Introduction Thank you for joining in on this training on Scrivener! The man in the picture above is named Joseph Michael, and he is known as the Scrivener Coach online because what he has been doing for the last couple of years is helping people to master Scrivener in order to help accelerate their writing career. Outside of the Scrivener world, Joseph is an everyday guy. He s a husband, father, and entrepreneur. In the screenshot below, you ll find a recent picture of Joseph and his beautiful family. Joseph said that they had to take about 100 pictures before they could get one where his little son was nicely propped up on his wife s lap. Right afterwards, he catapulted down. Anyway, this is just a little bit about his personal life. On the business side of things, his focus is helping people become world-class writers by helping them master Scrivener. He not only wants people to master it, he wants them to master it fast. Nowadays, it s common for people to have a million things on their plate, and so the last thing you need is another thing piled on like learning complicated software. Joseph understands that.

According to Joseph, he has gotten to work with all kinds of writers that work within all different kinds of genres. This includes everything from published authors, novelists, and even professional bloggers. He s worked with people who were just starting out as well as New York Times bestselling authors. Just to name a few, he s worked with Jeff Goins, Joanna Penn, and Michael Hyatt. He says that he s really had a blast with all of it. Today, Joseph would like to add you to the list of authors he has been able to help. There are a few things that need to be covered before the lesson can really begin. First of all, you don t need to have Scrivener open right now. It may be wisest for you just to follow along and learn as much as you can. If you don t have it yet, it s highly recommended that you go ahead and download it because there is a free 30 day trial available right now. That s 30 calendar days of actual use, and you can take advantage of this by visiting LiteratureAndLatte.com. If you can t remember this URL, you can simply Google Scrivener Software and you ll be able to find the site pretty quickly.

What s the Big Deal Anyway? Have you guys heard the buzz? It s been called the greatest thing to happen to writers since the typewriter. You can probably imagine what a great idea this was when it came along. That s a pretty big deal to hear that it s being compared to something as revolutionary as the typewriter, right? In communities of writers, you ll hear about it everywhere. People are really obsessed with Scrivener. Joseph will often go on what he calls a Scrivener obsession tweet search. He says that it s amazing what you ll find people saying when they talk about this software. You don t have to search very long or hard to find people who are just raving about Scrivener. There are a couple of these statements that Joseph would like to share. He says that one of his all-time favorite Scrivener fan quotes is: I love Scrivener so much that I want to marry it and have its babies. It s adorable, organized babies.

It s probably fair to say that this person is a fan of Scrivener, don t you think? Here s another quote: Scrivener is the best thing to happen since the toaster!!! Now, it s taken to a whole new level, passed the typewriter and onto the toaster. Joseph often gets a kick out of what Scrivener fans have to say and he enjoys hearing about how much people love the software. However, the fact of the matter is that not everyone starts out loving Scrivener so much. Actually, a lot of people question, Am I the only one who doesn t get Scrivener??? Joseph says that he felt this way during the beginning. He kept hearing about how great it was and what it could do for you, and every time he d start to use it, he d become frustrated. He just couldn t understand why he didn t understand what to do with the software. Over time, Joseph found that he wasn t the only one that felt this way about the program. Behind closed doors people were saying completely different things about Scrivener. They didn t know if it was something that they were doing wrong, but they were just frustrated with it. A lot of people just gave up on it for months. Maybe your Scrivener is sitting there collecting dust on the virtual shelf too.

Joseph admits that he gets a little obsessive about things when he can t figure something out. This truly angered him, and he spent months picking up books on how to use Scrivener, reading every article, and he did everything that he could think to do in order to figure out the software. He s glad to say that he did because today he can t say enough about how revolutionary this was for his writing, and this is what caused him to create his best selling course Learn Scrivener Fast! This is going to be touch upon in more detail further on in this lesson for those who are interested. He just couldn t go on letting people feel that way about Scrivener when he saw the real power behind it. Joseph really believes that Scrivener can be your secret weapon once you know how to use it right. That s the key. You ve got to know how to use it right, and as you know, any tool is only as good as the person who is actually using it. Let s get started. There are really four different phases of the Scrivener Ninja, as Joseph likes to call it. In Phase #1, you are going to learn about the basics. This will get you up and running quickly. Next, you re going to learn how you can organize your writing. There are several different ways to go about this in Scrivener. Next, you re going to get some productivity tips, and then finally, you re going to learn about how to compile and export your work. You ll also receive some great advice on what you can do with what you ve compiled after you re done.

