Scrapper s Guide Digital Scrapper March 2010 Take me to the Premier members area
Welcome to the March 2010 Digital Scrapper Premier! S-T-R-E-T-C-H Yourself! This last month has been a time of growth for me because I made a decision that I was going to stop making excuses and press forward to learn new skills! I certainly have felt challenged and stretched, but it s also been very exciting to be making progress in some Photoshop and Illustrator skills that I ve wanted to master. I love this quote by Gary Ryan Blair: Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow, and you will never reach your full potential. Since you re a Premier member, you re already putting this into practice. You re stretching yourself by learning new Photoshop or Photoshop Elements skills. You re learning: Better ways of doing things Shortcuts to help you work faster New ways to use existing tools Page design inspiration How to create some scrapbook items yourself I just want to congratulate you this month for your dedication to excellence. If you re able, try to find the time to watch the videos each month, because skills improve faster when they re used consistently. I ll be here rooting for you and learning right along with you! Masking Madness Our main focus this month is using layer masks. Ooh-la-la! In lesson 1, we ll use multiple layer masks to colorize a black and white photo. (It s really fun!) In lessons 2 and 3, I share some of my favorite ways to use layer masks. I have to admit I m a layer mask addict! I use them often because they make scrapbooking so much easier for me. I hope you get inspired to use them, too. And finally, in lesson 4, Jenny Binder will share a design that will help you fit lots of photos in a classy, twopage layout! Love and scrapbooking success, Linda Sattgast
Top Picks - February 2010 Love You Always by Amanda Rockwell Love was definitely in the air, and in our Premier gallery, during the month of February. I loved all the wonderful layouts I found there, many showcasing a special loved one. The layout on the right, created by mom2bandc, is this month s top pick. Don t you love that striking photo of her son? What a dashing young man he is. I love the way mom2bandc used the glitter strokes to create a frame for this wonderful photo. The folded overlay technique on the letter H works so well to draw our eye to the word, and the heart and swirls are a great accent for the jaunty hat! Thanks mom2bandc for sharing this fun layout with us. And thanks to our other top picks for your inspirational pages. Top Pick Page by mom2bandc mom2bandc says: Can t say enough wonderful things about this shabby/ chic Premier kit: Love you Always by Amanda Rockwell. This is one of my favorite photos taken of my son several years ago. Now as a teenager he won t even let me take his picture! barb_b connieg Used the folded overlay technique on the letter H and also adjusted the color. I resized and added shadows to everything but the background. Used the rectangular shape tool to make the red frame and then clipped paper to it. Happy Valentines Day everyone! 5 Meet our March 2010 Premier Designer: Miss Mint My name is Pamela, but I m probably best known in the digital scrapbooking world as Miss Mint - the owner and lead designer at www. peppermintcreative.com. My professional background in graphic design and copywriting was the perfect starting point for designing digital scrapbooking products, so when I accidentally stumbled upon it 4 years ago, it was love at first click. I jumped in head first and learned along the way, building my own store while attempting to master this new medium at the same time. Now I spend my days (and sadly most of my nights) in my jammies under the glare of my monitor uttering profanities at Photoshop as it unexpectedly shuts down on me mid-design. It s truly the best job I ve ever had. You can also find my designs on Scrapblog.com where I m thrilled to be a featured designer, and thanks to my fantastically talented design team, layouts and projects featuring my designs have appeared in numerous national and international magazines, and idea books. Most recently I m so excited to be designing a line of rubber stamps exclusively for StampingBella.com called ScrapInk Stamps by Miss Mint. When I am not working (which is never), I am usually pretending to be a photographer. Click here to find more of Miss Mint s beautiful kits at peppermintcreative.com To learn more about Miss Mint, check out her blog here.
March 2010 Lucky Ducky This month s inspiring collection of 16 QuickPages (7 double-page spreads plus a front and back cover) can be downloaded along with the Premier Kit and will allow you to complete a beautiful album of your own in no time at all! Watch a video on how to use templates.

Video Lesson 1 Video Lesson 2 Colorize Black & White Photos Hide & Show Masks by Linda Sattgast Make a special black and white photo look painted or turn it into glorious color with these easy techniques. By using layer masks you ll be in total control of the process, with the ability to make changes if you feel the paint needs some adjustment. Heritage Photo: Photographer Unknown by Linda Sattgast Whenever you want to hide part of a layer or show a special effect on part of a layer, you need a layer mask. If you haven t been taking advantage of this fabulous tool, get ready to be inspired as I show you some of my favorite ways to use layer masks! 11 Video Lesson 3 Gradient Mask Video Lesson 4 A Two-Page Event by Linda Sattgast A layer mask is a powerful yet easy-to-use tool, but when you pair a layer mask with a gradient, you can do even more amazing things! I ll show you three examples of using gradients with masks to jump-start your imagination! Page and Photos: Linda Sattgast Kit: Lucky Ducky by Miss Mint Font: Myriad Pro by Jenny Binder When you take lots of photos for events like birthdays, holidays or outings, it helps to have an easy way to fit those photos artistically onto a twopage spread. In this lesson, you ll learn the process of creating a multi-photo two-page spread that looks terrific! 12 Extra Tidbits The Versatile Layer Mask by Linda Sattgast I use layer masks so often that it s just second nature for me, but if you re not used to using them, you might wonder, Why the fuss? It s true that most of the time I use layer masks for convenience rather than true necessity, but there are two things I consider very important: My time, and the ability to change my mind. A layer mask will often save me time, but even more than that, it isn t permanent. No pixels are destroyed or erased, so I can change my mind at any time and do something different. Wave Filter Settings In case you want to try out this effect on one of your own photos, here are the Wave Filter settings I used: Take an ordinary photo with a stroke outline and apply a Wave filter to it. Yikes! Great edges, but it trashes the image. Undo, and this time, get the Rectangular Marquee tool. Draw a selection outline slightly inside the photo. Create a mask* with white inside the outline and black everywhere else. Apply the Wave filter to the mask to get great edges without distortion! *Watch this month s videos to learn how to apply a mask.
