2 Mexico Travel Brochures Performance Task Purpose: This task is designed as a culminating assessment for a unit on Mexico and its culture, including the country s location, population, capital, landforms, famous places, and food. The students will receive instruction on those aspects of Mexico before performing the task. The task requires that students apply their knowledge of Mexico and the five themes of geography through the design and information presented in a travel brochure about Mexico. Show-Me Standards: Knowledge: SS5, CA1 Performance: 1.8, 2.1 Grade Level: 4-5 Subject Areas: Communication Arts, Social Studies. Materials Needed: Tag board, art supplies (crayons, markers, pencils, scissors, glue), travel books and magazines (for reference), task packet. Time Needed: 4-5 days, 40 minute periods. Teacher Instructions: Each student will receive a performance task packet containing the prompt, a scoring guide, and tag board for the brochure. The teacher will go through the prompt and scoring guide orally with the class, making sure all expectations are clear to the students. Pre-Assessment Instructions: Students will need a working understanding of the location of Mexico and its capital, its culture and people, and its prominent landmarks and famous places. Students will also need background in and understanding of the five themes of geography.

3 Mexico Travel Brochure: Prompt You are an employee at a travel agency. Your agency is planning to take a large tour group on a long vacation to Mexico, and your boss has asked you to prepare a brochure about Mexico to promote the trip. The brochure should attract tourists who would be interested in joining your agency s tour of Mexico. Your boss has required that you include the following information in your brochure: a map of Mexico, including the name and location of its capital the population of Mexico a picture of Mexico s flag three of Mexico s prominent land forms three famous places or tourist attractions in Mexico two illustrations of popular Mexican dishes and a description of each a three-sentence quote from yourself stating the best reason someone should visit Mexico Your brochure should be neat, colorful, creative, and the information you include should be written clearly. Check your brochure for spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and usage. Be sure to look at the scoring guide before beginning your task.
