3 Introduction U.S. Map Adventures offers students in grades 4 8 the opportunity to practice mapmaking skills by drawing state maps using grids. Each outline map is presented on a small grid, and the student s job is to enlarge and reproduce the map by transferring it to a larger grid. Step-by-step instructions direct the student through the process of drawing the map s outline and adding details such as physical features, cities, bordering states, countries, bodies of water, etc. Procedures for lettering the labels and coloring the map are also suggested. The U.S. Map Adventures book is ideal for use in independent projects. The finished maps enhance students reports or independent projects and are excellent for classroom display. The creative classroom teacher will find myriad uses for the maps in the study of cartography, geography, U.S. or state history, or current events. The activities stand alone or complement any social studies curriculum. Students will build skills in a wide variety of areas including report writing; map reading; hand/eye coordination; scale drawing; lettering; research; and use of reference tools such as the atlas, encyclopedia, and Internet. How to Use This Book Before enlarging a state map, the student will need a copy of the small grid map of that state (pages 6 55), a copy of the larger empty grid (page 74; page 75 for even larger maps), and a copy of the instructions on page 4. A map is enlarged by carefully reproducing the smaller map, block by block, onto the larger grid, according to the directions on page 4. For example, a student might look first at block A1 on the smaller map and draw it to scale in block A1 on the larger grid, proceeding in this fashion until the entire map s outline has been completed. Once the state s outline is completed, details can be added by referring to the instructions and suggestions on page 4. 4 Directions for Enlarging a Map Mapmaking is a tricky task. Follow these simple directions, and you can easily enlarge the scale of a map. First, locate a block on the map that contains part of the outer boundary. Find that same block on the larger, empty grid. Sketch the part of the border you find in that block on the blank grid. A 1 A B B C 2 Continue this process until each section of the border has been drawn on the larger grid. Sketch lightly so you can erase if you need to. When you are satisfied with the accuracy of your map, trace over the entire border with a fine-tipped marker or dark-colored pencil. Suggestions for Adding Finishing Touches Once you have finished drawing the outline of your map, complete it by adding details suggested by your teacher, such as the following: capital city lakes mountains 2 bordering bodies of water bordering countries major rivers major cities landmarks bordering states deserts Label your map as follows, using different styles of lettering to tell the features apart: The name of the state is printed in all capital letters. Example: IDAHO The name of the city has a capital letter at the beginning, followed by lowercase letters. Example: New Haven The names of hills, mountains, oceans, and lakes are printed in all capital letters, but slanted. Example: BLUE LAKE The name of a river follows the flow of the river. The first letter of each word in the name is capitalized and the rest are lowercase. Example: San Juan River San Juan River After labeling your map, color it carefully with colored pencils. Color neatly and in one direction. The color blue is reserved for bodies of water.
