1 OSCA Vermculture Compost System 3.0 Constructon Plans: 3.1 General Gudelnes A detaled parts lst for each component of the OSCR compost system appeats n Appendx B, Table B-9. Use wood glue on all contact surfaces. When jonng plywood and 2x2 W ng peces (1 518 x 1 314) use one nch flat head wood screws. When jonng two peces of 2x2 framng pre-drll a plot hole and use two nch sheet mck screws. Wood screws should be used approxmately every 6 nches. Use of a power screw drver wll make assembly a lot easer. As you read the assembly nstructons, refer often to the drawngs. Peces are referred to by sze and locaton. Cut out all the panels from the 518 CDX plywood, labelmg them as you cut each pece. Cut the 2x4s down the center lengthwse. Measure and cut each framg pece one at a tme, otherwse the materal removed n the saw cut wll alter the lengths. In most cases ths s not crtcal but accurate cuts wll help ensure squareness of the bn. Tools: crcular saw hammer power drll straght edge power screw drver or varable speed drll motor Phllps screw drver metal shears: to cut screen hand crosscut saw 1 nch hole saw bt: for vent holes tape measure 1 l2 nch hole saw bt: forvent holes knfe: to cut foam nsulaton copng saw: to cut hole for dran staple gun and l2 nch staples: for screen caulkng tube gun 3.2 OSCR Vermculture Compost Bn Assembly Instructons 1) Begn by attachng the four vertcal framng peces, (2ea & 2ea 6 318), whch support the harvest chamber floor to the sde panels, (36x34 314) algnng them flush wth the corners. 2) Stand the back panel (48x36) and the two sde panels up sde down on a level surface lke a concrete floor and attach the back panel to the sde panels. Offset the screws enterng from adjonng comer panels. 3) Attach all four horzontal framng peces (2ea & 2ea ) whch support the harvest chamber floor, drvng screws through the plywood sdes. The front framng pece can be fastened to the plywood as well, usng a sngle screw on each end.

2 OSCR Vermculture Compost System Carehlly turn the structure rght sde up and secure the harvest chamber floor panel (46 314x34 314) to the horzontal framng peces. Attach the four vertcal framng peces (2ea & 2ea 8 3/8), whch support the reactor chamber floor frame to the plywood panels. Cut a 314 nch strp of 518th~ plywood nches long and anchor to the front edge of the harvest chamber floor. Optonal Heater Rack Bracket: Even f you don't thnk you need the heater you should nstall the bracket frame at ths tme. If you fnd you do want to add the heater rack at a later date t wll be less dffcult. See page Pre-drll plot holes for two nch sheetrock screws by holdng the framng peces n place whle drllng plot holes. Secure the four vertcal peces (2ea 4 & 2 ea 3) takng care to get the matched pars on the proper ends of the bn. The vertcal heght from the ground to the top of the bracket should be roughly equal. Secure the horzontal framng peces (2ea ). Mark wth a pencl or center punch, on the front & back panel and on the front frame pece, the ponts where you wll be drllng holes for the nylon cord. Also mark the poston for the two cross-members, whch must ft n the space between the cord. -. Attach the four horzontal framng oeces (2ea & 2ea ) whch make uo the frame for the reactor chamber floor. Be careful not to put screws n postons, whch wll prevent you from drllng holes for the nylon cord or where you wll mount the cross-members. Attach cross-members (2ea ) n the reactor chamber floor frame usng two sheetrock screws n each end. Attach the four vertcal framng peces ( ) n the comers of the reactor chamber. If they protrude above the edge of plywood trm the excess off before anchorng. Attach the horzontal framng peces (2ea & 2ea ) around the upper edge of the reactor chamber. Install the dran n the harvest chamber floor. Precse locaton of the dran s not necessary, but you do need to get a dran pan under the hole. The center of the dran should be about sx nches from the front and sde, on the low end ofthe chamber. Attach the upper front panel (48x20) to the exstng structure flush wth the top comers of the sde panels. Attach the framng peces (2ea & 2ea 27) to the under sde of the top door panel (36x48). Mount the hnges to the under sde of the top door panel. Cut, fle or chsel a notch about the depth of the hnge plate n the top edge of the pack panel, so the top door panel wll rest upon the edge of the back panel. Attach the framng pece (43) to the lower edge of the harvest chamber door (48x13). Drll vent holes n plywood panels usng a 1" hole saw bt. Drll holes for nylon cord whch forms the base ofthe reactor chamber floor. If you are gong to nstall the sldng vent covers drll the holes for the mountng screws at ths tme. See page Usng pantable caulk, run a bead of sealer along alljonts. Pant the OSCR bn nsde and out wth lght tone exteror pant. Two coats mnmum, Cut nsulaton panels from the one nch polystyrene foam.

