 PROTECTION Protect wood that has been treated with inorganic boron (SBX) from weather. If, despite protection, inorganic boron-treated wood becomes wet, apply EPA-registered borate treatment. Apply borate solution by spraying to comply with EPA-registered label. Protect rough carpentry from weather. If, despite protection, rough carpentry becomes wet, apply EPA-registered borate treatment. Apply borate solution by spraying to comply with EPAregistered label. 7 SECTION PLASTIC-LAMINATE-FACED ARCHITECTURAL CABINETS PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 SUMMARY Section Includes: 1. Plastic-laminate-faced architectural cabinets. 2. Wood furring, blocking, shims, and hanging strips for installing plastic-laminate-faced architectural cabinets unless concealed within other construction before cabinet installation. 1.2 ACTION SUBMITTALS Product Data: For each type of product, including panel products, high-pressure decorative laminate adhesive for bonding plastic laminate, fire-retardant-treated materials and cabinet hardware and accessories. Shop Drawings: Show location of each item, dimensioned plans and elevations, large-scale details, attachment devices, and other components. C. Samples: 1. Plastic laminates, for each color, pattern, and surface finish. 1.3 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS Woodwork Quality Standard Compliance Cet1ificates: A WI Quality Certification Program certificates. 1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE Fabricator Qualifications: Certified participant in A WI's Quality Certification Program. Installer Qualifications: Fabricator of products. 1.5 FIELD CONDITIONS Environmental Limitations: Do not deliver or install cabinets until building is enclosed, wet work is complete, and HV AC system is operating and maintaining temperature and relative humidity at occupancy levels during the remainder of the construction period Plastic-Laminate-Faced Architectural Cabinets

8 PART 2 -PRODUCTS 2.1 PLASTIC-LAMINATE-FACED ARCHITECTURAL CABINETS Quality Standard: Unless otherwise indicated, comply with the "Architectural Woodwork Standards" for grades of architectural plastic-laminate cabinets indicated for construction, finishes, installation, and other requirements. 1. Provide labels from A WI cettification program indicating that woodwork, including installation, complies with requirements of grades specified. Grade: Premium C. Certified Wood: Plastic-laminate cabinets shall be made from wood products certified as "FSC Pure according to FSC STD , "FSC Principles and Criteria for Forest Stewardship," and FSC STD , "FSC Standard for Chain of Custody Cettification." D. Type of Construction: Frameless. E. Cabinet, Door, and Drawer Front Intetface Style: Flush overlay. F. High-Pressure Decorative Laminate: NEMA LD 3, grades as indicated or if not indicated, as required by woodwork quality standard. 1. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide products indicated in the Finish Schedule or comparable products by one of the following: a. Formica Corporation. b. Lamin-Art, Inc. c. Wilsonart International; Div. ofpremark International, Inc. G. Laminate Cladding for Exposed Surfaces: 1. Horizontal Surfaces: Grade HGS 2. Vertical Surfaces: Grade VGS 3. Pattern Direction: As directed H. Materials for Semiexposed Surfaces: 1. Surfaces Other Than Drawer Bodies: High-pressure decorative laminate, NEMA LD 3, Grade VGS. 2. Drawer Sides and Backs: Thermoset decorative panels with PVC or polyester edge banding. 3. Drawer Bottoms: Hardwood plywood. I. Colors, Patterns, and Finishes: Provide materials and products that result in colors and textures of exposed laminate surfaces complying with the following requirements: 1. Color and Finish Selections shall be made by the Architect from manufacturer's full range of colors and finishes Plastic-Laminate-Faced Architectural Cabinets

