Composition Allsop Research Paper Checklist Please read this schedule all the way through. The following due dates are a MINIMUM PACE to succeed. I encourage you to work at a faster pace where you can. While we will go through these steps together, I will move you on once you re ready I will move at your pace. If you finish a step ahead of schedule, please see me for instruction. PLEASE DO NOT MOVE ON WITHOUT INSTRUCTION FROM ME. Dates will be adjusted in the event of a snow day. However, the final due date will remain the same: 12/21/2017 OR 12/22/2017 in the event school is in session that day. NOTECARDS A Day B Day Date cards total Date cards total due cards due cards 11/7 IC /6 IC /9 IC /8 IC /9 HW /8 HW /13 IC due assigned 11/9 11/10 IC due assigned 11/8 11/13 HW /10 HW /15 IC due assigned 11/13 11/14 IC due assigned 11/10 IC= In-class research HW=Outside class research Review notecard procedures before beginning research. Remember to research from your class outline. Complete a bibliography card for EVERY source you use. CHECK EACH BIB CARD WITH ME! Remember: one idea per notecard; use a new source code and number your notecards for each source. You should begin numbering over with each new source. Use direct quotes, paraphrase, or summarize. Be familiar with the resources available to you, especially those online you can access from home. Be sure to request copies if you want info to take home. PLEASE ONLY USE THE SOURCES MADE AVAILABLE TO YOU. To count, these notecards must be signed by me and submitted on schedule. Remember, you need at least 150 SIGNED notecards, but you must also check these against your detailed outline. Do you have enough information to write about each topic and subtopic adequately? If not, continue with your notecards until you do. Be certain you have a minimum of 5 outside sources. More is ok. Fewer sources is not. 150 notecards completed and signed A: 11/15 B: 11/14 Allsop 1

Card Sort Once you have your notecards, you must sort them. Write out each of the following topics, one each, on a blank notecard: Description of Occupation, Job Duties, Education and Training. Go through your cards and place each in one of the three categories. USE YOUR DETAILED OUTLINE to help you decide. When in doubt, ask. Cards sorted by major topic A: 11/17 B: 11/16 Once your initial sort is done, you will refine it. Using your DETAILED OUTLINE, take your cards for the major topic and sort them by SUBTOPIC (the capital alpha topics.) Do this by writing out each capital alpha subtopic on a blank notecard for each major topic. Then, sort the cards into the subtopics. You may find you need to resort as you go. You may find you need to research information you now see is missing. Complete your research, get everything checked and signed, and move on. Any additional topics you may have can be added after that with my permission. From this point on, keep your cards in order. Cards sorted by subtopic A: 11/17 B: 11/16 Rough Works Cited WORKS CITED. Take your bibliography cards. These should have already been checked by me. Put them in correct order and build your rough works cited page. I would like you to include the parenthetical citation format on your rough for each source. However, DO NOT include the parenthetical citation format on the works cited on the final. Rough Works Cited page is complete A: 11/21 B: 11/20 Rough Outline You are ready to create your rough outline. THE BETTER YOUR OUTLINE IS THE EASIER YOUR PAPER WILL BE TO WRITE AND CITE. Take your time and do things correctly. Use your class outline as a guide. Roman numerals (I, II, III) will identify major topics; capital alphas (A, B, C) will identify sub topics within each major topic; numerals (1, 2, 3) will identify specifics under each subtopic; lowercase alphas (a, b) will identify additional info under each specific. YOU MUST COVER ALL SUBTOPICS AND SPECIFICS I GAVE YOU. You may have others; place them in the appropriate category. You may not have lowercase alpha topics; that s ok. As a rule, though, you should have at least 2 of the specifics (numerals) and additional info (lower case alphas). Your cards should be arranged according to major and subtopics Allsop 2

