2 SECTION ROUGH CARPENTRY PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. This Section includes the following: 1. Wood blocking and nailers. 2. Miscellaneous plywood. B. Related Sections include the following: 1. Division 05 Section Metal Fabrications for post-installed anchors. 2. Division 06 Section "Sheathing" for sheathing, subflooring, and underlayment. 3. Division 26 Section General Electrical Panels for plywood backing panels. 1.3 DEFINITIONS A. Exposed Framing: Framing not concealed by other construction. B. Dimension Lumber: Lumber of 2 inches nominal or greater but less than 5 inches nominal in least dimension. C. Timber: Lumber of 5 inches nominal or greater in least dimension. D. Boards or Strips: Lumber of less than 2 inches nominal size in least dimension. E. Lumber grading agencies, and the abbreviations used to reference them, include the following: 1. NeLMA: Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers' Association. 2. NLGA: National Lumber Grades Authority. 3. RIS: Redwood Inspection Service. 4. SPIB: The Southern Pine Inspection Bureau. 5. WCLIB: West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau. 6. WWPA: Western Wood Products Association. 1.4 SUBMITTALS A. Informational/Quality Assurance/Control Submittals: 1. Product Data: For each type of process and factory-fabricated product. Indicate component materials and dimensions and include construction and application details. a. Include data for wood-preservative treatment from chemical treatment manufacturer and certification by treating plant that treated materials comply with requirements. Indicate type of preservative used and net amount of preservative retained. 1) Indicate compliance with AWPA requirements. 2) Indicate products contain no arsenic or chromium. b. Include data for fire-retardant treatment from chemical treatment manufacturer and certification by treating plant that treated materials comply with requirements. Include physical properties of treated materials based on testing by a qualified independent testing agency. c. For products receiving a waterborne treatment, include statement that moisture content of treated materials was reduced to levels specified before shipment to Project site ROUGH CARPENTRY

3 1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Testing Agency Qualifications: For testing agency providing classification marking for fireretardant-treated material, an inspection agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction that periodically performs inspections to verify that the material bearing the classification marking is representative of the material tested. B. Environmental Conditions: Preservative treatment shall not contain hazardous materials as arsenic or chromium. Chromated copper arsenate (CCA) and ammoniacal copper zinc arsenate (ACZA) shall not be used C. Preinstallation Conference: Conduct conference at Project site, unless otherwise noted. Attendees shall include installers whose work requires in-wall blocking. 1. Review in-wall blocking. 2. Distribute information on items furnished by the Owner and installed by the Contractor. 1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Stack lumber flat with spacers between each bundle to provide air circulation. Provide for air circulation around stacks and under coverings. 1.7 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Installer must examine the substrates and supporting structure and the conditions under which the Carpentry Work is to be installed; and notify the A/E in writing of conditions detrimental to the Work. Do not proceed with the installation until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. B. Coordination: Fit Carpentry Work to other work; scribe and cope as required for accurate fit. Correlate location of furring, nailers, blocking, grounds, and similar supports to allow proper attachment of other work. 1. Contractor shall confirm with roofing system manufacturer that adhesives come into contact with roof membrane are compatible and acceptable. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 WOOD PRODUCTS, GENERAL A. Lumber: DOC PS 20 and applicable rules of grading agencies indicated. If no grading agency is indicated, provide lumber that complies with the applicable rules of any rules-writing agency certified by the ALSC Board of Review. Provide lumber graded by an agency certified by the ALSC Board of Review to inspect and grade lumber under the rules indicated. 1. Factory mark each piece of lumber with grade stamp of grading agency. 2. For exposed lumber indicated to receive a stained or natural finish, mark grade stamp on end or back of each piece. 3. Where nominal sizes are indicated, provide actual sizes required by DOC PS 20 for moisture content specified. Where actual sizes are indicated, they are minimum dressed sizes for dry lumber. 4. Provide dressed lumber, S4S, unless otherwise indicated. B. Maximum Moisture Content of Lumber: 19 percent. 2.2 WOOD-PRESERVATIVE-TREATED LUMBER (WPTL) A. Preservative Treatment by Pressure Process: AWPA U1; Use Category UC2 for interior construction not in contact with the ground, Use Category UC3b for exterior construction not in contact with the ground, and Use Category UC4a for items in contact with the ground. 1. Preservative Chemicals: Acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction and containing no arsenic or chromium. a. Unless otherwise noted: Use one of the following formulations of inorganic boron. 1) Sodium-octaborate (SBX) or disodium-octaborate-tetrahydrate (DOT) ROUGH CARPENTRY