Getting Started Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs. - Henry Ford The quote shared above is one of Joseph s favorites. This statement is so simple, yet so true. This is something that Joseph lives by in his work as well as in using Scrivener. That s what this lesson is going to be all about. Everything will be broken down into small pieces so that things are easier to understand. Look at the screenshot above. This is the Scriverner software interface, in case you ve never seen it before. If you have never used this software before, it can be a bit overwhelming, and you may not be quite sure what to do with it. Joseph says that s how he felt when he was first using it. Let s get started and just talk about the main windows. First of all, over on the left-hand side, you ll find a side panel. This is called your binder, and this is where you ll collect everything and begin putting it together. Up at the top of the interface, you ll find your main toolbar area. You can customize this and arrange it in any way you like. Below this, you ll find the format bar, and over on the right-hand side, you ll find

what s called the inspector area. If you look down at the bottom of this segment, you ll find that there are some little buttons there too. A whole training could probably be held on this interface, all of the options it contains, and how it is all meant to work. In this lesson, however, the focus will be on the highlights of this program so that you can get up and running very quickly. When you first fire up Scrivener, you re going to be asked to pick a template. This is for a couple of reasons. First, you are going to have to save this project to your computer because Scrivener will automatically save your document every two seconds. So, there s no more worrying about losing your writing or constantly hitting Save or Save As like you re probably used to doing in Microsoft Word. The other thing is that the program is going to be catering your binder area to the particular type of writing that you are doing. Joseph was using a blank template so that he could customize it for whatever he needed to do in his presentation. However, if you look at the screenshot above, you will be able to see that there are a number of different templates that you can use. Specifically, you can choose from the following types of templates: Blank Fiction Nonfiction Scriptwriting

Poetry & Lyrics Miscellaneous You can also load in your own custom templates, which is really cool. By the way, if you are on a Mac, your screen is going to look very similar to the one shown above. If you are on a PC, your screen might look just a little bit different, but don t fret because the functionality is pretty much the same. There might be a little bit of difference in how you navigate things. If you were to right click on the menu bar up at the top, you would be able to choose Customize Toolbar from the dropdown menu that appears. This will bring a window full of options up. These are the tools that are available to you. You can simply click and drag these in and out of the toolbar so that you have all the tools that you like to use the most right there and easily available. Joseph always tells people to choose the tools based on the type of writing that you re doing. So, for example, if you are currently organizing or outlining, you might choose to include your arrow buttons because you ll be moving things around a lot. Now, once you get into an editing mode, you might want to use the snapshot tools and things of that nature. All of this will be gone over in greater detail throughout the lesson. For now, just keep in mind that all of these tools are available to you. They are easy to use and accessible. The Binder Area is designed to work just like a physical binder would. What do you typically keep a binder for? To keep everything in one place, right? This is where you will keep all of your files and your folders. You may even put loose leaf papers in the back, or pictures. That s what the Binder Area is designed to be. This is where you keep everything together, all in one spot. Next, there s the corkboard. Your corkboard has index cards on it. This looks real, but Joseph really wants you to think of these as though they were index cards that were paper-clipped to a to a folder inside of your binder. If you were doing a large project, and you had index cards paper-clipped to a folder, what would be on them? Probably little notes to yourself, right? You may have notes about what s inside of that folder, and maybe so notes that are meant to jog your memory. That s sort of how the index cards are used in this program. The cool thing is that you can move these index cards around. So, just think of it like you took the index cards off of the folder, and you are sitting on the floor, trying to organize them. This is a great way to work on your story structure, but there are other ways that you can use these cards as well. Scrivener is a very versatile program, and that s part of what makes it so much fun and useful to use. However, that s also one of the reasons why people have trouble using it initially.

What you are going to learn today is just a couple of different ways that you can go about using Scrivener, so don t let that box you in. Let your creativity flow, and let the ideas come from you. Jot those notes down. If you are shown an idea on how to jot notes down for a fiction book, but you have an idea of how you can use it for nonfiction, jot that down. Be sure to go back and explore that later too. The process is meant to be very flexible, so just remember that. Now, let s get into adding files and folders into the main area. You are going to start out with an untitled document. If you look at the binder over to the left in the picture above, you will see that there are three different items. First, there s your Drafts. This is the main container where all of your writing is going to happen. You ll find a research folder below the Drafts. This is where everything that s in addition to your writing is going to go. This could include pictures, PDFs, web pages, and even audio files. The possibilities are endless. You can store everything you need right inside of this research area. Finally, there s a little trash can symbol. This is your trash, and it s going to hold everything that you delete. It kind of works like the recycle bin on a computer. So, what you delete isn t permanently deleted until you tell the program to discard it. These are the three main containers that every project will have. Now, you can change the name of these if you want. For example, some people like to change the name of their research folder to something like cabinet. You can get as creative as you want to and really make this program your own. You could start typing away at this point if you wanted to. First, let s explore how to add more documents or files to your Drafts folder. You ve probably noticed that there is a big button up

