1 NOVEMBER 2005 Greetings from Australia. I m having a good time with woodturners over here. You can catch up with all my woodturning activities by checking out my blog at The timbers over here are very different from our ones at home. I photographed the flowers and leaves of the silky oak tree, which gives so many turners a bad time in terms of allergic reactions. The Collaboration 2005 conference was a blast and I had a good time playing with wood with Alain Mailland, Graeme Priddle, Mike Lee, Gordon Ward, Vaughn Richmond, Neil Scobie, Stephen Hughes and dozens of other turners, carvers, sculptors and 2-D artists. I m sorry I ll miss the November meeting, but I ll be thinking of you from the Great Barrier Reef. The November meeting date is when I ll be snorkeling on the reef after my last woodturning event over here. This month s meeting will feature simultaneous demonstrations on the making of small projects. I m sure it will all go very well. Don t forget to bring in your noisemakers. I won t be there to award a prize, but I m sure you ll all have a good time listening to the results. The December challenge is for holiday ornaments. I ll see you in December! Just a little bit of what Andi has been up to Andi and friends perched atop a fallen brown barrel eucalyptus tree. Graeme Priddle organized this project where most everyone made a walking stick. Mike Lee turned the collar and I decorated it in a maple leaf motif. COW November Page 1
2 TREASURER S REPORT by Craig Wright I just got back from attending the Turning 2005 symposium that was sponsored by the Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild (OVWG). What a wonderful experience! There were 2½ days of demonstrations by several great turners, including Richard Raffin, J. Paul Fennell, Chris Stott, Jimmy Clewes, John Jordan, Ray Key, and Chris Ramsey. This symposium is held every two years. I strongly suggest that all of you consider attending the next one. You might also consider attending the next AAW symposium, which will be held in June 2006 in Louisville, KY. The memberships of many of our members will be up for renewal in November and December. If you wish, you can renew early so that we can avoid having to send out a reminder notice. Remember to visit our new website at before each monthly meeting for any last-minute information. Even though the website still has many pages that need to be added, there is plenty of interesting information to be enjoyed. If you have any woodturning-related articles that you would like to see on our website, please send them to webmaster@centralohiowoodturners.org. Also remember that the Central Ohio Woodturners is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(C)(3) charitable organization. 6 Editor s Corner by Dan Dapra Recently, newsletter Editor, Dan Dapra took some time to gather history about two very prominent and popular woodworking supply shops in the area. Ruth and Jim Baumgardner as well as Lee and Ron Damon gave Dan a glimpse into their establishments. When you enter the store you begin to get a sense of its importance to Columbus-area woodworkers. Table saws, scroll saws, band saws, drill presses, and work benches dominate the front of the showroom. Directly inside the door is an ever-changing display of items produced by the store s customers: bowls, chip carvings, wooden boxes, marquetry, rolling pins, and goblets; all bear witness to the many talents of local woodworkers. There s a large combination shop and classroom for hands-on classes and demonstrations. Shelves and walls are stocked with an impressive variety of hand tools, hardware, finishing materials, exotic and domestic lumber and turning blocks, and a superb selection of books to satisfy the needs of every woodworking bibliophile. Welcome to Woodcraft, where Jim and Ruth Baumgardner are providing essential goods and services to Central Ohio woodworkers. Jim, a chemical engineer, was a project manager for DuPont when he was sent to Shanghai, China, in When the company canceled the project, Jim came home to Parkersburg, West Virginia, where Sam Ross was starting the process of franchising Woodcraft stores. At the time, Woodcraft was the leading woodworkers store in the United States, and Jim saw an opportunity. I d been interested in woodworking for a long time. I was a cabinetmaker; I also operated a sharpening service. I became involved with turning later. Jim and Ruth acquired their Woodcraft franchise and established their store in Hilliard, on the west side of Columbus, Because we knew that our competitors were both on the east side. Six of Woodcraft s nine employees have been with the store since it opened, an enviable percentage in a field that is typically plagued by a high rate of employee turnover. We trust our people, said Ruth. We hire good people; we have a good incentive program. We want people who know something about woodworking and who are good with customers. Consistent customer service and low turnover are important to us. How does Woodcraft view its relationship with big-box stores? We re friendly competitors. We provide a different quality of service here, and we don t engage in price wars. Our prices