4 2) Zinc borates (ZB) for treating engineered wood or wood composites during the manufacturing process. b. For sleepers sill plates and for wood that will be installed in a location where it will be in contact with the ground or will be exposed to liquid water (continuously or periodically), use one of the following copper formulations: 1) Alkaline-copper-quat (quaternary ammonium) (ACQ) 2) Copper azole, Type B (CA-B). 3) Micronized Copper Azole (MCA). B. Kiln-dry or air-dry lumber after treatment to a maximum moisture content of 19 percent. Do not use material that is warped or that does not comply with requirements for untreated material. C. Mark lumber with treatment quality mark of an inspection agency approved by the ALSC Board of Review. D. Application: Treat items indicated on Drawings, and the following: 1. Wood cants, nailers, curbs, equipment support bases, blocking, stripping, and similar members in connection with roofing, flashing, vapor barriers, and waterproofing. 2. Wood sills, sleepers, blocking, furring, and similar concealed members in contact with masonry or concrete. 2.3 FIRE-RETARDANT-TREATED MATERIALS (FRTM) A. General: Where fire-retardant-treated materials are indicated, use materials complying with requirements in this article, that are acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction, and with firetest-response characteristics specified as determined by testing identical products per test method indicated by a qualified testing agency. B. Fire-Retardant-Treated Lumber and Plywood by Pressure Process: Products with a flame spread index of 25 or less when tested according to ASTM E 84, and with no evidence of significant progressive combustion when the test is extended an additional 20 minutes, and with the flame front not extending more than 10.5 feet beyond the centerline of the burners at any time during the test. 1. Use treatment that does not promote corrosion of metal fasteners. 2. Exterior Type: Treated materials shall comply with requirements specified above for fireretardant-treated lumber and plywood by pressure process after being subjected to accelerated weathering according to ASTM D Use for exterior locations and where indicated. 3. Design Value Adjustment Factors: Treated lumber shall be tested according ASTM D 5664 and design value adjustment factors shall be calculated according to ASTM D C. Kiln-dry lumber after treatment to a maximum moisture content of 19 percent. Kiln-dry plywood after treatment to a maximum moisture content of 15 percent. D. Identify fire-retardant-treated wood with appropriate classification marking of qualified testing agency. E. Application: Treat 1. Concealed blocking. 2. Plywood backing panels. 2.4 DIMENSION LUMBER FRAMING A. Non-Load-Bearing Interior Partitions: Construction, Stud, or No. 3 grade of any species. B. Framing Other Than Non-Load-Bearing Interior Partitions: Any species and grade with a modulus of elasticity of at least 1,500,000 psi and an extreme fiber stress in bending of at least 850 psi for 2-inch nominal thickness and 12-inch nominal width for single-member use ROUGH CARPENTRY

5 2.5 MISCELLANEOUS LUMBER A. General: Provide miscellaneous lumber indicated and lumber for support or attachment of other construction, including the following: 1. Blocking. 2. Nailers. 3. Furring. B. For items of dimension lumber size, provide Standard, Stud, or No. 3 grade lumber with 19 percent maximum moisture content of any species. 1. Provide No. 2 grade Douglas Fir or Southern Yellow Pine nailers associated with roofing and roof flashing. C. For concealed boards, provide lumber with 19 percent maximum moisture content and any of the following species and grades: 1. Mixed southern pine, No. 3 grade; SPIB. 2. Hem-fir or hem-fir (north), Standard or 3 Common grade; NLGA, WCLIB, or WWPA. 3. Spruce-pine-fir (south) or spruce-pine-fir, Standard or 3 Common grade; NeLMA, NLGA, WCLIB, or WWPA. D. For blocking not used for attachment of other construction, Utility, Stud, or No. 3 grade lumber of any species may be used provided that it is cut and selected to eliminate defects that will interfere with its attachment and purpose. E. For blocking and nailers used for attachment of other construction, select and cut lumber to eliminate knots and other defects that will interfere with attachment of other work. 2.6 MISCELLANEOUS PLYWOOD PANELS A. General: Where plywood panels will be used for the following concealed types of applications, provide APA performance rated panels complying with requirements indicated for grade designation, span rating, exposure durability classification, edge detail (where applicable), and thickness. 