on the toolbar that has a + symbol inside of it. When you click on this, another document will be added to your Drafts. Let s say that you added this document and you renamed the document Scene 1. Then, let s say that you clicked on the green + button again to add another document, and you renamed that document Scene 2. Now that you have three different documents, you d like to keep organized, so you d like to add a folder. All you have to do is click on the green button again, but this time hold your mouse button down on it for a couple of seconds. When you do, a dropdown menu will appear, and it will contain the option to add a folder. You can rename this folder too, if you like. You might rename it Chapter 1, for instance. In the picture above, you can see that this is what Joseph has done. If you look down at the bottom of the interface, on the left-hand side, you ll find that there is a folder button with a + symbol beside it. You can add a folder this way too. You ll find that there are a couple of different options for a lot of the functions in Scriviner. You just kind of find your own way around. Joseph put the Scene 1 and Scene 2 documents inside of the Chapter 1 folder. Hopefully, you re starting to see how this all comes together. If you are the kind of person who likes to get organized before they start writing, you re going to love this. This program allows you to really visualize everything, and anytime you want to

change something, you pretty much just have to click and drag a document from one folder to the next to reorganize. On the other hand, if you are the kind of person that likes to write on the fly, then it s perfect for you too, because you can just write and organize things as you go. Sometimes people will say something like I can t use Scrivener yet. Right now I have all of my writing in Microsoft Word (or another word processor), and I don t want to switch things around because I m afraid I ll lose something. Joseph always tells people that they are limiting themselves when they do this. There s just so many more things that you can do with it in Scrivener, and it doesn t take long at all to switch your documents over. Let s say that you wanted to plug in a document from Microsoft Word. All you have to do is select your Drafts folder, click on File, and then choose Import. After that, you will be able to choose Files. From there, a window will open up, allowing you to browse for the document you wish to import. Once you find the one that you want, simply select it and click on the Import button. The document will then import, and you find it at the bottom of your Drafts folder. An even easier way to do this is to open up the folder it s in on your computer, and you can simply drag and drop it into Scrivener. The program also makes it really easy to split up your documents. For instance, let s say that the text in your document all ran together, and you wanted to separate your introduction section from the section to follow. You can just place the cursor right before you re the headline of the second section, click on Documents, and then choose Split followed by At Selection. This will split the first document into two different ones, making it easier to organize what you have. You can select a portion of the text and make that the title of the document that you are splitting it into. In other words, if you select a portion of your text, such as your headline, you can click Documents and Split and you ll see that there is another option under the Split submenu. You can select With selection as title. Not only will your document be split now, but the new page you create will have a relevant title. You could keep splitting up your document this way until you reach the last section if you like. There s a keyboard shortcut for each of these two options as well, as you can see in the screenshot below.

By using these options, you can quickly and easily split up your documents and arrange the sections however you wish. That s pretty great, isn t it? There s an even easier way to do this. To demonstrate this, Joseph went head and removed the documents he had just added to the presentation by throwing them in the trash can. This was pretty easy to do too. He selected each one of the documents by holding down the Cmd (Ctrl) button as he clicked on each one, and then he clicked on the red button with the slash through the middle (the do not symbol) to dispose of the documents for now. Next, he selected Drafts again, and then he pulled up a document in Microsoft Word. This time, he went through and put a hashtag symbol right before the heading of each one of the sections of the document, where he wanted them to be split up. You can see this demonstrated in the screenshot below. This doesn t take very long at all to do. Once you have all of these put in, you can save your Microsoft Word document, go back to Scrivener, and started to import the document. However, this time instead of choosing Files from the Import submenu, he chose Import and Split from the bottom of that submenu.

When you begin browsing for the document, there will be a little section down at the bottom that says Sections are separated by, and then in the field to the right of this, there should be a hashtag sign. That s how the program knows where to make the split. You might want to check and make sure that this is right before moving forward, and if it s right, you can go ahead and click on the file you want to add and click on the Import button. When the document is inserted into Scrivener, it will be made into separate documents where you made the marks to split it up. That s pretty awesome. The document that Joseph was using as an example was pretty short, but imagine if you were using a pretty long one? In less than five minutes you could mark each section title with hashtags and you could have it all split up and organized in Scrivener in no time. Once you have your documents all split up the way that you want them, you could begin organizing them in separate folders and so forth. It s all pretty straightforward, really.

Any type of file that you bring in will import that way if you want it to. Of course, you can also import files by dragging and dropping, and good old copy and paste works too. Just remember that opens up opportunities for errors to occur, meaning that you might miss something as you are copying and pasting and then lose it. Importing the documents in is really the safest way to go.

Organizing Your Documents with a Different View Not every word processor is going to give you the ability to arrange and rearrange in such a click and drag manner. Usually, you don t have the ability to assess your organization visually either. One of the main ways that you can view one of your folders is shown above. This is called the Corkboard view, and it s one of the most popular. However, there are other ways that you can view your files, and the options for this can be found right next to the search bar in the screenshot above. Do you see the three little rectangles there? The one in the middle is brown, and that is the button you would select to view your documents as cards on a cork board. This particular view, the cork board, only displays when you are on the file level. If you click on one of the documents, you ll see it as a document. This seems trivial, but if you don t know that, it can really drive you a bit nuts because you try to view the cork board and you can t figure out why the program isn t letting you. When you are in this view, you can click on each one of the cards individually in order to access the document that they represent. You can also rearrange these cards (your documents) very easily in this view by simply clicking one card and dragging it over to another position. As you make these changes, the documents are also automatically rearranged in the side panel, or