on tools are competitive, and we can offer different models of power tools, for example, with accessories that the big-box stores don t have, Jim explained. We had someone come in once who was shopping for a lathe and we let him use one of ours. He turned for quite a while and made a big pile of shavings on the floor, and then told us that he was going to one of the big-box stores to buy the lathe because ours was priced fifteen or twenty dollars higher than theirs. These things happen, he added stoically. Woodcraft s goal is to continue to serve a broad customer base that includes woodworkers of every skill level. Frequent in-house classes, conducted by local and nationally-known woodworkers, attract students from as far as Indiana, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Ruth, who taught kindergarten through eighth grade in Belpre, Ohio, organizes and schedules the classes. In-school demonstrations reach new woodworking enthusiasts, and Rol Bloom is in the shop every Wednesday from 10:00-3:00 to offer advice and help to woodworkers who need a hand with their projects. The store even maintains a referral book to assist people who COW November Page 6
7 Editor s Corner Continued have a project in mind and are looking for a skilled woodworker. In terms of public involvement, Woodcraft participates in Toys for Tots and the Freedom Pen project. The company actively supports Central Ohio Woodturners, Woodworkers of Central Ohio, and the Columbus Chippers. For comprehensive store information, see the company s web site at What else should the public know about Woodcraft? Jim, smiling, is quick to reply. We re here to support the woodworking community in any way that we can. ********** It s been a week since the end of his store s most successful autumn open house. The crowds of woodworkers have carried off their miter saws, their lathes, their jigsaws and router bits, their precious bits of cocobolo and tulipwood, their blades and bullet catches, their hinges, hasps, and other hardware. It s a peaceful evening at Wood Werks, and Ron Damon is a nacreous mood. We could have lost everything but if you take big risks, you can expect big rewards, he said, referring to the company that he and his wife, Lee, founded in Columbus sixteen years ago. I worked for thirty-one years for an insurance company. When a new company took over the firm, I found myself at odds with the way they did business, and I knew that I wouldn t be able to keep working for them. Three and a half years after he left, the company folded. While living in Chicago, Ron had once helped a friend start a store for woodworkers. Now, living in Columbus and frustrated that there were no local sources for woodworkeroriented tools and lumber, he took a leap in the dark, a carefully calculated risk, and created Wood Werks. Our first store occupied 5200 square feet, Ron reflected. We expanded twice, to 9800 square feet. It wasn t enough. We searched for over two years before we found a suitable building. All of the tools and machines in this store are under power, and we had to find a place that had sufficient electrical capacity. This building was on the market for a year; we happened to see it, and bought it two weeks later. At 24,000 square feet, it was big enough, but sometimes we look around in here and wonder where we re going to put everything. The building contains the first independently-owned Rockler store. It contains a service department, a warehouse, an enormous showroom, a room for demonstrating industrial woodworking machinery, and the Wood Werks Academy, a spacious and comfortable classroom. It contains the company s office suites. It almost contains Ron Damon s pride in his company and his employees. The words come in a torrent. Of our twelve employees, two have been with us for fifteen years. Our three outside salesmen cover Columbus, the Cincinnati-Kentucky area, and Cleveland. We consider our people to be part of our family, and employee turnover is extremely low. The mainstays of this company are wood, tools, knowledge, and pleasant people. Customers come from all over the Midwest, and they keep coming back. We see a lot of couples, young people, woodworkers of every ability. Lee, Ron says, Is the most indispensable person in the company. She does it all. Corporate structure? No one at Wood Werks has a title. Everyone knows what needs to be done. Everyone works. A truly astonishing example of the trust that Ron and Lee put in their employees is the fact that seven Wood Werks employees order tools, parts, accessories, and all other merchandise. There is no purchasing agent. It s not really autonomy, Ron was quick to point out. It s part of their jobs. We feel that it helps to keep them in touch with our suppliers, with our COW November Page 7