1. Plywood Shims, Nailers, and Blocking for Roof Insulation Stops: Shall be APA UNDERLAYMENT C-C PLUGGED EXT. 2.7 FASTENERS A. General: Provide fasteners of size and type indicated that comply with requirements specified in this Article for material and manufacture. 1. Where rough carpentry is exposed to weather, in ground contact, preservative treated, or in area of high relative humidity, provide fasteners with hot-dip zinc coating complying with ASTM A 153 or of Type 304 stainless steel. a. Provide Class D coating for fasteners 3/8-inch diameter and less. Provide Class C coating for larger fasteners. B. Nails, Brads, and Staples: ASTM F C. Power-Driven Fasteners: ICC-ES AC Exception: Powder-activated/actuated fasteners that involve a projectile propelled by a charge of carbon-dioxide or gun powder are not allowed. D. Wood Screws: ASME B E. Lag Bolts: ASME B F. Bolts: Steel bolts complying with ASTM A 307, Grade A; with ASTM A 563 hex nuts and, where indicated, flat washers ROUGH CARPENTRY

6 G. Expansion Anchors: Anchor bolt and sleeve assembly of material indicated below with capability to sustain, without failure, a load equal to 6 times the load imposed when installed in unit masonry assemblies and equal to 4 times the load imposed when installed in concrete as determined by testing per ASTM E 488 conducted by a qualified independent testing and inspecting agency. 1. Material: Carbon-steel components, zinc plated to comply with ASTM B 633, Class Fe/Zn 5. H. Post-Installed Anchors: Refer to Division 05 Section Metal Fabrications. 2.8 MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS A. Adhesives for Gluing Furring and Sleepers to Concrete or Masonry: Formulation complying with ASTM D 3498 that is approved for use indicated by adhesive manufacturer. B. Water-Repellent Preservative: NWWDA-tested and -accepted formulation containing 3-iodo-2- propynyl butyl carbamate, combined with an insecticide containing chlorpyrifos as its active ingredient. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 INSTALLATION, GENERAL A. Set rough carpentry to required levels and lines, with members plumb, true to line, cut, and fitted. Fit rough carpentry to other construction; scribe and cope as needed for accurate fit. Locate furring, nailers, blocking, and similar supports to comply with requirements for attaching other construction. B. Framing Standard: Comply with AF&PA's WCD1, "Details for Conventional Wood Frame Construction," unless otherwise indicated. C. Do not splice structural members between supports, unless otherwise indicated. D. Install plywood backing panels by fastening to studs; coordinate locations with utilities requiring backing panels. Install fire-retardant-treated plywood backing panels with classification marking of testing agency exposed to view. E. Provide blocking and framing as indicated and as required to support facing materials, fixtures, specialty items, and trim. F. Provide fire blocking in furred spaces, stud spaces, and other concealed cavities as indicated and as follows: 1. Fire block furred spaces of walls, at each floor level, at ceiling, and at not more than 96 inches o.c. with solid wood blocking or noncombustible materials accurately fitted to close furred spaces. 2. Fire block concealed spaces of wood-framed walls and partitions at each floor level, at ceiling line of top story, and at not more than 96 inches o.c. Where fire blocking is not inherent in framing system used, provide closely fitted solid wood blocks of same width as framing members and 2-inch nominal- thickness. 3. Fire block concealed spaces between floor sleepers with same material as sleepers to limit concealed spaces to not more than 100 sq. ft. and to solidly fill space below partitions. 4. Fire block concealed spaces behind combustible cornices and exterior trim at not more than 20 feet o.c. G. Sort and select lumber so that natural characteristics will not interfere with installation or with fastening other materials to lumber. Do not use materials with defects that interfere with function of member or pieces that are too small to use with minimum number of joints or optimum joint arrangement. 1. Partial boards shall be fastened at a rate commensurate with full boards and shall have not less than two (2) fasteners per piece ROUGH CARPENTRY

