Name 5th Grade English Summer Reading Matilda is a sweet young girl who loves to read and learn, but her parents and brother don t. They think she s practically an alien from outer space, so Matilda finds happiness in books at the library. Longing for school, Matilda is unprepared for Miss Trunchbull, the kid-hating headmistress. What will happen to Matilda, Miss Honey and all of her classmates in Roald Dahl s whimsical story? You ll just have to read it and see for yourself! After you read the book, answer this question If you could have a power, like Matilda s, that could help solve problems for the people you love, what power would you like to have and how would you use it? Think about it for a few moments, and then write a three paragraph essay. Paragraph 1 - Tell me about Matilda s power and how she used it in the book. Then, in one sentence, tell me about your power and how you think it might make your life, and those of your friends and family, easier. Paragraph 2 - Write a three or four sentences telling me about a typical day with this power. How would you use it and who would you help? Be descriptive. Make me want to read your essay! Paragraph 3 Conclusion. Wrap up your essay with two or three sentences by repeating the power you would like to have and some of the things you might do with it. Think of a good ending sentence that summarizes your essay. You may type this essay on the computer, or write it out by hand either in cursive or neat printing. Have a parent read it over to make sure I can read your words. Use proper punctuation and capitalization in your essay, and be sure to spell all words correctly. /5 points for a strong introduction paragraph that grabs my attention. /5 points for a good body paragraph that describes your power and the people you would help, taking us through your day to day activities and using excellent descriptive adjectives. /5 points for a strong conclusion that sums up your essay and repeats you power and some of the ways you might use it. /5 points for neatness and correct punctuation, spelling, and capitalization.
Name Mrs. Haywood 5 th Grade English Summer of Wonder Wonder, by R.J. Palacio, is a story about a boy who was born with a serious facial deformity that prevented him from going to school until now. He is about to enter the fifth grade at a small private school and he is more than a little anxious about whether or not the other students will accept him. Your assignment is to read the novel and then answer the 6 questions on the attached sheet. Use complete sentences and write neatly. Answer ALL PARTS of the question for full credit. Your work will be graded using the following checklist: On time Complete answers Total / 3 pts / 12 pts / 15 pts This assignment is due the first day of school. Begin your answers on the following page.
1. Think about this quote: Okay, so he is the kind of kid who s one way in front of grown-ups and another way in front of kids? (Auggie s mom, p.34) What does this quote say about the character Julian? Have you ever experienced a person who is nice in front of parents and teachers, but mean to kids? Have you ever acted this way? 2. Do you think Julian is being intentionally hurtful? What might be going on in Julian s life to make him behave the way he does?
3. The phrase unconditional love and support, means that you are caring and loving to someone no matter what. Who are some of the people in Auggie s world who give him unconditional love and support? How do they do this? Give examples and text evidence to support your answer. 4. Who are some of the characters who were not nice to Auggie at first, but then had a change of heart and became supportive? What types of support did they give?
5. Not all hurtful behavior is bullying. Give an example from the book where someone was hurtful and didn t mean to be. 6. Read Mr. Browne s Precepts from page in the book. Pick your favorite. Write a short explanation of what it means and why you chose it.