binder area. Vice versa, anything that s rearranged in the binder will also be automatically rearranged within the cork board. To the right of the option in the toolbar for the corkboard view, you ll find a button for the outline view option. This is now selected in the screenshot above, and as you can see, the information in the main portion of the interface is in more of a list form now. This isn t quite as pretty as the other view, but it s more highly detailed. As you can see, in this view, there are several different columns. You could sort by them and you can rearrange them. There are also a number of different columns you can add to this view if you wish. You can access. All you have to do to see this menu is to right-click at the top of one of these columns. There are a whole lot of different options that will appear when you do. Anyway, you can use this view as an outline. It works very much the same way. Another thing to keep in mind is that a lot of the windows within the program can be opened and closed. For example, if you know that all you are going to be doing is working on your outline for a while, then you can go ahead and closed the Inspector area (the panel on the right) in order to just get it out of the way since you know you re not going to be using it any time soon. Just click on the blue information icon up in the toolbar to do this.

If you wanted to close the binder area, you could do so by just clicking on the binder symbol. This is located on the far left of the screenshot above. Both of the panels are now closed, as you can see in the picture. Doing this will give you more space to work within, and it will allow you to work without so many distractions. You can do this when you are in the corkboard view too. This will give you a lot more real estate to shuffle your cards around in. Another interesting feature is that you can set presets for the views that you most prefer in this program. Once this is done, you can modify your screen to be laid out the way you prefer with just the click of a button. That s just a simple option that a lot of people don t realize they have. Now, let s talk about the third view, which is Scrivening View. In this view, your documents are all laid out in order within one single document, and there is a divider placed between each of the different sections. This view is very helpful when you want to see how one portion of your book transitions to the next. That way, you don t have to switch back and forth between different documents. So, you can still see the separations throughout, so you know when this is occurring, but you can also make sure that the flow is right from one section to the next. So, there are different views that you can use for the different writing processes you go through.

There s also a full-screen, or distraction-free mode. This is demonstrated above. As you can see, this view allows you to focus on nothing but your writing. It removes all other distractions from your interface. You can customize this view too. You can fade out the background, or you can have your own image placed in the background if you want to. Joseph says that sometimes he ll put a picture of a beach or even his family back there. You could also use a picture that helps inspire you to write the story that you re working on. It just depends on how you want to use it. The program also allows you to change your paper width in this view. A lot of times Joseph will make his paper a little thinner, but he will zoom in to about 125% because this helps him to see a little bit better. Anyway, the idea behind this is to give you a nice place to write. This is one of Joseph s favorite features of the program. He recommends that you spend as much time in this view as you can once you have your stuff organized and outlined. Just stay in this view and keep writing. This will help you out immensely. To leave this view, all you have to do is hit Esc. Let s dive a bit deeper into how people would use these tools. A lot of people have been asking for tips on how to use the cork board view. It seems like everyone loves the cork board. Joseph used some text from Hunger Games in his demonstration. Look at the screenshot below. Right away, you ll notice that there are a lot of index cards on the cork board right now. Again, all of these cards are highly customizable.

Down at the bottom of the screen, in the footer area, you ll find that there are more buttons that you can use. These options will allow you to do a lot, such as change the sizes of the cards to allow for more room on the cork board or you can make them bigger if you like so that you can see more. You can see that there s text inside of each of these cards. When you double click on a card, you can bring up the entire document it represents. If you look over to the right when a page is opened up, you ll notice that the Inspector contains an index card. In the cork board view, you can write anything that you want on the cards, and when you do, you ll notice that it shows up over on the Inspector. Let s say that you want each of the cards to show a synopsis, or a preview, about what s in the document. There s a little button on the top right of the Inspector area. This is what you want. You can click on this button to auto-generate a synopsis of the document that you have opened up. So, all you have to do is click on the button and a synopsis will appear in the Inspector. You don t have to do this one-by-one. You can go back and highlight multiple scenes. One way to do this is to select one document, hold down the Shift key and select Multiple. Once you have multiple documents selected, there are options under Documents that you can use to either auto-generate synopsis or even a title. If you have chosen auto-generate synopsis, each of the cards that you have chosen will be auto-filled with a synopsis. Joseph recommends that you get into the habit of selecting multiple drafts at once because it will save a lot of time.