7 H. Comply with AWPA M4 for applying field treatment to cut surfaces of preservative-treated lumber. 1. Use inorganic boron for items that are continuously protected from liquid water. 2. Use copper naphthenate for items not continuously protected from liquid water. I. Securely attach rough carpentry work to substrate by anchoring and fastening as indicated, complying with the following: 1. ICC-ES ESR-1539 for power-driven fasteners. J. Use common wire nails, unless otherwise indicated. Select fasteners of size that will not fully penetrate members where opposite side will be exposed to view or will receive finish materials. Make tight connections between members. Install fasteners without splitting wood; do not countersink nail heads, unless otherwise indicated. K. For exposed work, arrange fasteners in straight rows parallel with edges of members, with fasteners evenly spaced, and with adjacent rows staggered. 1. Use finishing nails, unless otherwise indicated. Countersink nail heads and fill holes with wood filler. 3.2 WOOD SLEEPER, BLOCKING, AND NAILER INSTALLATION A. Install where indicated and where required for attaching other work. Form to shapes indicated and cut as required for true line and level of attached work. Coordinate locations with other work involved. 1. Install additional fasteners, as required to counteract minor warpage or variances in substrate, and to hold tight and true to lines. 2. When using multiple nailer courses, weave corners and stagger end joints a minimum of 3 feet from underlying course. B. Attach items to substrates to support applied loading. Recess bolts and nuts flush with surfaces, unless otherwise indicated. Build into masonry during installation of masonry work. Where possible, anchor to formwork before concrete placement. C. Where wood-preservative-treated lumber is installed adjacent to metal decking, install continuous flexible flashing separator between wood and metal decking. D. Wood Nailers at Low Slope Roof: Minimum thickness of nailers must be such that the top of the nailer is flush with the top of the membrane underlayment. Wood nailers are required in any situation where 1 inch or greater of insulation is added to the roof perimeter edge. 1. Wood nailers shall be #2 treated lumber or better and shall be fastened to the deck, wall, or existing secure nailer in such a manner that they resist 200 lbs. of force per ft. of nailer in any direction. Fasteners used to attach wood nailers shall be spaced no greater than 18 inches apart and no less than 6 inches from end. Nailer attachment shall meet hereinbefore requirements and those of Factory Mutual Loss Prevention Data Sheet E. Wood Nailers at Flashing and Sheet Metal at Low Slope Roof: Minimum thickness of the nailers must be such that the top of the nailers are flush with the top of the membrane underlayment. 1. Wood nailers are required for securement of metal edgings, scuppers, insulated pipes. a. The width of the wood nailers shall be 5-1/2 inches minimum, and must exceed the width of the metal flange of edgings and insulated metal collars by 1/2 inch. 2. Lumber shall be preservative treated with inorganic boron. 3. Wood nailers must be #2 grade lumber or better and shall be fastened to the deck or wall in such a manner that they resist 200 pounds of force per linear foot of nailer in any direction. Fasteners used to attach wood nailers must be spaced no greater than 18 inches apart. Wood nailers are required in any situation where 1 inch or greater of insulation is added to the roof perimeter edge. Top of the nailers must be flush with the top of the roof membrane underlayment. Wood nailers are not required at a change of plane such as the intersection between a parapet wall and the decking ROUGH CARPENTRY

8 F. Wood blocking, nailers, and grounds shall be provided as necessary to receive woodwork, lockers, cabinets, and other finish items. 3.3 PROTECTION A. Protect wood that has been treated with inorganic boron (SBX) from weather. If, despite protection, inorganic boron-treated wood becomes wet, apply EPA-registered borate treatment. Apply borate solution by spraying to comply with EPA-registered label. B. Protect rough carpentry from weather. If, despite protection, rough carpentry becomes sufficiently wet that moisture content exceeds that specified, apply EPA-registered borate treatment. Apply borate solution by spraying to comply with EPA-registered label. END OF SECTION ROUGH CARPENTRY

