Scrapper s Guide Digital Scrapper Premier July 2010 Take me to the Premier members area
Welcome to the July 2010 Digital Scrapper Premier! Welcome to the jazzy month of July! It s a great month to have a family reunion at the beach, which is exactly what I m going to do this month. Ahhhh! I can see it now food, food, and more food, playing games late into the night, sunset walks along the beach all the traditional activities we ve come to expect and love! And pictures. Lots of picture taking. Is it any surprise that I m the chief photographer at all our family events? If it wasn t for me we would have almost NO photos of our family reunions, showing how the cousins have grown year by year. That s one reason I m so excited to introduce this month s videos and kits. No, I didn t make a mistake using the plural of kit we have two kits for you this month with a seaside theme. One is classic and shabby, and the other is whimsical and bright, so no matter your style, you should find plenty to enjoy. Please Note: A few of the elements in the Seaside Vacation Kit are culled from past kits, but the majority of the kit is brand new. The Beach Bound kit is entirely new. Can You Top June? Last month we had a lot of action in the Digital Scrapper Premier Forum with many of you trying out the techniques from the June videos. I saw comments like: Great learning experience! Thank you ScrappersGuide. It was fun to make a French board! This lesson was easier than I thought it would be. I am really enjoying this (texture) technique! I think you ll find that actually doing the video lessons makes a big difference in how much you get out of Premier. So here s what you can expect in July: Jan Walker will wow you again with her tutorial on Expressive Eyes. Every special portrait deserves this treatment. Susie Roberts created a beautiful scrapbook album about the Scrapper s Guide Retreat we had last December. She used two very cool techniques on her pages, which she will reveal in her tutorials this month. Jenny Binder will help you give your scrapbook page a twist to add interest, and then she ll help you solve a problem that you re sure to run into at some time or another. So dive right in. Summer is a great time to kick back and add a few notches to your Photoshop belt! Love and scrapbooking success, Linda Sattgast
Top Picks - June 2010 Cherish This Moment by Digital Scrapper Designs Decisions, decisions! There were so many top quality pages and textured photos that I absolutely could have chosen any number of pages to place on my Top Pick page. Thank you all for sharing so many truly inspiring pages! I chose BAlex as my Top Pick for the sheer beauty of the photo, the color overlay, and simple elegance of the page. I enjoyed the extra little touches such as adding back a little bit of color to the cheeks and lips, placing some text inside the photo, and using a stroke outline on the flourish. It s simply an exquisite page! Do yourself a favor and check out the many other fine examples of the June kit and video tutorials in the Scrapper s Guide Gallery. Top Pick Page by BAlex I finally found some time to sit down and play with this tutorial. I knew I wanted to use this photo but finding the right paper was difficult. I had to do some color manipulation to get what I wanted. Also the blending process worked best with a sepia tone and a little cheek color added back in along with burning of the eyes and dodging of the whites. I m happy with it!. breek1147 dimorr fox57 Congratulations to the other top picks, pictured here in alphabetical order. 6 Getting to know... Eva Kipler Hi! My name is Eva Kipler. I live in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with my husband and three wonderful children, ages 18, 15, and 11, who inspire me and provide me with a seemingly endless amount of creativity and ideas. My husband, who is a U.S. Naval officer, is often deployed overseas, so the vast majority of my time is spent with my children and our rambunctious three-year-old goldendoodle dog, Lola. I love to make a bold statement with my designs, and it usually comes through in my color choices. My design style is considered to be traditional, as it resembles products you can purchase in paper scrapbooking. I grew up in Santa Fe, and while a student at New Mexico State University, I joined the United States Navy on a whim for a five year enlistment. I wanted to see the world and I certainly did! For over 2 years I was stationed in Wales and then in Scotland for a year. During those years abroad, I traveled at every opportunity I had. Oktoberfest in Germany was one of my favorites! My last duty station was Virginia Beach, Virginia, where I met and married the man of my dreams. In 1993 my enlistment was fulfilled, and instead of re-enlisting, I decided to return to college to finish my degree. In 1998 I completed my bachelor s degree in accounting and graduated Magna Cum Laude. I have been a stay-at-home mom since our last child was born. In my free time I spend quite a bit of time on the computer and on the internet. The discovery of digital scrapbooking