You may notice that the cards in the picture above have different colors on them. This training is going to cover the use of these colors in more detail because this really is one of the most underutilized, yet beneficial, features of this program. After you learn more about it, you are going to wonder how you ever used Scriviner before without using color. The options for tagging a card with a color can be found within the Inspector. One way that Joseph likes to use color is mark whose point of view each card is in. You can edit these labels by clicking on the dropdown box for this section and choosing Edit. This will bring back the window in the picture below. You may notice that Joseph used this feature to assign a color to each of the four main characters from the book. From this window, you can change the name of the label, add more labels, and choose to add more labels or delete labels. You can even customize the title. If you want to add a button, simply click on the + button within this window. Alternatively, if you want to delete one, you can select the one you want to delete and then simply click on the minus button. The color pink, in this case, represents Peta. So, all of the cards with pink on them contain a story line from his point of view. If you see a card marked with orange, that scene is in Gale s point of view. The green represents Katniss. You get the idea. The cool part about using the colors to represent point of view is that you can tell, at a glance which parts of the story pertain to what character. What if you are in the binder or in another view? If you were to go to View, which is a menu item on the toolbar. Next, Joseph scrolled down to Use POV Color In, and then he chose Binder. Now, Joseph actually changed the title

to his labels. So this menu option may be a bit different for you. It may say something like Use Label Color In. Anyway, when Joseph chose the binder option, all of the pages in the binder changed to a different color. This is demonstrated in the screenshot below. You can do this for your index cards too. This is also demonstrated in the picture above. You may notice that one of them didn t have a label because it s white now. You can quickly see how all of these are arranged. There s one last color option that you can use, and that s to color code the outline view. When you do, all of the rows in the outline are color coded. This particular view gives you a bit of a bonus. One of the things that you can do in this view is sort by columns. So, if you sort these by point of view, then you can have all of the documents with the same point of view sorted together. This could come in handy in multiple ways. In the Inspector took, under the dropdown menu for the labels, you ll find a Status option. What is this? This will allow you to sort your writing by what phase it is in. For example, you can set the status of a document to First Draft. You can change these to whatever you want. Joseph says that he has a friend who uses this often because his first drafts or always horrid. So, this man would usually use this feature to create a label titled crap. Of course, this he keeps between himself and his computer, but this furthers the point that you should customize Scriverner and make it yours. There s nothing wrong with joking around about it, being creative, and letting any ideas you have just flow through you into the program. Joseph gave one of the documents a Final Draft status during his presentation. When he did this, however, nothing about the card status showed anywhere. So, Joseph clicked on View

and then he selected Corkboard Options. In the submenu for this, there was an option that said Show Status Stamps. Joe selected this, which put a check mark by this option, and after this was done, there was a stamp across each of the cards showing its status. You can see this demonstrated in the screenshot below. You can see in the picture that Scene 2 was written in Katniss point of view (POV), and that it has a To Do status, meaning that it still needs to be worked on more. Hopefully, you can see how you can use these different statuses to quickly view the different stages of your writing. Little things like using colors and labels can really make a big difference in your writing process. One thing that you should take note of is that you can sort by the status in your outline view. This might even be more valuable. You can have everything grouped together that are still in To Do status, for example, and everything grouped together that s still in first draft mode. The Inspector area stays with you the whole time. At the bottom of the panel you have a little window that you can add notes to. These are going to be specific to the document that you re working on. So, if you leave a note in Scene 1, then you move to Scene 4, the note that you just left will no longer be shown. However, when you move back to Scene 1 it will reappear. If you want to create a note that is project wide, or follows you no matter what document you re working within, there s a dropdown that you can click on to the top-right of this notepad. If you click on that, you ll notice that you ll have the ability to choose Project Notes.

Once you choose this option, your notes will follow you as you move from one document to the other. Let s say that you wanted to change your last five scenes to be in the point of view of Katniss. Again, you can select multiple documents in the binder by selecting one, holding down the Shift button, and selecting the last one. All of the different files that you wanted to choose should now be highlighted in the binder. You can right-click on them, and a window will appear. You will see that you have menu options for both your labels and your status options. By simply clicking on one of your labels, you can mark all of your documents. You can see in the picture below that now everything is in Katniss point of view. You may also notice that when these six documents were selected, they were the only ones shown in the corkboard view. This is a nice feature because sometimes you just want to see certain cards. The documents don t have to be in order either. If you would like to select certain cards nonconsecutively, you do the same thing, except you hold down the Cmd (Ctrl) button as you select the files that you want to view one at a time. Another cool aspect of this is that you can leave the files selected as you move through different views. In the picture below, for example, scenes 10, 7, and 2 are selected within the binder. They were the only three files shown on the corkboard. When Joseph moved to the outline mode, they were still the only three files shown. Hopefully you are starting to see that

there is an immense amount of useful features in this program, and yet it still remains very flexible, which is not something that you find with most programs.

Staying Productive Now let s discuss productivity. When you are within one of the drafts, you ll find that there s a word count and a category count down at the bottom. Then, to the right of this you ll find a progress bar, and to the right of that, there s a bullseye. If you click on this bullseye, a window will pop up, and you can set a target for this document. As you move closer to your goal, the progress bar changes. So, imagine that you are working on a document, and you ve set a target for yourself. The progress bar changes from red, to yellow, to green as you keep working. This can be highly motivating. This is going to give you that little extra push that you need sometimes. You can take this a step further by clicking on Project and selecting Show Project Targets. A window will appear that gives you the ability to set draft targets and session targets. Then, if you click Options you will be able to do even more. In the next window to appear, you can set a date for your deadline, and you can get very specific with your targeting. The program will keep everything calculated for you, and it will even send you notifications about the goals you target, if you like. All of these features can really help to keep you on track.