9 SECTION SHEATHING PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. This Section includes the following: 1. Wall sheathing. 2. Sheathing joint-and-penetration treatment. B. Related Sections include the following: 1. Division 06 Section "Rough Carpentry" for miscellaneous plywood panels. 2. Division 07 Section Thermal Insulation for insulation within framing. 3. Division 07 Section Direct Applied Exterior Finish System. 4. Division 07 Roofing Sections for coordination of parapet insulation as substrate for roofing membranes. 1.3 SUBMITTALS A. Informational/Quality Assurance/Control Submittals: 1. Product Data: For each type of process and factory-fabricated product. Indicate component materials and dimensions and include construction and application details. a. Include data for wood-preservative treatment from chemical treatment manufacturer and certification by treating plant that treated plywood complies with requirements. Indicate type of preservative used and net amount of preservative retained. b. Include data for fire-retardant treatment from chemical treatment manufacturer and certification by treating plant that treated plywood complies with requirements. Include physical properties of treated materials. c. For products receiving a waterborne treatment, include statement that moisture content of treated materials was reduced to levels specified before shipment to Project site. 1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Source Requirements: For roofing applications, where insulation is installed in multiple courses, insulation must be from same manufacturer for all layers (complete system). B. Pre-Installation Conference; Convene prior to commencing work of this Section. Review installation procedures and coordination required with Related Work and the following: 1. Review wall assemblies for potential interference and conflicts and coordinate layout and support provisions for interfacing work. 2. Review continuous insulation wall panels installation methods and procedures related to application, including manufacturers, installation guidelines. 3. Review firestopping requirements and weather resistive membrane requirements and placement locations. 4. Review field quality control procedures. 1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Stack panels flat with spacers between each bundle to provide air circulation. Provide for air circulation around stacks and under coverings. Protect sheathing from weather by covering with waterproof sheeting, securely anchored SHEATHING

10 B. Store composite nail board sheathing products off the ground, in dry conditions, under cover and in manufacturer's unopened packaging until ready for installation. 1. The manufacturer's plastic wrapping is provided for protection during shipment only. Replace any panels that become wet before installation. C. Install no more insulation in one day than can be covered the same day with underlayment or membrane flashing. 1. Do not expose insulation to excessive heat, sparks, or open flame. 1.6 SEQUENCING A. Coordinate with installation of weather and air barrier systems. B. Ensure that products of this Section are supplied to affected trades in time to prevent interruption of construction progress. C. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer s absolute limits. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. In other Part 2 articles where titles below introduce lists, the following requirements apply for product selection: 1. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide product by the manufacturers specified. 2. Products: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide one of the products specified. B. Products of other manufacturers will be considered for acceptance provided they equal or exceed the material requirements and functional qualities of the specified product. Requests for A/E s approval must be accompanied by the Substitution Request Form and complete technical data for evaluation. All materials for evaluation must be received by the Project Manager and Specification Department at least 10 days prior to bid due date. Additional approved manufacturers will be issued by Addendum. 2.2 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS A. Fire-Resistance Ratings: As tested according to ASTM E 119; testing by a qualified testing agency. Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing agency. 1. Fire-Resistance Ratings: Indicated by design designations from UL s Fire Resistance Directory or from the listings of another qualified testing agency. B. Fire Resistance: Exterior wall system and component materials part of cold-formed metal framing assembly shall comply with the following requirements: 1. System complies with one of the following: NFPA 285, FM 4800, UL 1040, or UL 1715; Standard Method of Test for the Evaluation of Flammability Characteristics of Exterior Non-Load Bearing Wall Assemblies Containing Combustible Components using the Intermediate Scale, Multi-Story Test Apparatus. 2. Firestopping measures, per requirements of authorities with jurisdiction, shall be included at the floor line in the cold-formed stud cavity when the wall assembly extends beyond the floor line. C. Continuous Insulation (Wall Sheathing): Products shall meet the continuous insulation standards of ASHRAE 90.1 and applicable Building Codes for commercial exterior wall applications in accordance with requirements of authorities with jurisdiction. 2.3 WOOD PANEL PRODUCTS, GENERAL A. Plywood: Either DOC PS 1 or DOC PS 2, unless otherwise indicated SHEATHING

