This one is titled The Dinosaur Picture Book, and it contained 101 dinosaur pictures. Aside from being on the topic of dinosaurs, there are a few other commonalities between these three books.

6 One of the main things that these books have in common is that they are non-fiction books. They aren t stories. They are all fact-based books which are largely picture-based. Well, James ended up running out of ideas for more dinosaur books, and as a result these books pretty much stopped selling. James isn t a fiction book author, and he didn t have any idea how to write fiction. James admits, he doesn t have a creative bone in his body. James did what he has always done when he had a problem. He started studying and researching his problem. When he did, he came across a method which was called the Socratic Method. This is a very ancient method. You may have heard of it before. It sounds complicated, but it s actually quite simple. The Socratic Method was developed by Socrates. He was a Greek philosopher and he did a lot of brainstorming back in his day, which was about 2,000 years ago. For those of you who have never heard of the Socratic Method before, it is a form of inquiry and discussion between individuals. It is based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to illuminate ideas.

7 When James was reading up on the Socratic Method, in his research, he learned that authors would sometimes use the Socratic Method to come up with ideas for their books. They would use it to come up with plot lines, and story lines, and story elements. James realized that you could write a children s book this way. In this scenario, you would just brainstorm story elements by asking questions. Let s give this a try, shall we? Look at the screenshot above. This is a mind map that James created. As you can see, he has already listed out all kinds of plot ideas that could be used in a children s story. 8 Solve the Crime Life Lessons Treasure Hunting Ocean Stories Out on Safari Farm Stories Post-Apocalyptic What you would want to do is choose one of these categories and then start brainstorming about it, asking questions pertaining to each of the following: Where? Who? How? When? Opportunities? Challenges? Resolution? Lesson? James asks the audience to choose a topic and they decide on Post-Apocalyptic. So, starting at the top of the list, the question would be Where would the Post Apocalyptic event happen? Here are some audience suggestions:

9 Next, they brainstormed the Who as in who is the main character. They decided the Main Character is a female and her name is Penny. She is 13 years old. Her positive attributes are: She is scientific minded, brave, popular, extroverted, independent, born leader. Her negative attributes are: sarcastic, jealous, quick to anger, non-emotional. Some of these may be mutually exclusive but at this stage we are just throwing out ideas so anything can change as the story progresses. As the brainstorming class continued these are additional ideas about Penny that were suggested that could be used in the story:

10 James then moved on to the How portion of the exercise and the class came up with these ideas for how the Post-Apocalyptic event happened: Next they discussed the When as in When did the event take place and came up with these ideas: Next they moved on to the Opportunities part of the brainstorming session. Opportunities are ideas for twists and turns and other plot elements in the story plot.

11 Next, what are the additional challenges they face? These are a few suggestions: Next, what is the Resolution to the story? In this case the audience decided that Penny convinces the aliens to not destroy the Earth. Finally what was the lesson the reader should learn from the story? Here are the suggestions: This story was developed within a matter of about 25 minutes, and it was done just by asking questions like What are the opportunities? and What are the challenges? Is that helpful? Since they were limited on time they only scoped out the main character but you should see how you can go back and brainstorm as many characters as you want. Do you think you could do this yourself? James says that what s most important to him is that it makes it fun to make up a story instead of a chore to do so. He recommends getting together with someone else to do this so you can bounce ideas off of each other. That makes it even more exciting and fun. You can really come up with lots of ideas this way.

12 Software Demo: Fiction Plot Producer Fiction Plot Producer is a piece of software that James and his team have been working on for the past several months. James put his best programmers on it, and they have come up with what he feels is an ingenious software product which will help you write fiction for children s books. 13 If the story calls for a male name you ll always get a male name, and if it calls for a female name, you ll always get a female name. Most of the time you re going to have more than one character too, by the way. You do have the ability to switch the gender of a character, and when you do a female name will pop up. You ll also find the back story of the character under the character s name. Within the story itself, you can make changes to the story. All you have to do to change various elements is click to Shuffle them. You can also lock things like a character s name. Once you have chosen a story that you like, you can lock the character to keep it from changing while you shuffle the other elements of your story. However, if you choose Shuffle Name to change a character s name, the name will change throughout the story. Now, the software wasn t meant for you to just take the story as-is. The way this works is that you have a story plot to start you off and then you change the various elements, such as the person s name, to make it your own. So, once you have a story that you re willing to work with, simply click Export and then choose the option to Copy to Clipboard. Then you can past the story into your own word processor and start expanding on it. You could also hand it off to an outsourcer for them to expand upon.

14 Again, there are a number of different plot categories to choose from, and there are multiple plots for each category. It contains plot ideas and categories that are suitable for children the age of three all the way up to their teenage years. This is mostly dependent upon the category that you choose.