8 Editor s Corner Continued customers needs, and with the fiscal realities and responsibilities of operating the company. Taped to a computer monitor on a desk behind the sales counter is the fortune from a fortune cookie that reads Instead of worrying and agonizing, move ahead constructively, and Wood Werks has done exactly that. In 2002 the firm won the prestigious Business Integrity Award, which the Better Business Bureau presents each year to a single company in each of four categories based on the size of the company. It was the highlight of my career, Ron said proudly. A customer nominated us to the Better Business Bureau, and they sent a committee to interview us. They looked into our history and our financial background. They required us to submit a list of one hundred customers as references. I don t know how many they interviewed, but they could have talked to all of them. We will probably never know who nominated us, but out of thirty-one companies in our category, we won. Their trophy held pride of place in a showcase under the counter for a couple of years. Where is it now? Well, it s still in the store, but we moved it. We don t want to get complacent about what we ve done. In time, Ron and Lee s son, Todd, who has worked for the company since its inception, will take over ownership of Wood Werks. The three of us set the tone for the way we do business, Ron said. We treat people right and we expect our employees to follow our example. We want that to continue unchanged. We care about our customers. We care about each other, about the woodworking community. We care about our suppliers, about our relationships with competitors, with the many friends we ve made at Wood Werks. That s what we want people to know. We care. All previous contributions have been sent in and names of each individual turner have be posted on the official website. Our Tops for Tots program yielded 267 tops this time. Thanks to all who participated. We still have a couple of openings in Christian Burchard s classes. November 16th will be an all day hands-on turning spheres. These aren t your ordinary spheres either! He somehow offsets them and puts way cool designs on them. Some of them are hollow. Check out his web site. On the 17th, the hands-on session will feature madrone baskets. He will be sending us some of the madrone to play with. These baskets are actually thin hollow vessels that he sometimes scorches the outside of, or dries in a microwave to get unusual shapes. He has also ask that participants bring some works in progress or completed pieces to explore design and form. Christian is an interesting presenter who is entertaining as well as extremely knowledgeable. COW November Page 12
13 (WHAT S UP By BARB CROCKETT- CONT.) Andi will be back from her Australian trip in December and have a slide show and presentation from the land down under. The New Year brings lots more turning adventures for our members. The second weekend of January will be the annual Woodworking Show at the fairground. The club will have a booth again this year and you are encouraged to sign up for a turn to demo your craft. This is a great opportunity to demo alongside other club members in a low pressure situation. See Craig Wright for detail. In addition to our regular Tuesday meeting we will be bringing guest artist Jacques Vesary to Columbus for an all day seminar on the third Saturday of January. This event will be free to the first 75 members who sign up. Jacques visit is being paid for with a portion of our earnings from the sale of our winning collaborative project. The seminar will be held in the new classroom at Woodwerks in Gahanna. The facility only holds 75 persons, so sign up early if you wish to attend. First option will be given to those who worked on the clock. There will probably be at least one day of hand-on classes as well. More details will be available in the December newsletter. Our regular January meeting will be a comparison of the One Way and Kelton coring tools. The February meeting will feature ways to hold stuff on the lathe. If you have any special techniques or home made gadgets and gizmos that you would be willing to share, please let me know. In March Lowell Converse will be back for a session on Segmenting 101 at our Tuesday night meeting. We will also have another guest artist in March. We will have an all-day seminar with Nick Cook as well as some hands-on classes. Nick is a well known production turner. He makes a wide variety of small gift items and generously shares tips for pricing and marketing your work. More information on Nick s visit will be in future newsletters. The May meeting is still on the drawing board. If there is anything you would like to see or anything that you would be interested in demonstrating, please let me know. We have had a request for a meeting featuring different ways to dry wood. This doesn t make for a very interesting live demo since it s not much fun to sit and watch a half-turned bowl soak in a vat of soapy brew or dry in some type of oven. However, I think this would be an excellent newsletter feature. Please me with any techniques that you might use to dry your pieces and/or prevent them from cracking. Include photos (in.jpg format) if possible. I will combine them and turn them into a newsletter article being sure to give each of you full credit for your contribution. Remember, this is YOUR club. Your comments and suggestions are the only way to assure that the needs and interests of our entire membership are being met. Keep the comments coming!
