2 Alflw "TIMESAVER" ERTRAM ENGINE LATHE The experience of eighty years devoted to the building of fine machine tools is evident in this latest model Timesaver Engine Lathe. Improvements to this new design include: 18 speed Headstock with antifriction bearings throughout, High Speed Gears with Ground Profiles, Enclosed Motor Drive Arrangement, Heavier Tailstock and other refinements. This latest successor to a worthy line is designed throughout with a generous reserve of strength and power, particular thought being centered on Simplicity, Operating Convenience, Safety, Low-cost Maintenance and Appearance. A study of this outstanding lathe will shou how completely these essentials have been combined. RIGID BED- Bed cast with solid web tying the ways rigidly together and forming sloping chipchute. BED WAYS- Compensating ((V" and flat ways for carriage; separate ((V" guide for tailstock. HEADSTOCK- Clear-Vision headstock fully enclosed, no overhung gears. GEARING- Alloy steel heat treated MAAG gears with ground tooth pro les. SH LIFTS- Shafts are ground and multiple splined from solid. BEARINGS- Spindle and head stock shafts are mounted on precision anti-friction bearings. CARRIAGE- Furnished with power rapid traverse, offset toolslide, chasing dial and single lever feed control. LIPRON--Dne piece double wall; shafts supported at both ends; automatically oiled. FEED CLUTCHES- Fine tooth positive clutche for longitudinal and cross feeds. FEED BO- Direct reading quick change; steel gears flood lubricated. T LIILSTOCK -- Heavy four-bolt type; spindle clamped by double lock pads; rack and pinion for quick positioning. SAFETY- Totally enclosed gears; safety interlocks on carriage; Start-Stop lever at head and saddle. LUBRICdTION- Headstock is flood lubricated by means of a geared pump driven by the constant speed shaft.

3 DESCRIPTION HEADSTOCK - The headstock has eighteen (18) spindle speeds: 4, 5, 6.2, 7.9, 10, 12.5, 17.3, 22, 27.4, 36, 45, 57, 73, 92, 116, 153, 195, and 240 R.P.M. peed changes are affected through sliding gears nose. The carriage is of sturdy and compact design with unusually long bearings on the bed, all four wings have longitudinal T slots. The bridge is deep and wide.

Power rapid traverse is regularly furnished, control being by a single lever which also operates the cross and longitudinal feeds. A safety interlock is provided. The compound rest has large graduated base and the toolslide is offset 30. A threading dial is furnished and an apron reverse for R. and L. H. thread cutting. Double track wipers are fitted at the end of the wings and the lubrication of ways and apron is automatic, a pump being built into the left hand section which forms an oil reservoir; a visible oil level gauge is mounted at the front. The apron is a one-piece box form casting, all gears being supported on both sides. The gears are of steel and MAAG generated form: positive fine tooth clutches are used to engage the feeds. A safety interlock is provided between power feeds and rapid traverse motions, also between the lead-screw half-nuts. 7

8 Bed The bed is of heavy box section and cast with a steel content to provide a wearing surface of great density. Solid webs tie the side walls and cross webs and being inclined permit cuttings to slide to the rear. The headstock end has a projection in rear to provide a full width support for the head, the compartment formed by this projection also serving to house the drive motor. The front way is of the compensating "V" type presenting a surface at right angles to the tool thrust and preventing all tendency of the carriage to climb. The rear way has a "V" guide for tailstock alignment. A tail-brace rack is cast integral with the bed. Heavy box legs form a solid support for the bed, the leg under the headstocl< being designed to form a coolant tank when so required. Quick Claange Peed Box The cut shows the simplicity and convenience of the quick change gear box. It has a direct reading index plate and provides 32 changes of feeds or threads without removal of any gears. An additional 16 feeds or threads are obtainable by change gears mounted on the swing plate at the end of the bed. A hinged cast iron cover is provided for the gear train. Tailstock The tailstock has a 4%" Spindle and is of massiye design with buttress ribbing for additional rigidity. It is clamped to the bed by four locking bolts which are conveniently reached from the front of the Lathe. The Spindle is clamped in the barrel by double lock pads which do not disturb the alignment. Set-onr adjustment and a tail-brace rack pawl are regularly furnished. Tailstock may be positioned on the bed by rack and pinion movement. All gears are of steel with rounded teeth to permit easy engagement, and shafts are mounted on anti-friction bearings. The cover of the box is removable and so designed that chips and dirt are effectively prevented from entering the narrow tumbler slot. Gears are flood lubricated, the bottom of the box forming an oil reservoir. A petcock is furnished at the right hand side to check the correct oil level. 8

9 Motor Drive The Lathe is arranged for Constant Speed Motor Drive only, the initial Drive to the Headstock being by multiple "V" belts. The Motor is mounted in a compartment at the rear of the bed on a hinged base to provide the necessary adjustment for correct belt tension. The main drive pulley is anti-friction mounted and the driving belts enclosed with a cast iron cover. A ven t ilated sheet metal cover is used to enclose th e Motor compa rtment. The push button station is built into the front of the Lathe. 0 }} Taper Attaclament The taper attachment on and sizes has a capacity for turning tapers at one setting up to in length and up to 3 11 on diameter per foot. The attachnlent is provided with a taper gibbed block and the slide is grad uated in degrees at one end, and inches per foot at the other. Coolant System The Coolant Pump is a vertica l centrifuga l one with fractional horsepower motor. The pump is mounted on top of the rear leg which forms the coolant tank. It is complete with sheet meta l pan, piping and fittings.