11 B. Thickness: As needed to comply with requirements specified, but not less than thickness indicated. C. Factory mark panels to indicate compliance with applicable standard. 2.4 PRESERVATIVE-TREATED PLYWOOD A. Preservative Treatment by Pressure Process: AWPA U1; Use Category UC2 [for interior construction not in contact with the ground, Use Category UC36 for exterior construction not in contact with ground, and Use Category UC4a for items in contact with the ground]. 1. Preservative Chemicals: Acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction and containing no arsenic or chromium. a. Unless otherwise noted: use one of the following formulations of inorganic boron. 1) Sodium-octaborate (SBX) or disodium-octaborate-tetrahydrate (DOT). 2) Zinc borates (ZB) for treating engineered wood or wood composites during the manufacturing process. b. For sleepers, sill plates and for wood that will be installed in a location where it will be in contact with the ground or will be exposed to liquid water (continuously or periodically), use one of the following copper formulations: 1) Alkaline-copper-quat (quaternary ammonium) (ACQ) 2) Copper acole, Type B (CA-B). B. Mark plywood with appropriate classification marking of an inspection agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. C. Application: Treat only items indicated on Drawings and the following: 1. Plywood in contact with masonry or concrete. 2. Plywood used with roofing, flashing, vapor barriers, and waterproofing. 2.5 FIRE-RETARDANT-TREATED PLYWOOD A. General: Where fire-retardant-treated materials are indicated, use materials complying with requirements in this article that are acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction and with firetest-response characteristics specified as determined by testing identical products per test method indicated by a qualified testing agency. B. Interior Type A: Treated materials shall have a moisture content of 28 percent or less when tested according to ASTM D 3201 at 92 percent relative humidity. Use where exterior type is not indicated. 4. Design Value Adjustment Factors: Treated lumber plywood shall be tested according ASTM D 5516 and design value adjustment factors shall be calculated according to ASTM D Span ratings after treatment shall be not less than span ratings specified. C. Kiln-dry material after treatment to maximum moisture content of 15 percent. Do not use material that is warped or does not comply with requirements for untreated material. D. Identify fire-retardant-treated plywood with appropriate classification marking of qualified testing agency. E. Application: Treat plywood indicated on Drawings, and the following: 1. Wall sheathing within exterior wall assembly SHEATHING

12 2.6 WALL SHEATHING A. Plywood Wall/Soffit/Fascia Sheathing: Exterior, Structural I sheathing. 1. Span Rating: Not less than 24/0. 2. Nominal Thickness: Not less than 5/8 inch or as indicated. B. Glass-Mat Gypsum Wall Sheathing: ASTM C Type and Thickness: Regular, 1/2 inch thick, unless otherwise noted. Provide Type X, 5/8 inch thick, where required for thermal rating. C. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 INSTALLATION, GENERAL A. Do not use materials with defects that impair quality of sheathing or pieces that are too small to use with minimum number of joints or optimum joint arrangement. Arrange joints so that pieces do not span between fewer than three support members. B. Cut panels at penetrations, edges, and other obstructions of work; fit tightly against abutting construction, unless otherwise indicated. C. Securely attach to substrate by fastening as indicated, complying with the following: 1. ICC-ES ESR-1539 for power-driven fasteners. 2. Table , "Fastening Schedule," in ICC's "International Building Code." D. Use common wire nails, unless otherwise indicated. Select fasteners of size that will not fully penetrate members where opposite side will be exposed to view or will receive finish materials. Make tight connections. Install fasteners without splitting wood. E. Coordinate wall and roof sheathing installation with flashing and joint-sealant installation so these materials are installed in sequence and manner that prevent exterior moisture from passing through completed assembly. F. Do not bridge building expansion joints; cut and space edges of panels to match spacing of structural support elements. G. Coordinate sheathing installation with installation of materials installed over sheathing so sheathing is not exposed to precipitation or left exposed at end of the workday when rain is forecast. 