1 How to do a TED Talk A WORKSHOP BROUGHT TO YOU BY DAVE MAC AND PRESENTATION BLOGGER

2 About your trainer Hi there! I'm Dave Mac! Over the last 25 years I've worked across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, US, UK, China, Japan, and South Africa. The industries I've worked in range from banking and funds management through to marketing and education. In all of my roles there is one thing I've had to do consistently: deliver presentations and watch others do theirs. For the last 8 years I've been helping business people improve their communication and presentation skills. Let's get started!

3 About TED and TEDx If you ve got an idea worth sharing why not do a TED talk? But don t limit yourself to just TED. There s a whole world of regional TED events, called TEDx, that are easier to get involved with (and closer to home). Doing a TEDx talk gives you just as much chance of making it to be one of the most viewed speakers on TED.com (many of the top 25 talks on TED.com are TEDx talks!) There's probably one or more TEDx events running this year in your very city. Right now, there's nothing stopping you. You can get involved and potentially become a speaker. Just think what it could do for your reputation! On the following pages, accompanied by the workshop video, we ll go through everything you need to secure auditions so you can get to the podium.

4 Your idea worth sharing Everyone has knowledge worth sharing. You might not think you have anything worth sharing, but you do. Your idea worth sharing: The trouble with the stuff you know is that it s easy to fall into the trap of assuming because you know it everyone else does. Take some time to brainstorm. Think about difficulties you ve experienced and how you ve overcome them. Head over to TED.com and watch some talks to give you some inspiration. Make some notes about your worthy ideas in the space provided.

5 Your auditions - the most important part It doesn t matter how worthy your idea is if you can t get it in front of people. You need to discover the events you could speak at and make an active effort to get involved. Before you set about creating your speech you ll need to start setting up some auditions. Each event has its own theme so you need to start looking at where you ll be auditioning so you know how to frame your talk. Use the following website to locate events in your area:

6 Track events and auditions Each of the blue dots is an opportunity to step on the podium and share your idea. Using the TEDx event page locate some blue dots which are accessible to you (by car or train) and start noting down the details. Using these details you are going to start tracking the events in order to have the best chance of getting an audition and speaking at the event. On the next page you ll find a tracking sheet you can use to keep yourself organized. Doing so will give you the best chance of scoring an audition. Note: this tracker only works if you use it to diligently follow up with each event, check the event s website and Facebook regularly, sending applications/inquiry s, etc.

8 Developing your idea into a talk Congratulations! You scored an audition! Now you need to develop your talk. Use any guidelines you have received from the organizer, in conjunction with your idea worth sharing, to form the basis of your talk. The best place for getting structure ideas for your talk is to watch existing talks on TED.com Ultimately the success of your audition comes down to your idea. TED is a performance delivery and will have rehearsals and coaching. As such your delivery performance doesn t need to be perfect at the audition.

9 Important points to remember 18 minutes or less, talk duration Follow all guidelines from the organizer Practice, practice, practice! If you need slides, don t create them until you know exactly what you re going to say and you ve practiced Don t lecture! Aim to give the audience some new knowledge they can take away and use Be prepared to answer questions Be prepared to network with other speakers and the organizers You may be asked to change your talk to better fit with the event You will probably need to attend rehearsals and coaching sessions
