Steve Waggoner: ( ), 545 Sprucewood, Fairbanks, AK [term expires in 2021]. Rockie Phillips: ( ), 455 Ramada Se., Fairbanks AK [term expires in 2021]. Alex Conners [ ], Tuffy Lane, Sterling, AK [term expires in 2020] Mark Cunningham: 4010 East Horn Way, Fairbanks, AK 99709, [term expires in 2020] Pat Reed: ( ), 1065 W. Holiday, Wasilla, AK 99645, [term expires in 2019]. ASMLA meeting at rendezvous Treasurer, Rob Bargewell reported healthy balances in the ASMLA checking account and in the savings account [which is actually the Booshway contingency fund]. Steve Waggoner was re-elected and Rockie Phillips elected to three-year terms as directors. On motion by Jim Anderson, approval to show ASMLA as the publisher of the series of books on Muzzle Loading History in Alaska that Keith Bayha is writing was passed. News from the Kenai by Alex Connors The small group of blackpowder shooters on the Kenai remains active. In August we held our first, hopefully not last, open fun shoot to include as many blackpowder shooters we knew of. We had a total of 12 shooters for the weekend, and not much rain. A special thank you to Jeff Brinegar & Bob Lochman for coming down from Anchorage for the weekend. Top shooter was Liam Berry, second place was Bob Lochman, third place was Alex Connors. The shoot was strictly for fun, and we hope to do another shoot again next year. A very big Thank You to Rob Bargewell for coming down a week before the shoot to present an NMLRA certified rangemaster course. John Clarke, Phil Nash, and Alex Connors successfully completed the course. Rob spent all of Saturday with us and drove down from Wasilla to present the class. His efforts were greatly appreciated. We continue to have monthly shoots on the second Saturday of the month at 10:00 am, rain or shine. In winter we shoot from inside a heated bldg- the real mountainman never had so good. The shoots are open to all. For more info, ph. Alex Memorial Day Rendezvous -- It was belatedly decided that Keith and Mary Mathis would booshway the 2018 edition of this event at Smitty s, mile 152 Glenn Highway. Due to lingering snow at Smitty s the booshways opted for switching to the Todd Hecker farm on Point McKenzie. The MMMLRC newsletter carried an account of the event complete with photos. Rob Bargewell will booshway in 2019 with Cal Pope as Segundo.
2 Alaska Territorial Keith Bayha ran his last Territorial at Fort Wick in June. Shooter turn out was a bit disappointing, but thanks to the efforts of a lot of folks it turned out okay for those who attended. But the revenues received left us a bit short for covering all expenses. Next year Rob Bargewell will be in charge and we expect things will improve. He has set the dates for June at Fort Wick. Changes include: There will no longer be a free aggregate if you purchase 5. The registration fee will be $10.00 for NMLRA and NRA members and each aggregate fee is $ The Sub-junior through Intermediate will still be $1.00 As in 2018, In addition to the traditional matches, there will be 2 provisional aggregates offered in There will be no awards for them. 1) Inline bench open sight. 2) Inline bench scoped. And there will be a table shoot as a re-entry shoot and as our own provisional shoot. The fee will be $3.00. Keith is working on an updated record book and will have it available soon. Let him know if you want a copy Alaska State Rendezvous Roger King retired from the US post Office before rendezvous and was gifted with a trip that forces his handing off many of the Booshway duties to his Segundo, Ed Wick. Roger continued to work on planning the event and did return about mid-week. MMMLRC newsletter carried an account of the event with photos. Keith and Mary Mathis will be booshway in 2020, with Jeff Binegar as Segundo and they are planning to hold it at the Todd Hecker farm on point McKenzie Alaska State Rendezvous Jennifer Hughes [Curt Staples daughter] stepped up to be Booshway for Curt will run the shooting program. As this is written has said it will be in July She is still hopeful that Chena Lakes site will be available but is also looking for a back-up site. Our spring newsletter will have the site firm. Her contact info is: ; 3346 Fernwood Ave., North Pole AK 99705; domey_j@hotmail.com Fall Rendezvous It was held at Fort Wick, with Ed Wick as Booshway. Attendance was down but the weather was great. Keith Mathis provided an account with photos in the MMMLRC newsletter. NMLRA = National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association -- If you need to renew your membership or are not yet a member, there are four Field Reps in Alaska who would be glad to assist you: Keith Bayha, W. Glenn Hwy, Sutton AK nohorn@gci.net Jim Baichtal, PO Box 19515, Thorne Bay AK baichtal@aptalaska.net Rob Bargewell, 7362 W. Parks Hwy. #504, Wasilla AK chiefw5@mtaonline.net Don Roher, PO Box 1707, Wrangle AK donroher@yahoo.com ASMLA's "Alaska Game Animal" Targets are Still Available In September we sold 100 target set to long-time member Billy Pearson of Palmer. The target set features 10 Alaska animals drawn by Ed Wick and Keith Bayha, consisting of: Wolf, Polar Bear, Walrus head and neck, Caribou, Musk Ox, Dall Sheep, Mountain Goat, Moose head and neck, 5 Ptarmigan, and 5 Snowshoe Hares. When we printed these targets back in 1995 we got the paper given to us at no charge. When we took delivery we found we had 3,000 sets. These are stored in my connex shed and it seems we still have two thirds of them. And since I front
