General notes: It is best to make the cards with only a few images, no words and to have images on one side of the card (front) and none on the other side (back). It is preferable to have the image side of the card completely covered rather than leave open spaces. Using backgrounds can make dramatic differences in the overall "energy" of the card. STEP 1: Gather your supplies, including the pre-cut 5 x 8 inch template (see attached file). You may want to keep everything in a box, cloth bag or basket for easy access when you're ready to make cards. STEP 2: Choose at least two images that attract you and seem to belong together. Generally these will be selected intuitively without a specific theme or card in mind. Initially, you may want to choose more images; if you don't use them for this card, you can file the extras aside for use at another time. - 1-

STEP 3: Cutting out your images: Here, you begin to select images you'll use. With experience, you'll be able to "see" the specific images you want, even in the midst of a page with multiple images and backgrounds. STEP 3A: Initially, clip loosely around each image to clear away any additional imagery you don't want. STEP 3B: Now, cut more closely around the specific images (i.e. people, animals, buildings, etc.). Using small, sharp scissors makes this easier and gives you great detail. (Note that I added the trees for background from an earlier image I'd already cut out.) - 2-

STEP 4: Composing your card: This is one of the most creative aspects of making your SoulCollage cards. Have fun while you move the images around without expectation! Start with whatever imagery you are drawn to (i.e. background or primary image) and then build the rest of the card around that. Be flexible and go with what feels right at the time. STEP 4A: Use the pre-cut 5 x 8 frame as the template. Move images around beneath the frame to see what fits, which images you want to use, which ones you want to lay aside (to use another time perhaps) and how you want them placed. Experiment with different views (i.e. landscape & portrait). When you move images around, remember they can be placed at an angle, layered one atop the other and in different places on the card (top, bottom, left, right). If you notice a small space that needs to be covered, check to see if you can use any excess material from one of your trimmed images. STEP 4B: Once you know your anticipated layout, remove the smaller images, lay the blank SoulCollage card & the template over the background image (if it completely covers the card). Mark the edges, then trim the background image a bit over the size of the card to assure it covers the card completely. (Note: Backgrounds can also be done in layers of smaller images, in which case you'd lay them across the card, glue each one individually and then rim the excess.) - 3-

STEP 5: Gluing: Typically, an archival quality glue stick is the easiest to use and works quite well. The sticks come in various sizes; the larger size works best when gluing large surfaces (i.e. the card itself or full sheets for backgrounds). Several brands offer glue that appears purple or blue when first applied and then becomes clear. This helps to identify where you have already glued. Other options include cement glue in a tube and "Yes" glue, which comes in a jar and is spread on with a bristle or sponge brush. Tip: Go to a craft or scrapbooking store to see a variety of glues. If you experiment, you'll find a product that works right for you, depending on the project and the paper used. Begin by placing your card and/or image(s) on a page of an old magazine, catalogue or phone book to protect the table surface. Spread a good amount of glue over your images and/or card, being sure to cover the edges of the card completely. Place your image on the card, press lightly initially to be sure you have it smooth and that it is in place. Then press down more firmly with your fingers, moving from the center out toward the edges. To secure the images, use a brayer, your elbow or an old credit card over waxed paper. Always move in a smooth flow from center to edge. - 4-

HOW TO MAKE SOULCOLLAGE CARDS STEP 5A: Gluing background: Backgrounds will often be a single large image that covers the full size of the card. If this is the case, it is important to have them smooth and even before you apply your primary and supporting images. Backgrounds can also be smaller images, laid down in layers, one image on top of another. In either case, once the background imagery is in place, you can turn the card over and trim any excess with a craft Exacto knife (on a self-healing cutting board) or with a pair of scissors. Copyright Rae Hight, Moxie Consultation,

STEP 5B: Gluing primary and supporting images: Once your background is secured, begin placing your primary and supporting images (often in layers). Again, because this is an intuitive and creative process, you may choose a different layout than when you started. You might even add another image that was not in your original selections. (Note: In the completed card, red & yellow ferns have been added.) - 6-

YOUR FINISHED SOULCOLLAGE CARD: Congratulations! You have just created a precious gift for yourself. This card, with the images chosen by your intuitive mind, heart and soul is now available for you anytime you choose. The images can represent allies, friends, guides and even challengers. As you look over your SoulCollage card, notice what image grabs your attention the most. Allow this to occur intuitively. Recognize that each time you look at this card, you might be drawn to a different image, one that your heart and soul need to communicate with at that time. Feel free to become acquainted with this presence by asking, "Who are you?" Then imagine that you are that being and respond with, " I am one who..." or "I am the one who..." As you create more SoulCollage cards and build your personal deck, you will add new understanding and depth to your life through the process of "Readings" (see separate handout). - 7-

PROTECTING YOUR SOULCOLLAGE CARD(S): Most people do not laminate or cover their SoulCollage cards with products such as Modge Podge. Although not necessary, your cards can be protected by placing them in archival quality plastic "Clear Bags." These sheaths have reseal-able adhesive strips on top (or on one side) which can be folded over the card, adhering to the back side of the bag. After placing your card into the bag, peel off the adhesive strip, fold the flap over and press it closed. You can also trim the flap at the card level to leave the top/side of the bag open. The bags come in sizes that fit the cards (5.25 x 8) and can be purchased through: and CARD STORAGE: Your SoulCollage Cards can be stored any place that works for you (i.e. a special box, a drawer, even a sewing or other type of basket). If you keep them in a location where they are easily accessible, you will have them readily available for readings or just for the enjoyment of seeing them. Many people pull a card or two at random on a daily basis and keep it/them on their altar, computer stand, etc. for inspiration throughout the day. - 8-
