Frog Theme for Preschool A Frog Theme! We love frogs, tadpoles and anything else that is slimy, jumps around and likes to play in water and mud! Here are some great activities for your preschool classroom! Using the Standards Conversion Chart Type in each of your program s equivalent standards next to my standard. Save to your computer. Refer to this chart each time you use a theme from Preschool Cubby Using the Weekly and Daily Planning Forms In the weekly planning form, ALL of the boxes are editable! Simply print as they are OR move activities to the days you want them or replace activities with your own! You ll find my standards listed under each activity. This is where you will enter YOUR program s standards (that you added to the Conversion Chart) 1. Refer to the conversion chart you completed and look up my Standard Letter/Number. 2. Replace that letter and number with YOUR program s equivalent that you typed into the Conversion Chart. 3. Print! The Weekly AND Daily Planning forms are both 100% editable so you can move the activities to the days you want to do them or even replace them with your own activities! (If you do that-be sure to change them on the daily planning forms as well AND replace the standards in that box with the correct standards for the activity you have replaced mine with!) NOTE: The blue areas will NOT print blue, don t worry! Those areas are the editable areas. They will print with a white background when you print! 1

MONDAY Frog Theme You ll Need: 5 Green and Speckled Frogs book by Priscilla Burris; brown or white paper lunch bags, paint, white and black paper scraps, scissors and glue; celery, cream cheese, green peppers, kiwi, plastic knives; Frog Life Cycle-use some of the Game Pattern life cycle cards from this packet; Five Green and Speckled Frogs Song poster from this packet; lily pad shaped paper, tape, music; Frogs by Gail Gibbons Circle 5 Green and Speckled Frogs - Act It Out! Sing this song several times with the children while showing the pages. Then choose 5 children to act it out while the rest of the children sing along. Continue until all the children have had a turn being one of the frogs! 3,4,10,12,34 Art Paper Bag Puppets The children paint the bags the color they'd like their frogs. The children cut out, as best they can, large white circles and then 2 smaller black circles (for the eyes and pupils) and glue them on the folded bottom part that will be the face. Also, provide red/pink paper for them to cut out a tongue. Curl it by wrapping it around a pencil to make it curl up. They can use scraps to cut out arms. 3,23,24,27,29,36 Math/Manipulative Science Music & Movement Green and Speckled Frog Log Snack Have the children help you wash the celery and cut the ends off. They then spread soft cream cheese into celery "logs" Have the children help to cut pieces of green peppers, kiwi, or other green food and place 5 frogs on their logs! 13,16,17,23, 31,35 Frog Life Cycle Use these cards to place around your science area. As they observe the tadpoles (tomorrow s activity), encourage them to look for the changes in the tadpoles that they see in the cards! 1,13-15,20-24,27-30,43 Five Green and Speckled Frogs Song Sing this song while acting out the parts. 3,4,10,12,34 Gross Motor Lily Pad Hopping In advance, cut out many large lily pad shapes from green paper. Tape to the carpet or floor. The children hop from pad to pad as the music plays. They stop and squat and "catch a fly" to eat when the music stops. EXTENSION: Program each lily pad with a number or letter and when the music stops, they call out the letter or number on their lily pad. 3,10,11,25,34,42 Story Time Frogs by Gail Gibbons 1,6,38-40,44 Preschool Cubby 3