Another very interesting feature is that Scrivener makes statistics about your project available for you. The Project Statistics window is shown in the screenshot below. As you can see, you can look at how many words you ve written within a project, how many characters, and even how many pages you ve printed. There are tons of statistics that you can look into within this window. You can find the option to open this window up within the Project menu. There s another window that you can look up under Project, and that s your Text Statistics. When you choose this, a window with basic statistics will appear, such as your word count. However, down at the bottom there s a little Word frequency option you can click on and it will show you how many times you ve used a particular word. People pay good money for programs that will do this for you, but this tool is available to you as part of Scrivener. You can actually sort the frequency amount so that all of the words you use most frequently are up at the top. Of course, there will be the common words that everyone uses a lot, like the word the, but once you get past these you can start looking with a critical eye on other words that you are using a lot and decide if you want to change some of them up or maybe just refrain from using them so much.

There are certain aspects of this program that just drive people crazy because these things can keep you from being as efficient. First of all, keep in mind that you can bump up the size of your text by clicking on the little percentage amount at the bottom-left of your document. So, you don t actually have to change the size of the font to look at your text more closely. Under the Scrivener menu, you ll find Preferences. This is shown in the screenshot below. This is one of those areas that are going to look a lot different if you are on a PC. Find the option for Formatting, and the screen will show what your font currently looks like. If you change the formatting here, the changes will be applied to each document you create thereafter. You will have to go back and change the formatting of any documents that you currently have done.

In the screenshot above, you may also have noticed that there s a little button on the top-left that says Use formatting in current editor, You can be very specific with these options if you like, or you can just set things up the way that you want them for now. There are also options in this window to customize your corkboard. You can change the font, text size, or even the cork background if you like. You may use a solid color, or you could change it to a family photo, or whatever else you may like. You can even change the way your index cards appear. Why not play around with some of these options and make your writing fun. One of the best tools that you have available to you is your Snapshots tool. Let s say that you wanted to change something, but you just aren t sure how you feel about it. In another program, you d probably create a new document and copy and paste the portion you weren t sure about into there. In Scrivener, you can just take a snapshot. There s a snapshot icon up on your toolbar. It looks like a little camera. There s also a similar icon down at the bottom of the Investigator panel. You can click on either one of the two buttons, and a window will appear over to the right. Before you begin to change anything, you can take a snapshot of your page by clicking on the + button up at the top of the window. When you do, the program will make a little sound that looks like a camera shutter. You ll then see it listed within the panel, and you can change the title to anything you like. Joseph changed the title of his snapshot to Before Idea. The snapshot tool will also time stamp it for you. After that, you can change details within your document without having to worry about losing what you had before.

Sometimes you want to change something as you re writing, and at first it seems like a good change, but then when you look back at it the next day, you no longer like what you did. Has this ever happened to you? You can just click the Roll Back button at the top of the snapshot panel, and Scrivener will even ask if you want to take a snapshot of your current work before it rolls your document back.. You should think about doing this for each version of your draft. These revisions are going to help you to become a better writer because you re going to be able to see your changes through there. You should get in the habit of using these snapshots on a regular basis. There s a compare feature that you can use to see two snapshots together. You are even able to see what was changed between the two versions. This gets kind of fun, especially when you have a lot. Over in your binder, you ll see a tiny curled corner on the page icon. That s how you know that a document has a snapshot associated with it. Snapshots are your ultimate safety net. Keep that in mind. When it comes to your research, you can just click and grab website URLs and drop them into your research folder. When you do, the entire page drops in and you end up with a complete, fully-functional web page inside of Scrivener. You can bring as many as you want into the program. Just like any other part of the binder, you can add folders, color-code items, and so on. So, whether you are writing fiction or non-fiction, you can bring in all of your research so that you have it all right there at your fingertips. One feature that s really helpful is that you can split your editor into two. The option for doing this is located at the top-right of the editor. You can do so vertically or horizontally. You can do this in many different ways, but when it comes to research this is incredibly useful because you can have your research over on one side of the spit while you were working within the other.

As you can see, this gives you the ability to have your research right on hand as you work. You can make the two windows bigger or smaller depending on if you need more room for writing or more room for going through the data you have found. You can also make a selection and have it a portion of your research pop out into a floating window. That s pretty handy in itself, but if you go into distraction-free mode, you can also have this floating window follow you so that you can work with just your draft and your research this way. Joseph says that he likes to work this way. He will typically move his draft over to the left and size up the window on the right so that it s easy to navigate. This setup is shown below. Surely you can tell just how great it would be to be able to concentrate, having our research right there at your fingertips and nothing else but your editor to have to deal with while you write. This should help you immensely.