3 ended the printing costs and would like to recover a least part of it. We have reduced the price to $2.50/set plus shipping, and inviting large orders. To order a bunch for your shoot, contact Keith Bayha ( ) or nohorn@gci.net. To save on shipping costs, consider how you might arrange to pick them up or have someone do it for you. ASMLA WebSite: Our website at < > has been undergoing an overhaul by our webmaster, Janet Bargewell. Let her know how much you appreciate her efforts. If you have good digital photos you would like to share by posting them here, them to Janet Bargewell at < janet_bargewell@yahoo.com > Charles Adkins passing: Upon returning from rendezvous we learned that 1985 Booshway and forever member of the Moosehiders Club in Fairbanks peacefully passed away in his recliner in New York state on July 23, We all share the sadness of the Adkins family and extend our sympathies. Charles was a mentor to many of us and brought his family to muzzleloading adventures. Chet Wolfe [Keith s brother-in-law] is currently battling cancer [acute lymphocytic leukemia and lymphoblastic lymphoma]. Beverly is in Nevada assisting him. Pray for them. News about the alternative WNS in Phoenix It appears that Bill Loughrigh has got something going to replace the NMLRA s canceled Western National Shoot. He has a new name and arrangement with Ben Avery Range. He has received $2000 in loans from individual shooters who support his efforts, and pledges of another $2000. See the flyer below for his initial announcement of this event. I expect we will hear more about this in the months to come. If you want to be receive any updates I get let me know. [KB] Coming Soon! History of Muzzle loading in Alaska by Keith Bayha This work is the result of three decades of data collection, updating, editing and re-editing, etc. It consists of seven volumes with various publication dates and types of bindings: Volume One: The Early Years Volume Two: Muzzle Loading Clubs in Alaska Volume Three: Alaska Territorial Muzzle Loading Match Records Book Volume Four: Alaska State and Regional Muzzle Loading Shoots Volume Five: History of Black Powder Rendezvous in Alaska Volume Six: Alaska Muzzle Loading Hunting Stories Volume Seven: Bio-Sketches, Gunsmiths, and Camp Names of Alaska Muzzleloaders [Third edition] Volume 7 has already been published and distributed as first edition and second edition. Soon there will be a third edition. Those who purchased the early editions are entitled to the additional up dates at not additional charge. The plan is to sell these volumes separately as they are completed at near the cost of publishing plus a small profit that will accrue to the ASMLA. Watch for announcements of their availability in future newsletters. Or you can let me know that you want them at any time as I will be building a list. [KB]
4 Note from Editor: ASMLA publishes two newsletters per year, spring and fall, and attempts to list all muzzle loading events we know of that are scheduled for the next six months or so. Keeping it around as a reference could save you a lot of time. If you have something you think should be added to this list let us know. Check the expiration date on your mailing label. If it is your turn, please fill out the form below and send in your $5/ year. We are still the best bargain around. Buy several years now before subscription rates go up! If your label has the word courtesy instead of an expiration date, this means you have been newly added to our mailing list or retained on our mailing list in hopes that you will find sufficient value in this newsletter to decide to join, or you are still active in muzzle loading and we have just not yet got your attention! If it says "welcome" you are receiving this issue because we recently got your address. We hope you will want to join ASMLA too. Check out our web site for more information on us. Warning: If your label reads last issue it means you are long past due [two years or more in arrears] and on the cusp of being culled from the ASMLA list. We really hate to cull the mailing list because history has shown that sometimes we get delinquent members back if we stay in touch. But there is a limit to everything. Some of you have been active and have been retained on our mailing list for years for that reason alone. This is the last issue you will receive unless you join or rejoin. And if you receive your newsletter via there is no mailing label and we have not devised a method of providing your expirations date. If you suspect you are in arrears contact Keith Bayha.