TUESDAY Frog Theme You ll Need: Circle Art Real (or plastic) amphibians; non-fiction frog books; sponges, scissors, paint, sponge brushes; Path game template in this packet; fish tank, pond water, rocks, tadpoles, tadpole food; Kids in Action CD by Greg & Steve; large frog shape on paper, paper flies, two-sided tape; Froggy Gets Dressed by Jonathan London Amphibians Bring real or plastic amphibians to circle. Show and pass around each one. Ask the children if they know what they are? (Bring frogs, toads, newts, salamanders). Name each one with the children. Tell them that these are all amphibians! Amphibians are cold blooded; live on water AND on land; do NOT have scales; lay eggs; and many go through---new word for them: metamorphosis! Like frogs! Show the children pictures and read from a non-fiction frog book. 5-7,11,19,30,36-40,44,45 Sponge Painting Cut sponges into frog feet shapes and frog sphere shapes for bodies for sponge painting. Provide glue and googly eyes! Also, provide small, large and sponge brushes. 3,23,24,27,29,36 Math/Manipulative Frog Path Game Make your own path game! Don't be intimidated! It does not have to be fancy! Simply have a start and end space on a large piece of construction paper or use the template in this packet! Add stickers to get from start to finish. They could be flies, drawings of rocks or actual rocks glued to the paper! Give the children plastic frogs to use a player pieces. Give them a homemade or commercial die (I like homemade because then I can program it to have only the numbers we have been working on!). Let the children make up their own rules on how to play! I always love writing down their ideas on how to play a game to send home with families! EXTENSION: Provide extra materials for your preschoolers to make their own individual games to bring home! 13,14,17,20,21,24-26,30 Science Watch Them Grow! You can order tadpoles somewhere online! One year we found ours swimming in my sister-in-law s pool! The pool cover had fallen in and frogs had their babies there! Observe them as they grow! Extension: Make journals for the children to document the tadpole's growth. It is pretty amazing to watch! They develop 2 feet, then 2 more, then their tail shrinks and they are frogs! Did you know that tadpoles store food in their tails to eat until they develop into frogs and can make it to land to eat? Provide many non-fiction frog books in the science area! Take a field trip to free the frogs at a local pond. 1,13-15,20-24,27-30,43 Music & Movement Animal Actions 1 & 2 This is a great CD I highly suggest you invest in! Or, request an interlibrary loan of it from your library. The Animal Actions track has the children act out many animals and other movements. One of them is Leap Like a Frog. On this CD is Animal Actions 1 and Animal Actions 2. Use these throughout the week! 3,4,10,12,34 Gross Motor Pin the Fly on the Frog's Tongue! In advance make and hang a large frog (laminate). Make some flies that have two-sided tape on the back. The children (blindfolded if they are comfortable with that), try to place the fly on the tongue of the frog! VARIATION: Place Velcro on the frog and on the backs of plastic flies to toss onto the frog. EXTENSION: When done, rather than talk about "who missed and who didn't", lead the children in some observational and math questions: How many flies are ON the frog's tongue? How many are UNDER? OVER? How many are on the frog's eye? 3,10,11,25,34,42 Story Time Froggy Gets Dressed by Jonathan London 1,6,38-40,44 Preschool Cubby 4

WEDNESDAY Frog Theme You ll Need: Painters tape, rulers, measuring tape, chart paper, markers; paint, marbles, shallow tray, eye droppers/pipettes, water, paper, brushes; Frog Life Cycle Seriation Folder Game in this packet; party blowers (the ones that unravel when you blow into them), Velcro, paper or plastic flies; 2 sets of lily pads from Lily Pad Count game in this packet, music; large pieces of paper or carpet squares; Jump, Frog, Jump! by Robert Kalan Circle Jump Frog and Measure Tape a line on the floor. Each child stands on the line and jumps as far as they can. Mark where they land with another piece of tape. The children measure how far they jumped using rulers, tape measures or even classroom items (i.e. How many blocks far did you jump?). The children then print their name on chart paper and the number (how many inches, feet or how many blocks) that represents how far they jumped next to their name. 6,8,12,20,21,23,30 Art Marble Paint Frogs The children place their paper in the tray and drop watered down paint on the paper. The place a few marbles in the paint and shake the box side to side, front to back, etc. They remove the paper and bring it to the art table to use paint brushes to embellish their painting into a frog scene of their choosing. I do not precut paper into shapes. Doing so limits children s creativity. They may want to paint about the pond, or a lily pad, or not about a frog at all! 1,13,14,22,27,31,35 Math/Manipulative Frog Life Cycle Seriation Folder Game 2,11,20,21,26,27,29,30, Science Fly Catchers We stuck Velcro on the ends of the party blowers and then the opposite side of the Velcro to paper flies that we laminated (I have also seen plastic flies used but our children had a touch time catching them with the party blowers). The children blow the party blower and then, as the blower is extended, touch a paper fly to catch. It takes some practice but is loads of fun! VARIATION: If this is too difficult for your children, try Fly Blowing! Provide straws and have the children try to blow the plastic or paper flies across a table 6,11,27-30 Music & Movement Musical Lily Pads! In advance, print, cut and laminate 2 sets of the lily pads in the Lily Pad Count Activity Mat in this packet. Place one set on chairs. Pass the other set out to the children. Play music. The children, holding their lily pad, dance around the chairs. When the music stops, they must find the matching lily pad and sit on that chair. Play again by distributing a different lily pad to each child. 3,10,11,25,34 Gross Motor Fly Hopping Draw flies on the papers or place plastic flies on carpet squares. The children hop over the paper or squares to hop over the flies. 3,10,11,25,34,42 Story Time Jump, Frog, Jump! by Robert Kalan 1,6,38-40,44 Preschool Cubby 5

