Figure 3 The Allen No. 2 V-belt Vertical Motor Drive drilling and tapping machines are suitable for production drilling and tapping operations up to %" in steel and within the capacity of No. 2 Morse Taper spindle construction, where frequent speed changes are not required. Either two-rope single speed drive (Fig. 9) or single rope four-speed drive with four step sheaves can be furnished. Standard single speed ball bearing AC motors, either or 1800 RPM are used according to speed range desired. Allen No. 2 V-belt vertical motor drive machines are available in 8" -12, or 15, overhang, one to six spindles. They may be arranged for hand feed, power feed, cam feed and reversing spindle tapping, with or without lead screw. POWER FEED as applied to Allen No. 2 drilling machines has several unusual features. Standard feeds are and.010" per revolution of the spindle. A finer or coarser series of feeds can be furnished instead of standard.

Figure 4 Feeds are selected merely by turning the knurled feed selector dial on the feed change gear box (Fig. 1 and Fig. 7). Feeds are positive and the feed mechanism is protected by a safety shear pin. Feed engagement is thru a toggle friction that is self adjusting for wear. Light pressure on the hand feed lever engages the feed, advances the spindle ahead of the feed if desired and disengages the feed under cut at will. A graduated adjustable stop disengages the feed automatically at desired depth, and spindle returns to starting point. CAM FEED provides, for production jobs, an automatic feed cycle with definite characteristics such as pull-outs for deep hole drilling or dwell for spotfacing and counterboring operations. Each cam cycle is started by a mushroom type momentary contact push button, or by a limit switch on indexing set ups (Fig. 8).
4 ALLEN Allen No. 2 single spindle 12" overhang, Type VTH, hand feed drilling machine equipped for hand controlled reversing spindle tapping (mechanical reverse- non-reversing motor); equipment includes motor driven coolant system and magnetic starter with push button station. Cut shows lead screw unit installed. Reversing Spindle Tapping-Mechanical Reverse MECHANICAL REVERSE, with non-reversing motor, uses a powerful double cone friction that operates without shock. Two distinct types of controls are available. "Semi-Automatic" provides automatic reversal of the spindle by means of an adjustable stop; (Fig. 6). "Hand Controlled" provides forward and reverse control to the spindle by downward and upward pressure on the hand feed lever, with adjustable stop for full depth; (Fig. 5). Lead screw tapping may be performed with semi-automatic- mechanical reverse (Fig. 9) or with hand controlled- mechanical reverse (Fig. 5) by installing lead screw unit consisting of hardened and ground thread lead screw with bronze nut and bracket. Figure 6 Reversing Spindle Tapping-Reversing Motor REVERSING MOTOR TAPPING uses a reversing motor with reversing magnetic contactor and limit switch. Two distinct types of controls are available- "Semi-automatic" provides automatic reversal of the motor and spindle by means of an adjustable stop; provision is made for operating reversing limit switches, when desired, before full depth is reached; (Fig. 2). "Hand Controlled" provides forward and reverse motion to the motor and spindle by downward and upward pressure on the feed lever. Neither Lead Screw Tapping or Power Feed can be furnished with "Hand Controlled" reversing motor controls. Page five

Cut shows motor furnished with flange for plugging relay on lead screw tapping top column. Equipped with motor driven coolant system, also separate ma!gnetic starter and push button for each spindle. Reversing Motor lead screw tapping may be semi-automatic or automatic. A semi-automatic lead screw tapping cycle consists of forward motion, reverse and stop. Cycle is started by pressing mushroom type momentary contact push button (Fig. 7) or by a limit switch on indexing set ups. Automatic lead screw tapping provides continuous "Tap 11 and "Reverse// cycles, tap travel being determined by adjustable stops. If "automatic// controls are furnished, the spindle may be used also for "Semi-automatic// tapping, with or without lead screw, also for hand feed drilling operations. Controls for "Semi-automatic// or "Automatic// lead screw tapping include plugging relay, generally mounted on motor, and suitable contactor panel (Fig. 7). The lead screw unit consists of a hardened and ground thread lead screw, with bronze nut and bracket. Page six

Machine equipped with combination magnetic starter and fusible disconnect switch, with push button station on each spindle. Motor driven coolant system can be furnished on any machine. A tank with large settling and storage compartments is mounted on the base of the machine and is provided with a removable cover for cleaning or refilling. A separate switch with overload protection is provided for the pump motor. Other extra equipment available includes table wear plates, standard T-slot in table, table end supports, built-in work lights, flanged quills for multiple heads, top column raising blocks, special cabinet beds for one or more spindles, multiple heads, index tables, etc., for production set ups.
