2 enia, OH (05/19/2017) The CQ Magazine announced that SATERN Founder Major Patrick E. McPherson, WW9E (SK) is one of 18 inductees for 2017 to the CQ Magazine Amateur Radio Hall of Fame. This brings the total number of members inducted to 310 since the hall's establishment in (Major Patrick McPherson had connections to our Division. Patrick McPherson was born in Kansas City, KS. He graduated from Wyandotte High School and attended Kansas City Metro Junior College. Patrick McPherson also served previously as an officer of The Salvation Army in the Kansas and Western Missouri Division. Major McPherson offered guidance and support during our deployments to Greensburg, KS and Joplin, MO. Major McPherson was also known to join us on our Kansas and Western Missouri Divisional SATERN HF Nets.) Editor, Rich Britain note. The CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame honors those individuals, whether licensed hams or not, who have made significant contributions to amateur radio; and those amateurs who have made significant contributions either to amateur radio, to their professional careers or to some other aspect of life on our planet. The CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame, started in 2001, recognizes those who have made major contributions to amateur radio as a whole, and radio amateurs who have made major contributions to society at large. The activities and accomplishments that qualify one for membership in this elite group involve considerable personal sacrifice and can usually be described by the phrase "above and beyond the call of duty."

3 Nominations for the CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame are due by 01 March of each year. Garrett Brown, W3AFF - Inventor of the Steadicam, which earned him both Oscar and Emmy awards for filmmaking technology Britton Chance, W2IBK (SK) - Pioneer in magnetic imaging; MIT professor, team leader in MIT Radiation Lab developing WWII radar; US Olympic gold medalist (sailing, 1952) John Crockett, W3KH - Repeater coordination pioneer; developed Southeastern Repeater Assn (SERA) Universal Coordination System; managed SCHEART system of linked repeaters in hospitals; VP Engineering for SC Educational TV network. Julius T. Freeman, KB2OFY (SK) - Tuskegee Airman and Congressional Gold Medal recipient; frequent speaker at schools and civic organizations. Limor Fried, AC2SN - Founder of Adafruit Industries, major supplier of open-source electronics to the Maker community; honored by President Obama in 2016 as a "Champion of Change" and by the Internet of Things Institute as one of the 25 most influential women in the IoT industry. Robin Haighton, VE3FRH (SK) - Founding member of Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS), former president of AMSAT-NA. David Honess, M6DNT - Developed AstroPi project, which sent two Raspberry Pi computers to the International Space Station as platforms for students on Earth to write and run their own computer code in space; honored for this work with the Sir Arthur Clarke Award, presented by the Arthur C. Clarke Foundation and the British Interplanetary Society. Pete Kemp, KZ1Z (SK) - Author and educator, directly responsible for licensing over 700 new hams. Kristen McIntyre, K6W - Apple software engineer and inventor (her name is on 22 granted or pending patents), promoter of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects for girls through various talks and YouTube presentations.

4 Pat McPherson, WW9E (SK) - Founder and longtime coordinator of SATERN (Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network). Andy Nguyen, VK3YT - Pico-ballooner, pioneered round-the-world microballoon flights carrying amateur radio. Tim Peake, KG5BVI - UK astronaut very active in ARISS program during time on International Space Station; coordinated ISS end of the AstroPi project (see David Honess, above). Mike Santana, WB6TEB (SK) - Two-way radio engineer, designed Clegg FM MHz transceiver and President Line of CB rigs, favorites for conversion to 10 meters. Allan Steinfeld, W2TN, ex-kl7hir (SK) - Longtime Race Director of the New York City Marathon, considered one of the fathers of the modern running movement. Gerald Youngblood, K5SDR - Pioneer of software defined radio (SDR) and founder of FlexRadio. SATERN Communications Vehicle at Tour de Hope charity bicycling event at The Liberty Memorial, May 7 th The Tour de Hope bicycling event sports four varying distance routes. Around 300 riders raise about $12,000. The location is inspiring, and provides sure-fire exposure of the support of The Salvation Army.

Salvation Army Disaster Teams Respond to Tornadoes in Van Zandt County, Texas Dallas, T (Sunday, April 30) - On Saturday evening, powerful storms in East Texas produced three significant tornados in Van Zandt County. The Salvation Army deployed one mobile kitchen on Saturday evening and two additional units were dispatched on Sunday morning.

9 "A number of Search and Rescue operations are continuing this morning throughout the East Texas Region and we have seen reports of 5 fatalities and up to 50 people injured," said Alvin Migues, Emergency Disaster Services Director for the Texas Division. "The Salvation Army units will be supporting the Search and Rescue efforts and we are working closely with the Incident Command and partner agencies to provide appropriate assistance moving forwards."(see to read more.) Families that have been impacted by the recent flooding are encouraged to attend. Wisconsin Salvation Army Continues to Serve in Aftermath of Chetek Tornado May 18, 2017 Krachel Greenwood (414) Chetek, WI (May 18, 2017) One day after a deadly tornado touched down in Chetek, Wisconsin, The Salvation Army continues to serve survivors and first responders. On Wednesday, May 17, Salvation Army volunteers served 225 meals, 550 drinks and several hundred snacks. Emotional and spiritual care was also provided for those in need.

11 Salvation Army Continues Response to Many Affected by Severe Weather in Oklahoma May 19, 2017 Cindy Fuller (405) Oklahoma City, OK: The Arkansas-Oklahoma Division of The Salvation Army continues to provide support to those affected by severe storms in Oklahoma this week. On Thursday, another round of severe weather including straight line winds, flooding and tornadoes pushed through the division. The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services in May action Buffalo EDS Team Responds to Two Alarm Fire May 24, 2017 Michael R. Schwartz (315) Buffalo, NY - The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services Team based in Buffalo, NY responded to a two alarm residential fire in the City on Wednesday morning. The team provided canteen and hydration services to approximately 60 firefighters who were involved in fighting this large fire that started in one residence and spread to two adjacent buildings. The Salvation Army along with members of the American Red Cross Greater Buffalo Chapter Disaster team are working to assist those displaced with finding temporary housing as well as offering emotional and spiritual care.

More than 62,000 residents were initially left without electricity on Monday. 13 Ogdensburg, NY - The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services Team based in Ogdensburg, New York participated in a FAA required Airport Disaster Exercise at the Ogdensburg International Airport Thursday morning. The teams provided canteen and hydration services to over 50 first responders from Federal, State and Local emergency management, fire and law enforcement agencies from across the North Country. The Salvation Army operated in both the exercise as well as in providing drinks and snacks to the exercise participants. The Salvation Army has requested our Divisional SATERN personnel and our SATERN Communications Vehicle. This exercise will involve coordination between local, state, federal and civilian organizations. The Salvation Army and The National Guard will provide food, lodging and travel.