Begin writing your outline as instructed in class. DO NOT attempt the outline without instruction. Remember that this is a complete sentence outline and that you will use parenthetical citation (source pagination) in your rough outline. BE SURE TO WRITE DOWN YOUR CARD SOURCE AND NUMBER for each support. ALSO INCLUDE THE CORRECT PARENTHETICAL CITATION ON YOUR OUTLINE FOR EACH PIECE OF BORROWED INFORMATION. This will be a huge help to you. Rough Outline done A: 12/4 B: 12/1 Motivator, thesis, and blueprint done A: 12/4 B: 12/1 Rough Draft Please do not begin writing without instruction. Begin writing (Hooray! You re in the final stretch now.) You know this part. You are building your paper paragraph by paragraph, and you know exactly what to put in and how to structure it. Let s return to your introduction. You know there should be two subtopics: A Motivator, B Thesis and blueprint. (Include this section in your final outline). What would make a good motivator for your paper? We will do the thesis together, and your blueprint will list your major topics. Now, move through your outline writing your paper paragraph by paragraph. REMEMBER: I.G.C.E. for each piece of info! Remember the specifics in Ch. 23. ALSO, YOU MUST CITE and use parenthesis when you bring in borrowed information. This includes source and pagination information = (source pagination). You should already have the correct format on your outline. When you have questions, consult me. Remember everything you ve already learned: each new subtopic needs to be a new paragraph (although you may need to paragraph more often depending on the amount of info you have). Remember that each new paragraph needs a new topic sentence that has a transition, reminder of the thesis, and states the main idea of THIS paragraph. YOU MUST COVER THE INFORMATION FROM THE OUTLINE I GAVE YOU IN CLASS, IN THAT ORDER. Rough draft paper complete and at least 6 pages typed or the equivalent hand written, doublespaced A: 12/12 B: 12/11 Allsop 3

Final Works Cited Finalize your works cited page. Are you certain each entry is correct for the type of source it is? Is the list alphabetized? Does it have EVERY source used in your paper? Have you added or removed any sources you didn t actually use in your paper? Have you removed parenthetical citation formats from the works cited page? Final works cited page complete A: 12/21 B: 12/21 Final Outline Time to finalize. Return to your outline. Does it reflect what you did in your paper rough draft? Create your final outline; IT SHOULD MATCH EXACTLY WHAT YOU HAVE DONE IN YOUR WRITTEN PAPER. DO NOT INCLUDE NOTECARD NUMBERS OR PARENTHETICAL CITATION IN THE FINAL OUTLINE. Remember that this is a complete sentence outline. Do not put topic sentences in your outline. Final outline complete A: 12/21 B: 12/21 Final Body of Paper Finalize your paper. This is the whole enchilada. Did you actually cite information form at least 5 sources? If not, your paper is in failing status. Do you have 6 pages (full pages), typed (no larger than 12 font, 1 margins, double spaced) in a simple font, with ONLY 1 inch margins? ANYTHING less, your paper is in failing status. Is the structure of each paragraph correct according to what you learned in this class? Have you introduced information correctly? If you used someone else s EXACT words, are they in quotes? If not, your paper is in failing status. Did you give credit for ideas, and paraphrasing? DID YOU USE YOUR PARENTHETICAL CITATIONS CORRECTLY for the type of source? If not, your paper is in failing status. Did you edit for mechanics: spelling (spell check WILL NOT save you), punctuation, grammar? Final body of paper complete A: 12/21 B: 12/21 Title Page Don t forget your title page (something easy!) Follow the book example. Put the due date as the date on the title page. Title page complete A: 12/21 B: 12/21 Allsop 4

FINAL SUBMISSION Submission: This is due by the end of the day 12/21/17 OR 12/22/17 if school is in session. NO PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER 12/21/17 OR 12/22/17 if school is in session at the end of my school day. If you are leaving early for winter break, you should submit your paper BEFORE YOU LEAVE. When you submit, make sure you have ALL of the following: o Bundle 1: all 150+ signed notecards NUMBERED FROM 1 THROUGH 150 (OR HOWEVER MANY YOU HAVE); rough outline, rough body, rough works cited pate. If not, your paper is in failing status. o Bundle 2: Final title page, final outline, final body, final works cited. Be certain your name appears on each page. If not, your paper is in failing status. o Turn in to me personally for a signature. If you cannot turn it in to me personally, you should be worried. Slipping it under my door, having someone else do it, giving it to your brother- all bad ideas. Work on schedule and you can give this to me yourself. Otherwise, it may be in failing status. All final materials received Due 12/21/17 OR 12/22/17 if school is in session CONGRATULATIONS! You re done! Relax and enjoy your break! Submission completed: Student Instructor Date Allsop 5
