1 Eighth Grade Narrative Writing Prompt: Sweiss, Language Arts Write your own Survival Narrative. Step 1: Brainstorming: Survival Experiences: Quick Description I will write about

2 Narrative Writing: (General Overview) What is Narrative Writing? (narrative = root word = narrate = to tell a story) Narrative writing is writing that tells a story and includes elements of fiction, like characters, setting, plot, conflict, theme, and point of view. Essential Elements of Narrative Writing: Event or Occasion: What are you writing about that is significant to share? Characters (protagonist, antagonist, static, dynamic, main, and minor characters) Setting (when- day, week, year, historical time period) and (where- city, state, country, building, location, geographic region, landscape) Conflict (internal- man vs. self) or (external- man vs. man, nature, machine, supernatural, nature, society, etc.) Theme What is the lesson or moral of your story? Point of View (First, Second, Third Limited, Third Omniscient, or Third Objective) Plot (Exposition, Rising, Action, Climax, and Resolution or Denouement) Voice: Voice is the magical heard quality in writing. Voice is what allows the reader s eyes to move over silent print and hear the writer speaking. Voice is the quality in writing, more than any other, that makes the reader read on, that makes the reader interested in what is being said. We return to the columns, articles, poems, books we like because of the writer s individual voice. Gretchen Courtney Workshop, 2008

3 Narrative Writing: (Stages of Writing) 1. Brainstorming: What will you write about? (The more specific, the better ) What will the moral or theme of your story be? What was the important lesson learned? Imagine how you will write your beginning, middle, and end? Organize the structure of your essay (use the graphic organizer) 2. Draft Number 1: Using the graphic organizer as a guide, write your first draft. Use paragraphs. Use voice! 3. Revise: Reread what you wrote, examining one sentence at a time, then examine the overall structure of each paragraph, and finally the overall structure of the entire essay. Ask yourself the following: Do my ideas flow smoothly? Do I have a variety of short and long sentences? Have I implemented voice strategies to make my writing more interesting? Do I have a solid and interesting introduction? Is there a theme that comes through by the end of the essay? 4. Edit and Proofread: Examine each sentence for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Do I have any run-on sentences? Is the first word of each sentence capitalized? Did I indent each paragraph? 5. Publish: Share your writing with a friend, a family member, a teacher, or the world