You can drag and drop pictures into Scrivener too. Let s say that you were writing a story about a creepy cabin. You can store a picture of this cabin in one of your research folders. This can not only help you to stay inspired, set the mood, and it can also help when you are describing a scene. Again, you can split your screen so that the picture is right there or you can pop it out into a window and go to distraction-free mode. You can even scale the image inside of the editor to the size that you need it to be. Just double click on it to do so. You can do this with audio files, you can do this with PDFs, and really, you can do this with virtually anything. You really should utilize this research area. It s so much fun to have everything right at our fingertips.

Exporting Your Document When you are ready to export your work, choose File followed by Compile. The window that will appear is shown above. This looks a bit intimidating, but it s not as difficult as you might think, there are just a lot of options. Scrivener is a really powerful program that you can do a lot with. In most cases, you only need to use a small number of them, however. This first section shows all of the contents of the binder you have created. If you don t want to include certain things in your export, all you have to do is uncheck them. There are a lot of different categories over on the left-hand side. Each of them contain their own options. They include: Contents Separators Cover Formatting Layout Transformations

HTML Settings Replacements Statistics Tables Footnotes & Comments Metadata KindleGen Joseph didn t go over all of these during his original presentation. The next thing he did was he went over the Cover options. You can simply use any image that you have put into your binder. If you already had some cover art made, you can just drop it in here. There are all sorts of different options within these categories, and the best way to learn them is to just go in and play around with things. One of the options that you do need to pay attention to is the Compile For dropdown menu. In the screenshot below, it s set to compile your book as a Kindle ebook. If a Kindle book is what you are trying to create, all you have to do at this point is click on Compile and you re done. You ll have.mobi file in less than 20 seconds, and it will be ready to be uploaded to the Kindle store. It does all of the heavy lifting for you, and this is something

that people pay for a whole separate program for. If you would rather publish an epub file, you can simply choose that from the dropdown menu instead. There are lots of other options too. You can create a PDF, you can print it, and you can even export your document back to Microsoft Word. Just think about how much time this program can save you. Joseph hopes that you can see just how powerful Scrivener can be. This program can be a bit overwhelming because it does have so many different options. That s what really makes it a great program though; there are so many features that not only can make you stay organized and become more efficient, but also can make things fun for you and keep you inspired. On top of all of that, you have options like the split screen and the snapshot that make it much easier for you to compare your writing and create better drafts.

Introducing Learn Scrivener Fast I know we ve covered a LOT of ground in this training, and if you re ready to take your book writing and Amazon publishing to the next step -- possibly even doubling your productivity and royalties -- Joseph has so much more to show you. It s called Learn Scrivener Fast, and as a friend and subscriber of Jay Boyer, you ll be able to access it at a $100 discount this weekend only. Joseph has been able to enjoy a lot of success because he took the time to learn to use Scrivener optimally. He s also been able to help thousands of other people accelerate their writing careers as well. He says that it s been a real blast. Here s what some of his students have said about this program I love how simple Scrivener is when someone explains it visually. Before, I spent all my time looking for how to work in Scrivener. Now I spend all my time writing in Scrivener. I organized my entire blog, learned Evernote, (talked my husband into using Evernote), and wrote an ebook, all within two weeks of opening Learn Scrivener Fast. The best part is now I can think about writing, not tech stuff. Here s a quote from another student: This taught Me How To Be An Organized Writer!

I was initially a bit uncertain about it, but have found the visual show-and-tell technique very effective in seeing how to use Scrivener. More than simply teaching how to use the various features, my favorite parts are seeing how to use Scrivener to organize the process of writing. Below is yet another quote from one of Joseph s students. This is one of his favorites. She says: My Progress is Unreal! I think the most surprising aspect was how easy it was to create my outline. Seeing parts, chapters, etc for my novel come alive when on the corkboard, outlined that way! I am about finished with my outline, and I know my story from beginning to end! Normally, it would take me about 6 months to almost a year to get one done. I m a homeschool mother, so for me, this is major! Joseph says that his wife is a homeschool mother too. So, he knows first hand how much of your time that takes up, and he knows what this woman says is true. That s one of the great things about Scrivener. Once you know how to use it right, it gives you the ability to stay organized, stay motivated, and to make some real progress. Below you ll find another quote from a happy student: I had merely tinkered with Scrivener. I had experimented a bit, trying to produce ebooks and done okay, but stopped there. Now I feel like I can write with a degree of freedom. Watching you walk through the process from starting a project to finishing has been really beneficial.

