& The Salvation Army

The Army & Air Force Guardsmen drill for disasters in a big way.

The Guardsman s toys are not too shabby. The Salvation Army provided smiles and sustenance via four canteen trucks, numerous autos, a communicat-- ions vehicle, and yes an ice truck loaded with 4,000 pounds of ice and frozen delights.

Thirty-six Salvation Army volunteers from the cities of Chicago, Peoria, Omaha, Lincoln, Indianapolis, Milwaukee and states of WI, IN, NE, MN, and KS made for a family of dedicated people interested in serving others. Shown, a Chaplain, Alexis from Milwaukee presents a devotional. Her father passed away during the exercise. Lunch sacks by the hundreds prepared daily patiently (left). And delivered with a smile (right).

The Lincoln, Nebraska SATERN members, second from left, Jared NØJMP, Eileen KEØEQY, &Eugene KBØQEY (left to right) plan their radio operation for Fort McCoy Northern Patriot Exercises were held in Wisconsin (Volk Field & Fort McCoy) during July 17th through July 20th. Lincoln SATERN was represented by Jared Pollack [NØJMP], Eileen VanLent [KEØEQY], and Eugene Schoeppner [KBØQEY] helping to establish & maintain radio communication for multiple The Salvation Army canteens & food depots and more. The Salvation Army s duties were to supply hydration and nutrition to the many military (& special units) participating in the exercise scenarios of disaster & crisis. (Salvation Army Team Radio Network, Lincoln, NE. The SATERN Connection Newsletter. ) Daily devotions with a prayer for our service to uplift the hard endeavoring, & sweating Guardsman were common.

An isolated radio shack (left). Chinooks (3) prepare to evacuate tornado victims in the dawns early light (right). Reverse Osmosis water purification in operation turning pond water into Guardsmen drinking water (left); Internet supplied from satellite by guardsmen (below). The Guardsmen can be self-sustaining in the field. A military rescue convoy, now you see it and below you don t.

No it s not the Middle- East, its tornado evacuation in the Mid- West. Supply & evacuation air ops continued non-stop as the Guardsmen were

hard pressed to relieve citizens. From a canteen the ceaseless Evac drama was unfolding in every direction. Army & Air Force Guardsmen Units came from Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Nebraska, & Wisconsin for this exercise was gleaned from discussions with these fine young patriots. With smiles and sustenance & a little TLC. The KS & Western MO Communicatio ns Vehicle at the lodging provided at Volk Field.

The meeting was held at the Olathe Corps. Brian, KCØBS, JOCO ARES Emergency Coordinator, began the program by having each person present provide his or her first name, callsign (if applicable) and amateur radio or other project they hoped to complete this summer. Brian also presented information on Johnson County ARES activities and upcoming public service events. Rich, NØENO, SATERN Divisional Coordinator, then presented a brief synopsis of SATERN activies including information on the then upcoming Patriot North Exercise. Brian then introduced Chuck, KØM, of the Back Yard Repeater Group (pictured above). who presented the main program titled, Emergency Communications Utilizing DMR Radio. DMR stands for Digital Mobile Radio. It was a fascinating look at how DMR can change the scope of amateur radio communications in disaster related activities.
