3 Session Plan 10 Materials Preparation Welcome Preparation Gather name cards. Reading Preparation Prepare core storybook Max s Dragon Shirt according to the appropriate read strategy. Circle Time Preparation 1) Five Green and Speckled Frogs : Gather song chart and practice with Corps members. Gather flannel for flannel board (found at craft stores). Flannel can be attached to a hard surface such as an easel during session, poster or foam board. Make flannel board pieces for: 5 green speckled frogs, 1 brown speckled log, 1 blue pool, several black bugs by cutting out shapes with felt (found at craft stores). Verse 1: Five green and speckled frogs Sat on a speckled log, Eating some most delicious bugs. (Yum, yum!) One jumped into the pool, Where it was nice and cool. Then there were four green and speckled frogs. (Glub, glub!) Verse 2: Four green and speckled frogs... Verse 3: Three green and speckled frogs... Verse 4: Two green and speckled frogs... Verse 5: One green and speckled frog Sat on a speckled log, Eating some most delicious bugs. (Yum, yum!) One jumped into the pool, Where it was nice and cool. Then there were no green and speckled frogs. (Glub, glub!) 2) Guess What Word I m Saying (and Max s Dragon Shirt): Gather materials; Practice saying the vocabulary words as they are outlined in Session Plan 10. 3) Alphabet Memory Pocket Chart Game: Gather Alphabet Memory Pocket Chart; Gather name sticks and brown paper bag, bucket, or basket for turn-taking strategy. Select 6-8 names for the first implementation. Keep track of which names were chosen in the first implementation and remove them prior to the second implementation. Select 6-8 different names for the second implementation; Gather one set of double sided uppercase and lowercase letter cards made during Session Plan 5. Place the set of lowercase letter cards in the pocket chart and keep the uppercase set for participating children. 4) Ten Little Fingers : Gather Poetry Poster; Practice the poem ahead of time (see Session Plan 1 Materials Packet). For Introduction of Center Time Activities Gather objects to use when introducing available Center Time activities in trays or shoe boxes. Prepare and practice introducing all activities and demonstrating 1-2 activities. Create a chart displaying the names of the designated small groups of children who will meet together for Let s Find Out About It.

4 Center Time Preparation Let s Find Out About It: Color Fading From Exposure to Light Note: Make sure to have prepped two TL demonstration sets at least a week prior to give time for fading. Create paper fading samples by cutting out shapes (squares or circles) from tagboard or poster board and paper clipping them to a piece of dark construction paper (make one set for each Let s Find Out About It group). Leave sets exposed to light for at least a week. Be sure to use construction paper that will fade. Some construction paper is made to resist fading. Place another piece of the same size and color construction paper in an envelope to protect it from light. It will be your comparison piece. Cut out shapes from tagboard or poster board for children to use on day of implementation (at least two shapes per child). Gather remaining materials. Note: Since the demonstration sets need to be prepped during the week of Session Plan 9, it may be easier to cut out all shapes during that time. Writing: Making Greeting Cards Cut construction paper into halves; then fold in half to make cards. Place a variety of cards on a tray. Print out several copies of 4-5 captions (e.g., I Love You, Be Mine, Be My Valentine, Happy Valentine s Day ), and trim them to size. Cut hearts out of construction paper. Gather remaining materials. Note: If your activity occurs significantly before or after Valentine s Day, you will need to support children to create any kind of greeting card they are interested in making. If this is the case, you may want to have other colors and captions available. Arrange the rest of the materials on trays/other containers. Books: Exploring Books Gather session library books. Puzzles and Manipulatives: Color and Shape Bingo Create Color and Shape Bingo boards and cards (see below). Gather materials to use as Bingo markers. Dramatic Play: Sorting Clothes for Wash Day Gather play materials. Art: Making Dragon Shirt Paintings Cut green construction paper into t-shirt shapes (one per child). Gather remaining materials.

5 Session Plan 10: Looking Ahead and Color and Shape Bingo Looking Ahead Preparation In the Dramatic Play activity for Session Plan 12, you will need to gather empty fruit flavored yogurt containers and ice cream containers. Color and Shape Bingo Boards and Cards Materials Directions Tagboard for bingo boards Index cards or tagboard for bingo 1) Print two sets of the bingo board templates (below). One set will be used as the bingo boards, the other as bingo cards. cards Attached templates 2) Use a variety of colors to color in the shapes on the bingo boards (do not repeat the colors on the same board.) Scissors Glue tubes 3) Color in the second set. You should have a card for each shape in each color to match the colored shapes on the bingo boards. Small objects to use as chips (buttons, cut up tagboard) 4) Trim each bingo board and glue to tagboard. Use scissors to cut around the outer edge to trim tagboard to the size of the board. Markers or crayons (9 different colors) Laminating machine or clear 5) Glue the bingo cards to tagboard. Use scissors to cut out each individual card. If using index cards, cut individual bingo cards out first, then glue to individual index cards. adhesive (optional) 6) Laminate the cards and boards when dry (if possible). *Note: Laminating the bingo boards will make them more durable and able to withstand more handling by the children for longer, as this material will be used again during later sessions. *Note: If you have the capability to print directly on to cardstock you can eliminate the gluing in steps 4 and 5. 7) Gather small objects to use as bingo markers, such as buttons. You can also cut tagboard into pieces big enough to cover the shapes on the bingo boards to use as markers.