was certainly a turning point for me. I am now able to contribute financially to our household while working at home! Being a digital designer is definitely a true fit for me. I have an outlet for my artistic creativity and am here when my children need me. With my husband often deployed, working out of the house makes things so much easier, and the best thing is that I love my work! 14 Getting to know... Susie Roberts SG: How long have you been involved in digital scrapbooking? Susie: Officially, using Photoshop, since Before then, I used Microsoft Publisher to create my own cards. SG: Like so many other digi-scrappers, did you start out paper scrapping? Susie: I went along to a rather uninspiring paper scrapping introductory class at a neighbour s house once. I decided then that I would only ever do this on the computer. But at the time, I just wasn t sure how. SG: So how did you find out about digital scrapbooking? Susie: I searched the web and found Linda. I could not contain my excitement when I began learning from Linda s Learn Digital Scrapbooking CD and joined Premier. It was everything that I had been looking for and more. SG: Have you always been interested in art and photography? Susie: Yes! I owned a craft business called, Lilli Pilli Needlecraft for ten years during the 1980s and 90s. I taught embroidery, French hand and machine sewing, smocking, ribbon embroidery and later, folk art painting. Basically, you name it, I ve done it. SG: So what made you decide to move into digital scrapbooking? Susie: I just love photography and the notion of creating beautiful background pages to showcase them. It was a natural progression for me, and my crafty background has given me the design skills for my job with Scrapper s Guide. SG: What is your favorite scrapping subject?
Susie: Without a doubt, my family! I m so lucky to have two beautiful little nieces, Jessie 4 and Emily 2 who both love having their photo taken. It s just a shame that they live a whole day s drive away. Children inspire me the most because they are such natural models. My tutorial videos and creative team pages often feature photos of them. SG: Do you have children of your own? Susie: Yes! I have three! Two boys and a girl. They are all grown up now of course! Katie, my youngest has just turned 30. Yikes, where did all that time go? SG: Are they married? Susie: Jaime, the middle boy is the only one married but he and his wife are expecting a baby in November. Can you imagine how much fun I m going to have with a new grandchild to make pages about? SG: So what do you do in your spare time? Susie: What spare time? Well, in fact, I do get out occasionally. I play tennis and table tennis every week with friends so I don t seize up! My husband Carl and I live on the East Coast of Australia, an hour s drive North of Sydney. We walk every day at our favorite beach and spend time with family and friends on weekends. SG: What do you enjoy most about working with Scrapper s Guide? Susie: Apart from the actual teaching and designing, I love the camaraderie I have with the rest of the team. They are always kidding me about my Aussie accent, so we have a lot of fun. We all love working together, and I feel like they are my second family. It s the whole package!

Extra Tidbits Customized Photo Masks Susie Roberts Customize your own photo clipping masks using the brushes that come with this month s Seaside Vacation kit. This is a great technique for selectively choosing which parts of the photo you want revealed...especially useful for photos with cluttered backgrounds. The creative possibilities are endless. Step 1 Create a new layer above the background layer and name it Photo Mask. Step 2 Open the photo you want to use and drag it onto the layer above. Step 3 To group the photo layer and the photo mask layer together, position your cursor between the two layers, press the Alt key (Mac: Opt key) and click to create a clipping mask. Step 4 Get the Brush tool and click on the down-facing arrow in the Options Bar to open the Brush Picker. Click on the right-facing arrow to open the drop-down menu and choose Load Brushes. Navigate to the Overlay folder inside the Seaside Vacations kit, and double click on the Paint Stains brush set to load it in the Brush Picker. Step 5 In the Brush Picker choose Scratched Paint 7. Step 6 Ctrl Click (Mac: Cmd Click) on the thumbnail of the photo layer to get a selection outline. This will keep the mask within the photo area. Step 7 With the photo mask layer selected, and black as the Foreground color, begin stamping over the areas of the photo you want to appear. The more times you stamp in the same spot, the clearer the image will become. Step 8 Refine your mask by using the same brush with the Eraser tool to remove parts of the photo. Step 9 You can also increase or decrease the size of your brush by pressing the right or left bracket keys. Step 10 Once you have finished creating your photo mask, select both layers by clicking on one and Shift clicking on the other and press Ctrl E (Mac: Cmd E) to merge the two layers together.