3 OSCR Vtrmfculture Compost System Cut 28 each, three nch square patches of fne mesh nylon screen to be used to cover vent holes. Insert foam nsulaton panels n postons then mark where to cut the holes. Remove the foam nsulaton panels and cut or drll 1 nch holes through foam panels. Usng a staple gun and glue, attach screen patches to the nsde surface of the bn, over each vent hole. See page a) If you are gong to nstall the sldng vent covers, nsert the mountng screws from the nsde at ths tme. See page Use glue and nch sheetrock screws to secure nsulaton panels. The panels for the top surface are meant to be removable and should not be secured to anythng. Installng the pourable cement mx around the dran n the harvest chamber floor: Before mxng the cement, have several peces of the scrap 518th~ plywood near by whch can be used spacers. Place some spacer blocks under te bn sothat the end opposte the dran s rased about 3 nches and the front edge s rased about 518 nch. Ths wll cause the pourable cement to run toward the end wth the dran and to the back comer. Before you pour, plug the dran wth paper When you pour, the cement should spread completely across the end of the bn and extend out from the sde wall to about the mddle of the dran. Thread the nylon cord through a hole from the outsde, begnnng on one of the back corners, lacng the cord back and forth untl you ext from the hole on the opposte end of the back panel. At one end, double up the cord and use a cable clamp or te a knot around a screw that won't slp through the hole. Pull the cord back through the holes untl t s tght. Seal the holes wth pantable caulk to prevent mosture from leakng out of the bn. Attach the hnged door panels to the front and top. To get a bug proof seal on the doors nstall plastc neoprene weatherstrp on the door panels. Top and front door latches: Whle applyng enough pressure to create a seal on the weather strp, drll a 5116 hole through the 2x2s for the 1/4:20x4 112 bolts whch wll be used to secure the doors. If securty s a problem use metal hasps. See page Mount the ndoorloutdoor thermometer on the outer surface of the OSCR compost bn so that t wll not receve drect sunlght, drll a hole n the sde of the bn and feed the outdoor probe nto the nsde of the reactor chamber.

14 OSCI Vermculture Compost System 33 Optonal, hut hghly recommended, Heater Rack Assembly Instructons 1) Cut framng peces for rack framework as per drawngs on page ) From the scrap 518th~ plywood cut 4 peces 14 nches x 2 112nches. These wll be used as comer braces on the top sde of the frame. 3) From the scrap 518th~ plywood cut one nch wde strps, wth two shps measurng nches and two strps measurng nches. They do not need to be all n one pece but should equal the lengths gven. 4) Cut the 112 nch hardware cloth to sze. (40 ll2 x ) Then cut a one nch square from each comer and make a 90' fold wth the remanng one nch wde secton of the screen, along each of the four edges. 5) Attach the 2x2 framng peces (2ea & 2ea ) together, offsettng the ends as shown n the dagram, wth glue and a sngle two nch sheetrock screw on each comer. Remember to drll a plot hole for the sheetrock screws. 6) Set the hardware cloth down nsde the frame wth the folded edges pontng up. Secure the folded edges to the nsde of the frame wth the one nch strps of 518th~ plywood and wood screws. The plywood strps should be about three nches from the comers of the 2x2 frame and flush wth the top surface of the frame as you are workng wth t. The hardware cloth should be slghtly rased above the lower edge of the fame. It may sag n the mddle later on but, on the two nch ends t s mportant to have a smooth surface so the rack wll easly slde n and out of the harvest chamber. 7) Lay the sol heat cable out on the hardware cloth as per the drawng. Secure t to the hardware cloth wth 4 nch plastc cable tes. When securng the heat cable, keep n mnd that the metal n the hardware cloth helps to dstrbute the heat away from the cable so you want as much contact between the cable and screen as possble. 8) Lay the 14 x 2 ll? strps of plywood dagonally across the comers, as shown n the drawngs, so the nner most edge of the strp touches the outer edge of the frame. Mark a lne along the part that hangs over, cut ths pece off and secure the strp n place wth glue and wood screws. 9) You need to cut a notch n the front of the OSCR bn for the heat cable power cord, n order to be able to close the door. The best place for the notch s rght at the pont where the harvest chamber door hnges to the front panel, on the sde where the power cable emerges. A 112 nch notch wll work well.

17 OSCR Vermlculture Compost System 3.4 Optonal Castngs Screen Assembly Instructons 1) Cut the 2x2 framng peces as shown n the drawng on page ) Cut the 518th~ plywood as per the drawng on page ) Cut the 118th to 5164th~ screen to 29 x 29 nches. 4) Attach the 2x2 framework together usng glue and a sngle two nch sheet rock screw at each corner. 5) Lay the screen squarely over the openng n the 2x2 frame and secure t usng lots of staples Use a hammer to drve the staples flush nto the 2x2 frame. 8) Lay the plywood on the 2x2 frame so the screen s between the plywood and the 2x2s. Secure the plywood to the 2x2 frame usng wood screws.