A lot has been covered in just today s lesson, but there s so much more you can do with this program. If you like what you were shown today, then you re going to simply adore the rest of Joseph s Training. There is a lot that hasn t been covered and Joseph would like to have the chance to guide you through all the possibilities that you have with this program. Here s what you ll discover when you invest in Learn Scrivener Fast: How to use your project notes so you can literally find your ideas on-demand without having to stop writing and search all over the place for your notes. The simple, little know secret that will shave off weeks of time editing your writing. Hint: Just one click can help you replace the name of a character or the name of the place without having to do it manually throughout your entire piece! How you can go back to multiple versions of your work and continue to improve it without losing any of your comments or your editor s notes. How to customize your background, your corkboard, and your index cards so it matches your writing style and how you like to work (perfect for anyone who likes to do things their way). How you can access Scratchpad and send to any folder on the fly, even while you re watching your favorite YouTube video or doing research for your next book or batch of articles. Yes, there s still so much more to learn about this self-publishing super-tool. It s really a writer s best friend, whether you re publishing children s books to Kindle, writing your PHD thesis, or blogging once a week. Here s some more writing secrets that you ll have revealed to you with Learn Scrivener Fast: How to use presets so you don t have to reinvent the wheel and can be hyperproductive every time you sit down to write. How to test and guarantee your writing is great before it ever sees the light of day How to create systems that will do those little, annoying tasks automagically for you, so you can write even more. How to print your work for your editor or even yourself and seriously impress the pants off people

How to set-up the right font and back pages, so your ebook is in the perfect condition for publishing. (So many people miss or don t know how to do this the video in this module shows you how to do it in less than 3 minutes!) Do you really have time to figure all of this out on your own? What if you had someone to help you solve the problems that you need to solve? What if you had your own personal Scrivener genie? What if you had someone like Joseph? He could be your Scrivener genie. You can see that he makes a pretty awesome one in the picture above! What if you had a Scrivener genie, like Joseph, right next to you at your favorite writing spot, showing you exactly what to do to solve every issue and every frustration you have ever come across? That would be awesome, right! Is that something that you d wish for? Of course, you would, maybe after asking for more wishes. Of course, that s what we d all ask for. Joseph says I m here to grant that wish for you today. You have the chance to take advantage of an exclusive offer today. This program is completely packaged and organized beautifully. He s very detailed, and he has to have his stuff look nice and flow right. He knows that you are going to love going through this training. There s no extra reading, and no hour-long, blurry tutorials with bad audio. You re going to get crystal clear videos to watch. You can watch the training and learn to use Scrivener as you go along, but what people like the most about this is that it s the ultimate research to refer to when you get stuck. You will have

the ability to watch exactly what Joseph does, in an over-the-shoulder fashion, as he shows you how to do a multitude of different things within Scrivener. The training that Joseph is providing you with can be reviewed on any device, whether you prefer using your laptop, ipad, desktop computer, Smartphone, etc. Essentially, you can review the training on anything that s digital and you have an internet connection to, except that you can also download the videos, so you can even watch these videos on a plane. This is the only Scrivener training course you will ever need. You ll never have to go look up another YouTube video or dust off some old book on the subject and review hundreds of pages. There are five modules in this training, and they are all done with screen-share videos and an enormous amount of pictures. Joseph created something that he wished he would have had starting out. In addition to the videos and the screen-shares, he took a picture of every single step and every single click that is shown in the videos. So, if you are a visual learner like Joseph is, you can jump in and just look at the pictures. This isn t something that you could do with a book because the book would be huge, but with an online course you can do that. Joseph worked to make this course very easy to digest. So, each module consists of just 2-5 minute bite-sized videos which tackle one topic at a time. Again, these videos are great to reference if you ever get stuck when you re working in Scrivener. This also helps because you aren t going to have to sit down for 45 minutes while Joseph covers this big, long lesson. You ll just be able to hop on, learn what you want to learn, and then go try what you learned out. You can go read hundreds of five-star reviews on Learn Scriviner Fast. Over 10,000 people have gone through this course. This has been Joseph s life s work, and he super-proud of it. Kindle Recycling is going to show you how to take any non-fiction Kindle ebook and turn it into a high-value, high-ticket information product. This is one way that you can take an existing asset that you ve already got out there, that maybe is under-performing, and turn it into a completely brand new revenue stream. It s possible to make hundreds or even thousands more this way, and you ll be utilizing that very same ebook that may not be selling so well in Kindle form right now. These were all people who had already bought his books and this is how he pulls people off of Amazon so that he continue to market to them and build relationships with them through his subscribers list. This is how he drives any and all future books that he publishes to become #1 bestsellers. He does this with a single that goes out to his subscribers. If you re wondering how you can guarantee that your book is going to be a bestseller every time you publish one, this is how you do it. You use funnels and build up your audience so that you have plenty of people to send to any newly published works you have. When you click on the link for this portion of the bonus on the page, you ll be able to see descriptions of all three of these funnels and you ll be able to learn how they work. You ll also be getting a course of Jay s called Kindle List Explosion. Jay charges $197 for program by itself. This course goes hand in hand with the book funnels that he s giving you. This training is going to show you how to create amazingly attractive book covers for your first book.

With this package, you re also going to receive 40 super-pro book cover templates. Some of them are shown in the screenshot above. What if your book cover looked like one of these? Do you think that this might make a difference in the amount of sales that you get and the amount of readers you add to your author s platform? Of course, it would.
