1 STACKED BOOKS PROJECT 2013 Taught by Laura A. DeVincentis Inspired by Robin Messenheimer, Big Island, Hawaii (Robinscraftroom.com) Supplies and Measurements needed for this project: (6) Six pieces 6-1/2 X 5-1/4 Lightweight chipboard thickness (you can also use the cardboard from Designer Series Paper packs) (6) Six Pieces 7-1/2 X 6-1/4 Designer Series Paper (DSP) - to cover the chipboard, cut two each of 3 designs. (6) Six Pieces 1 X 4-7/8 Lightweight Chipboard for Sides of Books (6) Six pieces 2" x 5-7/8" DSP for the sides of the books: (use coordinating paper from above); cut two each of 3 designs (3) Three 3 Pieces 6-1/2 X 3 DSP for the spine of each book: Can be coordinating DSP from sides of book or solid color cardstock coordinated with chosen DSP. (3) Three pieces 8 X 6-7/8 Lightweight Chipboard for Drawers. (3) Three pieces 1" X 6-1/2" Lightweight Chipboard for Drawer fronts. (3) Three pieces 2 X 7-1/2 DSP for drawer fronts (3) Three large brads or 3 stacks of buttons for faux drawer pulls Tools that you'll need: Simply Scored Scoring tool. Paper Cutter or Paper Trimmer Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks and/ or Jumbo Glue Dots Sticky Strip & Snail Adhesive (or permanent glue) 1/16 or 1/8 Paper Hole Punch or Paper Piercer Scissors or Paper Snips

2 Step 1: Put together your three sliding drawers: 1. Take one of 3 pcs. of lightweight chipboard measuring 8 X 6-7/8 and score at 1 on all four corners. 2. Next, take your paper snips and cut from point A to point B on all 4 sides. Fold in all scored sides towards the middle (as shown in Figure 1). Flip piece of chipboard over to right side. 3. Apply Sticky Strip in 2 rows of each 1 square on all four corners (Figure 2). 4. Start with one corner, peel your two rows of sticky strip and gently fold in along the score line in an L shape. Bring long edge up to meet this corner (Figure 3). 5. Continue on until all four corners are complete. Gently fold in all sides towards middle. Set drawer aside and complete the next two. 3 Step 2: Begin your book fronts: 1. Take each of your (6) Six pieces 6-1/2 X 5-1/4 Lightweight chipboard, glue wrong side of chipboard and adhere to the center of each of your (6) Six Pieces 7-1/2 X 6-1/4 Designer Series Paper (Figure A). Fold/ score paper up and over chipboard on all four edges. Unfold and notch out/ snip all four corners (Figure B). Adhere edges of paper up and over chipboard with glue, snail adhesive or sticky tape. Set aside (Figure C). Reverse these two steps Notch out all 4 corners Figure B Figure A Figure C Step 3: Put together your Book sides: 1. Take your (6) Six Pieces 1 X 4-7/8 Lightweight Chipboard and adhere one each to the center of each of your (6) Six pieces 2" x 5-7/8" DSP (Figures D & E). Score/ fold like book fronts and notch our all four corners. Take short end of DSP and glue/adhere to chipboard (Figure F). Turn piece over so that your DSP shows upright. Apply Sticky Tape on the top and bottom of your longer sided piece, and in between the paper edges and the edge of the chipboard (Figure G). Fold paper edges in towards other side. Set aside and complete your other five pieces. NOTE: Make sure you are using the coordinating DSP and having the side you want to show on the outside of your book sides.

Take 1 of your completed book fronts and 1 of your completed book sides. Peel tape from one edge of the book side and affix to wrong side of the short end of book front about 1/8 from the edge. Take matching book front cover and turn over to wrong side. Peel off tape from other end of book side and affix to loose book cover at exact same place as other one, about 1/8 from the edge on the short side (Figures 4-8). 2. Take a completed drawer and place inside, between both front covers (Figure 9). Take a pencil and mark a line of drawer on outside edge as a guideline (Figure 10). Take another piece of coordinated book side and peel tape, affix in center of marked line, again about 1/8 from the edge (Figure 11). Place top of book cover over drawer to eye placement, before peeling tape from top edge of book side (Figures 12-13). Peel tape and hover until you feel you are placing top of book cover over book side, centered and loose enough that your drawer will slide out without making it too tight (Figure 14). 3. Take drawer out and burnish taped book sides inside where they are adhered. 4. Put drawer back into book (Figures 15). 5. Take one piece of your (3) Three 3 Pieces 6-1/2 X 3 DSP and dry emboss. This is for the spine of your book (Figure 23). 6. Score this piece at ½ and 2-1/2 on the long sides of this paper. Fold scored lines towards wrong side (or what will be the insides) of your book spine. 7. Affix Sticky Tape (do not use glue or snail adhesive as you will need the strength) to the ½ scored areas of your spine on the wrong side. Peel one strip at a time and secure to the edge of the long side of your book. Flip book over and peel other strip of tape and secure to underside of book.

7 Step 5: Let s finish those drawers! 1. Take one piece of your (3) Three pieces 1" X 6-1/2" Lightweight Chipboard and glue or snail the wrong side of the chipboard down onto the opposite side of one of your (3) Three pieces 2 X 6-1/2 DSP in the center. Notch out the corners on all four sides and glue down the remaining edges of your paper to the chipboard (Figure 16). Note: Make sure the right side of your drawer front is showing and that it matches the sides of your coordinating book sides. 2. Affix Sticky tape to the wrong side of your drawer face front in two equal lines in the center of your piece about ½ from each edge (Figure 17). Peel both tape strips and take your drawer and place long side of front of drawer onto the center of drawer front, making sure to leave equal amounts of overlap of drawer front on each side (Figures 18-19). 3. Use your 1/16 paper punch or paper piercer and punch a hole in the center of your drawer front. Insert Brad for faux drawer pull (Figure 20) - OR do not punch a hole and simply hot-glue a stack of buttons in the middle of your drawer front. Slide your finished drawer(s) (Figure 21) into your coordinating finished book(s) (Figure 22). Figure 16 Figure 17 Figure 18 Figure 19

Hot-Glue 1 book a-skewed onto another book in the center space and use a large amount of glue. Slide out drawer and place hand over space inside your book box and hold for about a minute until the glue sets. Continue with your 3rd and final book by hot-gluing onto the top of the stacked books. 2. Embellish your stacked books as desired. 3. NOTE: make sure that your decorations do not prevent your drawers from opening. 4. Store 4 cards and envelopes into each drawer makes a great gift!