3.2 WOOD STRUCTURAL PANEL INSTALLATION A. General: Comply with applicable recommendations in APA Form No. E30S, "Engineered Wood Construction Guide," for types of structural-use panels and applications indicated. B. Fastening Methods: Fasten panels as indicated below: 1. Wall and Roof Sheathing: a. Screw to cold-formed metal framing. b. Space panels 1/8 inch apart at edges and ends. 3.3 GYPSUM SHEATHING INSTALLATION A. A. Comply with GA-253 and with manufacturer's written instructions. 1. Fasten gypsum sheathing to cold-formed metal framing with screws. 1. Install boards with a 3/8-inch gap where non-load-bearing construction abuts structural elements. 2. Install boards with a 1/4-inch gap where they abut masonry or similar materials that might retain moisture, to prevent wicking. B. Apply fasteners so heads bear tightly against face of sheathing boards but do not cut into facing SHEATHING

14 C. Vertical Installation: Install board vertical edges centered over studs. Abut ends and edges of each board with those of adjacent boards. Attach boards at perimeter and within field of board to each stud. 1. Space fasteners approximately 8 inches o.c. and set back a minimum of 3/8 inch from edges and ends of boards. 3.4 FOAM-PLASTIC SHEATHING INSTALLATION A. Comply with manufacturer's written instructions. 1. Install in exterior spaces without gaps or voids. Do not compress insulation. a. Fill voids with spray foam insulation. Refer to Division 07 Section Thermal Insulation. 2. Trim sheathing/insulation neatly to fit spaces. 3. Fasten insulation to substrate. Provide base support for the insulation panels as required for the exterior cladding to be installed over panels. Coordinate with the cladding or mason for the attachment requirements over sheathing/insulation. 4. Exposed insulation must be protected from open flame and kept dry at all times. 5. Exterior sheathing/insulation is not intended to be left exposed for extended periods of time in excess of 45 to 60 days without adequate protection. If extended exposure is anticipated all exposed foam surfaces including corners, windows and door openings, should be taped with a compatible waterproof tape. B. Foam-Plastic Wall Sheathing: Install vapor-relief strips or equivalent for permitting escape of moisture vapor that otherwise would be trapped in stud cavity behind sheathing. 3.5 SHEATHING JOINT-AND-PENETRATION TREATMENT A. Seal sheathing joints according to sheathing manufacturer's written instructions. 1. Apply glass-fiber sheathing tape to glass-mat gypsum sheathing board joints, and apply and trowel silicone emulsion sealant to embed entire face of tape in sealant. Apply sealant to exposed fasteners with a trowel so fasteners are completely covered. Seal other penetrations and openings. 2. Apply sheathing tape to joints between foam-plastic sheathing panels and at items penetrating sheathing. Apply at upstanding flashing to overlap both flashing and sheathing. 3.6 PROTECTION A. Protect installed products until finish materials can be applied. B. Cover the top and edges of unfinished roof panel work to protect it from the weather and to prevent accumulation of water in the cores of the panels. 1. Do not leave panels exposed to moisture. Particleboard: ANSI A208.1, Grade M-2, made with binder containing no urea-formaldehyde resin. 2.2 STANDING AND RUNNING TRIM A. Hardwood Standing and Running Trim for Stain or Clear: Shall be Custom grade, conforming to AWI Section 300, unless otherwise noted. 1. Species and Grade: Red Oak Clear; NHLA. a. White Maple at stage area and where indicated. 2. Finger Jointing: Not allowed. 3. Gluing for Width: Not allowed. 4. Veneered Material: Use for lumber trim wider than 6 inches. 5. Face Surface: Surfaced (smooth). 6. Backout or groove backs of flat trim members and kerf backs of other wide flat members, except for members with ends exposed in finished work. B. Locker benches and locker wood tops shall be Custom grade solid red oak conforming to AWI Section 100 and 300, unless otherwise noted. Edge gluing for width shall be permitted using Type 1 glue. Gluing for thickness is not acceptable. 1. Provide countersunk screw attachment to wood grounds 2. Fill screw holes with oak plugs glued in place. 3. Exposed edges to be rounded. 4. 17 2.3 MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS A. Fasteners for Interior Finish Carpentry: Nails, screws, and other anchoring devices of type, size, material, and finish required for application indicated to provide secure attachment, concealed where possible. 1. Where galvanized finish is indicated, provide fasteners and anchorages with hot-dip galvanized coating complying with ASTM A 153. B. Glue: Aliphatic-resin, polyurethane, or resorcinol wood glue recommended by manufacturer for general carpentry use. C. Multipurpose Construction Adhesive: Formulation complying with ASTM D 3498 that is recommended for indicated use by adhesive manufacturer. 