THURSDAY Frog Theme You ll Need: Large bowls, paper towel, sponges, water, plastic frog; markers, colored pencils, crayons, glitter glue sticks; Lily Pad Count Activity Mat from this packet, playdough; bowls, sponges, water, pipettes, carpet squares (or towels), paper towels; Kids in Action CD by Greg & Steve; The Wide-Mouthed Frog by Jonathan Lambert Circle How Frogs Drink Discuss how frogs drink. They do not drink through their mouths or with their tongues. The absorb water through their skin. Discuss what they think absorb means. Give each small group of children a large bowl (for 3 children). Give each group one paper towel and have them rip it into 3 pieces (one for each child). What will happen if they put the paper towel into the water? Listen to their predictions and then try it! Discuss results. Remove paper towels. Now give each child a sponge. Ask the same question. They place their sponges into their bowls and observe. The sponge will absorb the water. Ask where the water went? Discuss how frogs absorb water. 6,11,27-30 Art Green Color Collage Frogs Let the children create their own frogs! 3,23,24,27,29,31,36 Math/Manipulative Lily Pad Count Activity Mat Needed: activity mats from this packet, playdough This activity will help children with their 1-1 correspondence, rational counting and eye-hand coordination! 13,14,20,21,23-26,30,35 Science Absorption Investigations Continue absorption exploration from this morning s Circle Time activity. Let the children explore how different items absorb water. Our preschooler s favorite is using carpet squares (or towels) and using pipettes to drop water onto it. They then place a sheet of paper towel over the carpet square or towel and press it with their hands. They see how the water is first absorbed by the carpet square and then reabsorbed by the paper towel, and they see they hand prints from pressing on the paper towel! 6,11,27-30 Music & Movement Animal Actions 1 & 2 This is a great CD I highly suggest you invest in! Or, request an interlibrary loan of it from your library. The Animal Actions track has the children act out many animals and other movements. One of them is Leap Like a Frog. On this CD is Animal Actions 1 and Animal Actions 2. Use these throughout the week! 3,4,10,12,34 Gross Motor Tadpole, Tadpole, FROG! Play this version of Duck, Duck Goose! They need to hop like frogs instead of run around the circle! 3,7,10,12,35 Story Time The Wide-Mouthed Frog by Jonathan Lambert 1,6,38-40,44 Preschool Cubby 6

FRIDAY Frog Theme You ll Need: Stuffed animal frog, green paper, plastic flies or pompoms; plastic frogs, paper, paint, clothespins, yarn; lime recipe in this packet, plastic frogs; bowls, rocks, leaves, ferns, grass, plastic frogs, water; 2 sets of lily pads from Lily Pad Count game in this packet, music; dice; It's Mine! by Leo Lionni Circle Feed the Frog Discuss what frogs eat (they are carnivores and many eat bugs). Give each child a few plastic flies or a handful of pompoms. Place the stuffed frog in the middle of circle on a green piece of paper (a lily pad). Each child takes turn tossing the flies or pompoms to the frog, counting each one as they toss. Count the total number of flies or pompoms together when done to practice rote and rational counting. How many are ON the lily pad? How many are not on the lily pad? 6,9,13,14,20,21,30 Art Frog Hop Painting Tie yarn around plastic frogs. Have the children clip a clothespin to the other end of the yarn. Holding the clothespin, they dip the frog into the paint and make the frog hop all over the paper! 1,13,14,22,27,31,35 Math/Manipulative Green and Speckled Slime Make the slime with the children. Add plastic frogs for fun! 13,14,23,26-30,35,42,43 Science It s MINE! Island Creation The children create their own island (based on the It s Mine! book by Leo Lionni) by placing items in a bowl. Encourage them to act out the story using their islands! 6,11,27-30, 37,40 Music & Movement Musical Lily Pads! 3,10,11,25,34 Gross Motor Hop Counting The children roll the dice, count the dots and then hop the corresponding number of times. 3,10,11,20,21,25,34,42 Story Time It's Mine! by Leo Lionni 1,6,38-40,44 Preschool Cubby 7

Frog Path Game Make your own path game! 13 Lily Pad Count Activity Mat Directions: Print and laminate the lily pad, frogs and number cards from the following pages. The children choose a number card and place the corresponding number of frogs on the lily pad. VARIATION 1: Provide playdough and have the children make snakes out of playdough and cut the snake shapes into pieces using scissors. They use these frogs instead of the picture card frogs. VARIATION 2: Provide dry erase markers for children to draw frogs on the lily pads. EXTENSION: To make this activity self-correcting: Before you laminate the number cards, draw in the corresponding number of dots on the back of each number square so the children can count the dots. This will help the children to practice rational counting (by counting the dots); 1-1 correspondence by placing a frog on each dot and number recognition by associated the number of dots they counted with the printed numeral. You ll find blackline masters of the lily pad and frogs in case you want to color them yourself using different patterns. 13

Song Card & Song Poster How to use: Print and laminate the song card below (it is 5 X 3 ). Place in a can or box with other cards of songs your children love! In transitional times (waiting to go outside or wash hands, etc.), pull out your song box or song can (I use a decorated coffee can!). Shuffle the cards in your hands saying Shuffle, shuffle, shuffle and your children yell STOP! When they yell stop, whichever card is on top is the one you sing! The kids LOVE this! Each month you ll receive one of these cards that correspond with the song poster for the month to add to your Song Card Collection! On the next page, you ll find the Song Poster!
