1 Name: Teacher: Class: Date: For every claim you make in your writing, you are required to prove your point. Your opinions and generalizations need factual detail (evidence) to support them. This is called Supporting Evidence. When you cite specific examples from the novel in your essays, you are including supporting evidence. Fill in the lines below citing a specific example for each aspect of a Dystopia. Below each example, include a quote of supporting evidence, and then a 2 sentences of analysis explaining how each example supports the idea of the society in your novel being a Dystopia. Learning Target: Example: I. Economy II. Ecology

2 III. Politics IV. Technology V. Conformity VI. Disharmony

3 Name: Teacher: Class: Date: The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, Divergent, Legend, Matched, and Uglies are all referred to as dystopian novels. In a well-written analysis, using proper MLA formatting to cite your quotes (Author s Last Name + Page #), discuss the following writing prompt. Choose three aspects of a Dystopian society (Economy, Ecology, Politics, Technology, Conformity, Disharmony) and discuss how your novel includes each by citing specific examples from the text. Analyze how these attributes truly make your society a Dystopia. The objective for this writing task is to construct a well-developed Outline for an essay. A majority of the essay will be included in this outline, but some pieces will be left out. An essay is only as strong as the bones, so you will be outlining all major aspects of an essay. Please follow the format below. I. Introduction: Write out a complete introduction for your essay. Use complete sentences and DO NOT forget any of the following components: Title, author s name, necessary background information, the theme of dystopia in relationship to your novel, and the THESIS!!! II. Body Paragraph #1: Dystopian Aspect #1 2. Supporting Evidence #1: Include correct MLA Formatting + Proper Parenthetical Citations Example: (Collins 35).

4 3. Analysis #1: Offer analysis on Supporting Evidence #1 4. Analysis #2: Offer analysis on Supporting Evidence #1 5. Concluding Sentence: Needs to transition to next paragraph II. Body Paragraph #2: Dystopian Aspect #2 2. Supporting Evidence #1: Include correct MLA Formatting + Proper Parenthetical Citations 3. Analysis #1: Offer analysis on Supporting Evidence #1 4. 6 I. Introduction: Write out a complete introduction for your essay. Use complete sentences and DO NOT forget any of the following components: Titles, author s name, necessary background information, the theme in relationship to the plays, and the THESIS!!! Extraordinary abilities are typically celebrated, except when those abilities are a threat to the ruling government. In Dystopian societies, the government strives to strip people of their individuality and harness a stringent control over their population. In Harrison Bergeron, by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., the protagonist is oppressed because of his extreme intellect and strength, which are threatening to the ruling power. The citizens are handicapped for their exceptional abilities and are heavily monitored to prohibit revolutions. The loss of individuality and the way the government controls its people and uses technology to survey and monitor the citizens reinforces that the world Harrison is living in is a dystopia. II. Body Paragraph #1: 1 st Dystopian element in your novel In Harrison Bergeron, the citizens are given handicaps to oppress individuals so everyone is the same. 2. Supporting Evidence: Include correct MLA Formatting + Proper Parenthetical Citations (last name #). They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody (Vonnegut 1). 3. Analysis #1: Offer analysis on Supporting Evidence The handicapper general is in charge of making sure that all citizens are equal, even though they were not created that way. 4. Analysis #2: Offer analysis on Supporting Evidence Individuals abilities are a potential threat to a government that thrives off being the supreme power. If any one individual or a group of individuals were allowed to live to their full potential, they would be capable of rebelling against the government. 5. Concluding Sentence: Needs to transition to next paragraph Just like applying handicaps to sustain conformity, the Handicapper General also uses technology to further control the society.
