Premier May 2011 Take me to the Premier members area
Welcome to the May 2011 Digital Scrapper Premier! Call me crazy, but after only seven dance lessons, Charlie and I let our teacher talk us into entering a dance competition in the beginner level, of course. Having a goal to work toward has definitely made us more serious about practicing. Do you have a scrapbooking goal? A Premier member recently told me that every month she only managed to create a single page using one of the Premier tutorials, but after taking my Easy Page Design class and becoming more confident and faster at scrapbooking, she was going to challenge herself to make four Premier pages one for each tutorial. Having a goal is good. If you re more of a beginner, start small, like Charlie and I are with our dancing. We re sticking with waltz in the newcomer category. Maybe for you making ONE page would be a reasonable goal. If so, we have some great tutorials this month to tempt you! With our second video we re introducing a brand new instructor, Christina Rambo. Yay! We ll tell you more about her a little later on in this newsletter, but I think you ll really enjoy her tutorial about creating Ransom Note letters! In my video tutorial, I ll teach you how to turn artistic papers and elements from kits into brushes, which you will then use to create a fancy photo mask. And last, but not least, Susie Roberts will show you a very cool way to turn an old book into an elegant journaling mat for a heritage page. I know you ll enjoy watching the videos, but more than that. I hope you will set a goal for one or more pages you will create using the video techniques! Love and scrapbooking success, Jan Walker starts us out with a great way to fix photos with really dark shadows. You ll be able to rescue photos that were unusable before.
Top Picks - April 2011 Family Together Premier Kit Oooh, such beautiful pages this month! It looks like everyone really enjoyed working through the tutorials, as I saw a wide variety of wonderful pages featuring aged photos, textured overlays, silhouette titles and file folder memories. In looking through all of these, I chose this trillium layout by msrobin as this month s Top Pick. What an elegant page! Msrobin really draws our attention to this stunning floral photo by designing a clean, simple page and using lots of white space. Her final touch, a silhouetted title that actually overlays the photo, works so well here. Great job, msrobin! Top Pick Layout by msrobin Paper from kit Family Together by Lauren Grier. Frame from kit Escape to Nature by Eva Kipler. Tuts used are Silhouette Title by Jen White, and Old-New by Jan Walker. Fonts are Redstar and Impact. dimorr Groobers kschro4545 Congratulations to the other top picks, pictured here in alphabetical order. 5 Getting to know our designer... Joanne Brisebois I currently reside in Ontario, Canada with my husband, daughter, and two spoiled cats. We are also excitedly anticipating the arrival of our second child this May. For most of the year we keep ourselves busy with jobs and school, but always keep plans for a new family travel adventure in hand. Over the years we have had the opportunity to explore parts of Canada, the United States, the UK, Europe and Asia. We are hoping to add Australia to the list in the next few years to visit friends and relatives. My interest in digital scrapbooking began in the Fall of 2005 when we returned home from one of our first family travel adventures. With dozens of photos stowed away on the memory card of our first digital camera, I was looking for different ways to showcase these memories alongside the stories they inspired. A little online research lead me to the concept of computer scrapbooking as well as the program Photoshop Elements 4.0, and my new passion for digital scrapbooking and designing began. Alongside spending time with my family and traveling (both are my greatest source of inspiration) I enjoy writing, art, and photography -- all interests that I easily combine and explore through designing and scrapping. As a scrapper, I live by the philosophy: Try everything! Try coordinating kits, try mixing and matching totally different packs of elements and papers, try brushes, try photo masks, try single photo layouts, try multi photo layouts, try journaling-only layouts, try using new photos with heritage kits. I love taking on a good challenge, one that helps me grow as a designer and a scrapper. One of the things I appreciate most about digital scrapbooking is the undo button, which makes the idea of taking on new challenges so much less intimidating! Click here to find more beautiful kits by Joannne, available at Oscraps, and read more about Joanne on her blog here.

Getting to know our new instructor... Christina Rambo My name is Christina Rambo and I live in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. For the last ten years, I have been a full time middle school/high school art instructor in the public school system. In May 2011, I am expecting my first child, so, a few months ago, I turned in my letter of resignation. When baby arrives, I will be a stay at home mom! I look forward to raising my daughter and pursuing creative endeavors like photography, crafting, and digital scrapbooking. I have been scrapbooking since I was in middle school. I have bins full of scrapbooks! Before I became an education major, I studied Graphic Design which is when I started using Photoshop. I remember buying my first digital camera, editing pictures, and realizing I could make great pages on the computer! I found the process to be fast and fun. At that time I had no idea how big the world of digital scrapbooking was, so I was making papers and elements myself. When I discovered the broad online world of digital scrapping, I applied to some digital shops and started selling my designs. I am happiest when I am creating. I love to knit, crochet, sew, draw, paint, take photos, and decorate cakes. If I am not creating, I enjoy lazy mornings with coffee and conversation with my husband, or coffee while I read blogs, or coffee while I eat dessert. If there is coffee involved, I like it. I am soaking up these last few weeks of lazy mornings, because that will soon change with baby! Get to know Christina more at
Video Lesson 1 Video Lesson 2 Let There Be Light! Magazine Letters by Jan Walker Rescue images that are extremely dark or underexposed by using the often misunderstood Shadows/Highlights filter. Once you understand how to correctly use this filter, you ll be able to rescue many dark images you thought were a lost cause! Photo: Jan Walker Paper: Recollection Kit by Joanne Brisebois by Christina Rambo Love the look of ransom note style letters, but hate spending time browsing through a magazine for just the right colors and fonts? This lesson is for you! Using filters plus the Dodge and Burn tool, learn to create custom word art that looks like it was cut from a magazine. Learn to create brushes from kit papers and elements that you can apply to an ordinary photo mask to turn it into a work of art! 13 Extra Tidbit Type Overlay by Linda Sattgast Have you seen Lorem Ipsum type the Latin words that are used as fillers on graphic layouts? When creating a type overlay you can laboriously type a page of words, or you can use Lorem Ipsum, which is much faster, and then you don t have to worry about what to say! Here s how: Step 1: Go to the Lorem Ipsum Generator online at this URL: This site uses a dictionary of over 200 Latin words. It makes sure there is nothing embarrassing hidden in the middle of the text, that it s free from repetition, injected humor, non-characteristic words, etc. Step 2: Click on paragraphs and type the number of paragraphs you want. For a full page, you ll need 6 or 7 paragraphs. Check the box if you want to start with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet... which is the standard, highly recognizable phrase. I always deselect that option. Click on the Generate Lorem Ipsum button. Highlight all the generated type and press Ctrl C (Mac: Cmd C) to copy it. Step 3: Create a new scrapbook page with a white background. Get the Horizontal Type tool and click and drag a text box around the entire document from the upper, left corner to the lower, right corner. Press Ctrl V (Mac: Cmd V) to paste the text. Change the font, if you wish. I used P22 Cezanne. Adjust the leading (space between lines) if necessary. I also turned my paragraphs into one block of text. Press Enter to confirm the type. Step 4: Whenever you want type as a design element on your page, you re ready to rock and roll! Extra Tip: Select a portion of the type with the Rectangular Marquee tool and turn it into a Brush by choosing Edit > Define Brush On my layout I reduced the opacity of the type layer and used a layer mask to hide most of the type for a more subtle effect