9 2.2 WOOD MATERIALS Wood Products: Provide materials that comply with requirements of referenced quality standard for each type of woodwork and quality grade specified unless otherwise indicated. 1. Wood Moisture Content: 5 to 10 percent. Composite Wood and Agrifiber Products: Provide materials that comply with requirements of referenced quality standard for each type of woodwork and quality grade specified unless otherwise indicated. I. Medium-Density Fiberboard: ANSI A208.2, Grade 130, made with binder containing no urea formaldehyde. 2. Particleboard: ANSI A208.1, Grade M-2 Grade M-2, made with binder containing no urea formaldehyde. 3. Softwood Plywood: DOC PS I. 4. Veneer-Faced Panel Products (Hardwood Plywood): HPV A HP-1, made with adhesive containing no urea formaldehyde. 5. Thermoset Decorative Panels: Patiicleboard or medium-density fiberboard finished with thermally fused, melamine-impregnated decorative paper and complying with requirements ofnema LD 3, Grade VGL, for test methods 3.3, 3.4, 3.6, 3.8, and CABINET HARDWARE AND ACCESSORIES c. D. E. Frameless Concealed Hinges (European Type): BHMA A 156.9, BO 1602, self closing. Back-Mounted Pulls: BHMA Al56.9, B Wire Pulls: Back mounted, solid metal, 4 inches long, 5/16 inch in diameter. ShelfRests: BHMA Al56.9, B04013; metal. Drawer Slides: BHMA Al56.9. I. Grade I and Grade 2: Side mounted and extending under bottom edge of drawer; fullextension type; Epoxy-coated steel with polymer rollers. 2. 10 2.4 C. D. E. MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS Furring, Blocking, Shims, and Hanging Strips: Softwood or hardwood lumber, kiln dried to less than 15 percent moisture content. Anchors: Select material, type, size, and finish required for each substrate for secure anchorage. Provide metal expansion sleeves or expansion bolts for post-installed anchors. Use nonferrousmetal or hot-dip galvanized anchors and inserts at inside face of exterior walls and at floors. Adhesives: Do not use adhesives that contain urea formaldehyde. Adhesives: Use adhesives that meet the testing and product requirements of the California Depmiment of Health Services' "Standard Practice for the Testing of Volatile Organic Emissions from Various Sources Using Small-Scale Environmental Chambers." Adhesive for Bonding Plastic Laminate: Contact cement. 1. Adhesive for Bonding Edges: Hot-melt adhesive or adhesive specified above for faces. 2.5 FABRICATION Complete fabrication, including assembly and hardware application, to maximum extent possible before shipment to Project site. Disassemble components only as necessary for shipment and installation. Where necessary for fitting at site, provide ample allowance for scribing, trimming, and fitting. Shop-cut openings to maximum extent possible to receive hardware, appliances, electrical work, and similar items. Locate openings accurately and use templates or roughing-in diagrams to produce accurately sized and shaped openings. Sand edges of cutouts to remove splinters and burrs. PART 3 -EXECUTION 3.1 PREPARATION Before installation, condition cabinets to average prevailing humidity conditions in installation areas. 3.2 INSTALLATION c. Grade: Install cabinets to comply with same grade as item to be installed. Install cabinets level, plumb, true, and straight. Shim as required with concealed shims. Install level and plumb to a tolerance of 1/8 inch in 96 inches. Scribe and cut cabinets to fit adjoining work, refinish cut surfaces, and repair damaged finish at cuts Plastic-Laminate-Faced Architectural Cabinets

11 D. Anchor cabinets to anchors or blocking built in or directly attached to substrates. Secure with countersunk, concealed fasteners and blind nailing. Use fine finishing nails or finishing screws for exposed fastening, countersunk and filled flush with woodwork. E. Cabinets: Install without distortion so doors and drawers fit openings properly and are accurately aligned. Adjust hardware to center doors and drawers in openings and to provide unencumbered operation. Complete installation of hardware and accessory items as indicated. 1. Install cabinets with no more than 1/8 inch in 96-inch sag, bow, or other variation from a straight line. 2. Fasten wall cabinets through back, near top and bottom, and at ends not more than 16 inches o.c. with No. 10 wafer-head screws sized for not less than 1-1/2-inch penetration into wood framing, blocking, or hanging strips.
