2 [leer~man SPINDLEMASTER numerical control This remarkable, multi-tool, multiple-purpose tape controlled machine was designed from the beginning for numerical control and a control designed for this machine. It represents a major advancement to provide low-cost "flexible automation" in the controlled removal of excess stock from a piece part. The basic control of the Spindlemaster is the General Electric Mark CENTURY with the addition of magnetics and certain modifications to extend the capability of the standard package to control new functions. All necessary pushbuttons, including jog buttons, useful when setting up a new job are conveniently located on the front of the machine. Features incorporated in the Spindlemaster to provide maximum output with minimum supervision: Its completely mechanical tool changer, controlled by tape command, automatically changes tools in less than 8.5 seconds. It selects any of 0 tools from a magazine while the table is positioning for the next operation. It is a multiple tool, vertical spindle machine that can drill, tap, ream, mill and bore rapidly and precisely. All three axes, spindle and compound table, are automatically positioned by tape command. Also controlled by tape commands are 18 spindle speeds from 150 to 125 rpm; 79 spindle feeds from 0.5 to 20 inches per minute; spindle and table traverse; and coolant flow turned on only during the cutting portion. Spindlemaster Mechanical Tool Changer The tool magazine is a round disc equipped with pockets which rotates on a center post to present any one of three tools to the machine's spindle. Each tool pocket around the perimeter of the carrier disc is numbered from one through three. When a tool is called for, the magazine rotates in the direction of lesser travel, either clockwise or counterclockwise. As the selected tool approaches the spindle, rotation speed of the magazine decelerates to bring the tool into accurate position beneath the spindle, then stops. A shock bolt is located at the rear of the magazine which locks the magazine in position. The shock bolt is interlocked to prevent the spindle from cycling unless the tool is properly located for pick up. The Spindlemaster establishes a new high for versatility in automatic operation on precision work. 3 LAYOUT DRILLING MACHINES numerical control The Layout Drilling Machine at the left is the standard model having 15" x 0" of table travel and is equipped with the Allen-Bradley, three axes, Numerical Control System and tape controlled speed and feed gear shifting. The table and saddle are driven by lead screws and measuring is accomplished by Farrand scales. Tape also controls spindle travel as well as selection of speeds and feeds. The use of Farrand scales permits repeatable accuracy to ±.000". The standard and the No. 2 Layout Drilling Machines can be furnished with Allen-Bradley, General Electric or Warner and Swasey Numerical Control Systems. Partial specifications are listed below. 4 LAYOUT DRILLING MACHINES The CLEEREMAN Layout Drilling Machines have proved to be the outstandingly versatile machines in their field. There are three generally similar models called the Standard, the No. 2 and the No. 2-A, the last a two-spindle machine. As a standard unit using hardened and ground precision lead screws, the Layout Drilling Machine meets requirements where ultra-precision is not necessary. Thi~ machine has maintained the straightforward approach to simple rugged design which has been an accepted characteristic of all Cleereman Machine Tools. The many manufacturing jobs that do not require tolerances of closer than.001" involving drilling, boring, reaming, tapping, etc. are quickly performed at maximum speeds and feeds. The CLEEREMAN Layout Drilling Machine is also adaptable to the use of End Measuring Rods and /or Job Rods including automatic positioning. The Standard-table size x 6", travel 15" x 0". Ease of set-up, pick-off change gears, broad ranges of speeds, feeds and tap leads make this production type machine ideal for small lot production. This machine is unusual in its simplified design providing extreme rigidity in the heavy structural members. Readily adaptable to special fixturing or multiple drill heads, its variety of uses and applications is limited only to the imagination. Two or more columns can be mounted on a special base and, with the use of rotary type index tables, high production and precision can be attained. Table index and automatic spindle cycle are obtained by depressing a cycle start pushbutton. While the tools are working, the operator removes the finished part and loads another at the loading and unloading station.
