1 F P H S L E S SON PLAN LESSON: 9.23 Student-Led Conference I CONTENT OBJECTIVE 1. Identify the purpose and format of a Student-Led Conference. 2. Student will be able to answer the Franklin Pierce Schools Essential Questions. LANGUAGE OBJECTIVE 1. Student has identified evidence to present / show at Student-Led Conference. MATERIALS/HANDOUTS Student Portfolios Planning a Student-Led Conference Worksheet (prep document) SLC Schedule Student-Led Conference Evaluation Rubric (portfolio requirement) ACTIVITY Background: The Student-Led Conference is the centerpiece of the year. The theme for 9 th Grade is IT S ALL ABOUT ME. Explain that during the SLC students will be able to answer the Franklin Pierce Schools Essential Questions: LEARNER: What am I working on to succeed? PLANNER: What do I want for my life? CITIZEN: What do I have to offer myself and the world? a. Distribute the Planning a Student-Led Conference Worksheet to each student and review the first page. Explain when and where conferences will be held, and what role students will play in inviting their families (there is a family invitation letter on the last page of the worksheet, if you wish to use it). Give students the opportunity to prepare by completing the outline in the handout. b. Explain how course registration will be handled during conferences and how students will be evaluated for their presentations. This will be explained by Counseling Center, ask lead advisory if you have questions. c. Give students the opportunity to prepare by completing the outline in the handout. Remind them that they have at least one more advisory lesson to prepare. 2 PLANNING A STUDENT-LED CONFERENCE The Student-Led Conference is your chance to share your progress this year with your advisor and your family. You ll use your Portfolio to answer the Franklin Pierce Schools 9 th grade Essential Questions: Learner: What am I working on to succeed? Planner: What do I want for my life? Citizen: What do I have to offer myself and the world? The Student-Led Conference is truly student-led: that means YOU are in charge. It s up to you to prepare well, introduce your family and advisor, lead the discussion, and conclude the conference. HOW WILL THE STUDENT-LED CONFERENCE WORK? Here is a checklist of what you ll need to do before and during your conference. Invite your guests. Following your advisor s instructions, invite your family for the date and time you ve been assigned. Plan what you want to say. Using the outline on the next page, plan what you want to say during your conference. Plan both what you ll say and what you ll show from your Portfolio. Practice, practice, practice! You ll have some time in advisory to practice for your conference, but you should also practice on your own. Get a friend to listen and ask you questions. Dress and behave appropriately. Plan to wear dress clothes to your conference. You want to look and act your best. Appearance and grooming is important so make sure your clothes are prepared. Be prompt and prepared. Make sure you arrive on time for your conference, and make sure you have your portfolio with you. Be polite. Start your conference by introducing your guests to your advisor. End your conference by thanking them for taking the time to attend. Be passionate. This conference is your chance to share who you are and what you want to get out of school with your advisor and your guests. Make eye contact, have acceptable posture, display confidence, and show preparation. It is important that you use appropriate voice quality, grammar and that you pace yourself, don t rush! Reflect on your conference. After your conference, use the Conference Evaluation Rubric to reflect on how you did. Your advisor will complete one and will share your rating with you. Let your advisor know what you think. After your conference, you may be asked to complete an anonymous survey to share your thoughts about the conference. Prep Revised
3 HOW SHOULD YOU ORGANIZE YOUR STUDENT -LED CONFERENCE? Here s a sample outline for a Student-Led Conference. You don t need to cover every point in this outline. Instead, use it as a guide. Take notes on the next page. You ll have about 12 minutes for your conference. Plan to speak for about 10 minutes and leave the rest of the time for introductions and questions. INTRODUCTION Introduce your guests to your advisor. Introduce yourself (even if you know everyone). PROVIDE PERSONAL DESCRIPTON AND EXPLAIN THE PURPOSE OF THE CONFERENCE o Who you were? o Who you are? o Who you want to be? LEARNER (What am I working on to succeed?) You should show and discuss items from your Portfolio Discuss your classes and teachers, share student selected classwork and explain why they were selected. (Evidence of Work) Discuss which classes have you enjoyed and which are the most challenging? (Transcript / Credit Check) Explain your plans to improve academically. (Goals) Discuss the classes you plan to take next year and review your course registration form. (Four- Year Plan) Discuss how assessments may be related to high school course choices. (Assessments) PLANNER (What do I want for my life?) You should show and discuss items from your Portfolio What do you want to do after high school? (High School & Beyond Plan) What are your interests? (Interest Assessment) Describe your career goal. (Employability Skills) Explain how your career exploration is preparing you for your post-secondary plan. (Career Research) CITIZEN (What do I have to offer myself and the world?) You should show and discuss items from your Portfolio Discuss what s most important to you: o Any school involvement. (Extracurricular Activities) o Any participation in the community. (Volunteer Service) Explain how your activities are preparing you for your post-secondary plan. CONCLUSION Provide a short summary statement on how the portfolio process can help contribute to your high school journey. Listen carefully to their questions and answer respectfully and as completely as you can. THANK YOUR GUESTS FOR ATTENDING YOUR CONFERENCE Prep Revised