2.4 FABRICATION A. Back out or kerf backs of the following members except those with ends exposed in finished work: 1. Interior standing and running trim except shoe and crown molds. B. Ease edges of lumber less than 1 inch in nominal thickness to 1/16-inch radius and edges of lumber 1 inch or more in nominal thickness to 1/8-inch radius. 2.5 FACTORY OR SHOP FINISHING OF INTERIOR WOODWORK A. Quality Standard: Comply with AWI Section 1500 unless otherwise indicated. B. General: Finishing of interior finish carpentry is to be performed at factory or shop as specified in this section. 1. For painted finishes, refer to Division 09 Section Interior Painting for final finishing of installed architectural woodwork and for material and application requirements of prime coats for woodwork not specified to receive final finish in this section. C. Preparations for Finishing: Comply with referenced quality standard for sanding, filling countersunk fasteners, sealing concealed surfaces and similar preparations for finishing of architectural woodwork, as applicable to each unit of work. D. Transparent Finish: Comply with requirements indicated below for grade, finish system, staining, effect, and sheen, with sheen measured on 60-degree gloss meter per ASTM D Grade: Custom 2. Finish System: AWI System 11 - Catalyzed Polyurethane 3. Staining: Match approved sample for color 4. Effect: Open grain 5. Sheen: Semi gloss bright rubbed affects degrees. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Examine substrates, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance. B. Examine finish carpentry materials before installation. Reject materials that are wet, moisture damaged, and mold damaged. C. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. 3.2 PREPARATION A. Clean substrates of projections and substances detrimental to application INTERIOR FINISH CARPENTRY

18 B. Before installing interior finish carpentry, condition materials to average prevailing humidity in installation areas for a minimum of 24 hours. 3.3 INSTALLATION, GENERAL A. Do not use materials that are unsound, warped, improperly treated or finished, inadequately seasoned, or too small to fabricate with proper jointing arrangements. 1. Do not use manufactured units with defective surfaces, sizes, or patterns. B. Install interior finish carpentry level, plumb, true, and aligned with adjacent materials. Use concealed shims where necessary for alignment. 1. Scribe and cut interior finish carpentry to fit adjoining work. Refinish and seal cuts as recommended by manufacturer. 2. Countersink fasteners, fill surface flush, and sand where face fastening is unavoidable. 3. Install to tolerance of 1/8 inch in 96 inches for level and plumb. Install adjoining interior finish carpentry with 1/32-inch maximum offset for flush installation and 1/16-inch maximum offset for reveal installation. 4. Install stairs with no more than 3/16-inch variation between adjacent treads and risers and with no more than 3/8-inch variation between largest and smallest treads and risers within each flight. 5. Coordinate interior finish carpentry with materials and systems in or adjacent to it. Provide cutouts for mechanical and electrical items that penetrate interior finish carpentry. 3.4 STANDING AND RUNNING TRIM INSTALLATION A. Install with minimum number of joints practical, using full-length pieces from maximum lengths of lumber available. Do not use pieces less than 24 inches long, except where necessary. Stagger joints in adjacent and related standing and running trim. Cope at returns and miter at corners to produce tight-fitting joints with full-surface contact throughout length of joint. Use scarf joints for end-to-end joints. Plane backs of casings to provide uniform thickness across joints where necessary for alignment. 1. Match color and grain pattern of trim for transparent finish (stain or clear finish) across joints. 2. Install trim after gypsum board joint finishing operations are completed. 3. Drill pilot holes in hardwood before fastening to prevent splitting. Fasten to prevent movement or warping. Countersink fastener heads on exposed carpentry work and fill holes. B. Locker benches and locker wood tops shall be installed where and as indicated. 3.5 ADJUSTING A. Replace interior finish carpentry that is damaged or does not comply with requirements. Interior finish carpentry may be repaired or refinished if work complies with requirements and shows no evidence of repair or refinishing. Adjust joinery for uniform appearance. 3.6 CLEANING A. Clean interior finish carpentry on exposed and semiexposed surfaces. Touch up factory or shop applied finishes to restore damaged or soiled areas. 3.7 PROTECTION A.
