2 Lacing Cards Children love lacing cards. You have the option of printing up color or b & w cards to color yourself. You can print up the color lacing cards, cut out on the dotted line, laminate, and punch holes around the card using a hole punch. Give the children lacing strings, yarn or shoe laces to lace the cards. The b & w set can also be used as an additional craft for the children. Give each child one of the cards, have them color and cut out. Have an adult punch holes, and they can lace using the above options of string. 27 Words That Begin With I Book Print out the following pages to make a "Words That Start with I" book, an early reader book for young readers about the letter I. There are two rectangular book pages on each printed page. Have the children cut each page in half along the dotted line. Staple the pages together at the left of the page, then read the book, color the pages, and practice writing the letter I or the words.

33 Recognizing the Letter I Introduce the letter I to the children by showing them the written word Ice Cream and helping them to see that it begins with a I. Cut a large Ice Cream shape out of paper and write the letter I on it. 50 Favorite Flavor Voting On paper plates glue construction paper ice cream cones... have 3 or 4... vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, blueberry, for example...give each child a pinch type clothes pin (we call them voting sticks) and invite them to clip their "voting stick" on their favorite flavor of ice cream. Ice Cream Cone - triple scoop Make an ice cream cone with a child's handprint. Have the child trace/cut his/her handprint out on three pieces of paper --depending on what flavor of ice cream he/she likes. Then he/she can glue these overlapping and upside down on to a brown ice cream cone-shaped pattern. 51 Freezer Bag Fun: Give each child a zip-lock baggie to which they added miscellaneous classroom manipulative (animals, plastic letters, lego blocks) and glitter. Fill the bags with water and freeze them. When the bags are frozen, play the "I Spy with My Little Eye" game. For example, a color is called and the children can look to see if they can "spy" an item in the baggies that was that color. Ice Castles: Fill castle-shaped sand buckets with water and freeze them in the freezer. The next day, placed them in a large shallow roasting pan and provided the children with eye droppers and liquid watercolors (blue and red) to which salt had been added. It s fine motor practicing as the children work the eyedroppers, and the color mixing is great science as the water in the pan became purple. 52 Make Inchworms Cut a cardboard egg carton in half lengthwise. Give one half to each child. Paint the egg carton with green tempera paint and allow to dry. Cut the sections apart and punch a small hole in the top of the each section; Thread a length of string, yarn or ribbon thru each egg section, knotting before adding the next one. Leave a couple of inches of string between each section before knotting. Add pipe cleaner antennae and google eyes to the front section. Other decorations may be added using stickers, buttons, felt or tissue or construction paper. Icicle Game Have the children pretend to be icicles. Appoint a child to be the sun. When she touches an "icicle" the child pretends to "melt" and fall to the floor. Take turns so that all the children have a turn at being the sun. Finger Print Insects Have the children dip their finger in a bit of tempera paint or an ink pad to create insect bodies.
