1 Intrductin The Axn Signal Unit (ASU) is part f a cmmunicatins platfrm that alerts the user when hardware is activated. When that hardware is used, the ASU sends a message recgnizable by ther Axn equipment. Fr example, the ASU can be set up t wrk with an emergency vehicle s light bar. When the light bar activates, all prperly equipped Axn systems within range begin recrding. Systems that wrk with the ASU currently include the Axn Bdy 2 camera, Axn Fleet system, and sme Axn Flex systems. Fr autmatic recrding t ccur with Axn Flex, an Axn Flex camera must be attached t an Axn Flex cntrller equipped with Axn Signal technlgy. A cntrller equipped with this technlgy has an Axn lg n the lwer-left side f the frnt f the device (see belw). See the TASER Axn Flex System User Manual fr mre infrmatin. Axn Signal Unit Axn Flex cntrller with Axn Signal technlgy Failure t fllw the instructins in this manual may result in the ASU nt wrking prperly r cause damage t the ASU r the vehicle. Save these instructins. The technician wh installs the ASU must be qualified t wrk with autmtive electrnics. If munting the ASU requires drilling hles, ensure that drilling will nt damage the emergency vehicle s equipment r ther vital parts. Remve all burrs and debris after drilling. Install grmmets int all wire passage hles. Ensure there is a gd electrical grund t the vehicle chassis. If the ASU is installed in the cab f the vehicle (in a lcatin ther than under the center cnsle), it shuld be permanently munted t avid injury. D nt install the ASU anywhere that will interfere with airbag deplyment. D nt install the ASU where it will be expsed t the elements r extreme heat. D nt install the ASU in the vehicle s engine cmpartment. Page 1 f 7
2 Characteristics Secure Bluetth bradcast (30 secnds). Activates all enabled cameras in range (30+ feet/9.1+ meters). Installatin Instructins An ASU is typically installed near the siren r light bar cntrller (trunk r cnsle). The ASU is nt intended t be installed in the engine cmpartment f a vehicle. The ASU can be installed using rbust duble-sided tape, Velcr, r by blting the ASU thrugh its munting flanges (munting hardware and electrical supply wiring nt included). If using an adhesive t munt the equipment, thrughly clean the surface with a 50/50 mixture f isprpyl alchl and water befre installatin. Wires shuld be cnnected t the GPIO terminal blck interface. Wires shuld be n smaller than 18 American wire gauge (AWG) and n larger than 16 AWG. 1A fuse is recmmended, either inline r n a fuse blck. N prgramming f the ASU is required fr peratin. 4 Wiring Instructins System Pwer (Terminal Psitin 1 & 2) 1. Using apprpriately sized RED wire, cnnect J2-1 t the Psitive (+) battery terminal. Fuse the 1 Amp. 2. Using apprpriately sized BLACK wire, cnnect J2-2 t the vehicle s chassis grund. This is typically adjacent t the battery. Ignitin Enable (Terminal Psitin 3) Cnnect J2-3 terminal t the vehicle s ignitin vltage. This will allw the ASU t be turned n with the ignitin switch. Auxiliary Enable (Terminal Psitin 4) The J2-4 input is used t prvide an alternate signal t the ASU fr enabling the system. Nte: Either the ignitin r auxiliary enable input n the ASU must be used fr the device t turn n. Bth inputs may be used simultaneusly t allw fr greater flexibility in enabling ptins, but at least ne must be utilized. The ASU must be wired in a manner that vltage fr ignitin and auxiliary enable is remved prir t remval f system pwer; system pwer and enable ndes must nt be wired frm the same surce. Trigger Input (Terminal Psitins 5 12) 1. Turn n the trigger surce (e.g. light bar cntrl signal). 2. Using a vltmeter, verify the wire that is cnnected t the trigger surce has vltage present while the trigger is enabled. 3. Turn the trigger ff and verify that the vltage drps t zer. Fr the ASU t wrk ptimally, the trigger shuld prvide a cnstant vltage t the ASU when it is activated. 4. Cnnect the trigger surce t ne f the input terminals n the ASU J2 cnnectr. Up t eight independent trigger surces can be wired directly t the ASU. It is recmmended that inputs that riginate frm prgressive slide switches are wired t J2-11 r J2-12. Test and Trublesht the ASU System 1. Verify the ASU has pwer and turn n the ignitin r alternate enabling surce. 2. Mnitr the diagnstic LED indicatrs: A green POWER light indicates the ASU is pwered up. A green STATUS light indicates a successful startup. If bth lights are illuminated, the ASU is ready and wrking prperly. Page 4 f 7
5 If neither light is n, use a vltmeter t verify that there is vltage present at the system pwer input J2-1 and the enabling surce(s) J2-3 and/r J2-4. If nly the status LED is nt illuminated, turn ff the ASU by remving the enabling signal (ignitin r auxiliary). Verify the pwer LED turns ff when this actin is perfrmed. Re-activate the enabling signal and allw the system t bt fr a few secnds. If this des nt cause the status LED t turn n, remve pwer frm the ASU by discnnecting system pwer at J2-1 and recnnecting it. If either light remains ff, cntact TASER custmer service. 3. Turn n the trigger (fr example, activate the vehicle s light bar). 4. Listen fr the tw beeps that indicate the Axn camera system nw is in EVENT mde. Nte: The ASU is thrughly tested prir t shipment. Hwever, shuld an issue be encuntered during installatin r during the life f the prduct, fllw the steps abve fr infrmatin n repair and trubleshting. There are n serviceable parts n the ASU. Radi Waves Changes r mdificatins t the equipment nt expressly apprved by the manufacturer culd vid the prduct warranty and the user s authrity t perate the equipment. This wireless device is a radi transmitter and receiver. It is designed and manufactured nt t exceed the emissin limits fr expsure t radi frequency (RF) energy set by the Federal Cmmunicatins Cmmissin (FCC) f the U.S. Gvernment. These limits are part f cmprehensive guidelines and establish permitted levels f RF energy fr the general ppulatin. The guidelines are based n standards that were develped by independent scientific rganizatins thrugh peridic and thrugh evaluatin f scientific studies. The standards include a substantial safety margin designed t ensure the safety f all persns, regardless f age and health. Befre a device mdel is available fr sale t the public, it must be tested and certified t the FCC that it des nt exceed the limit established by the gvernmentadpted requirement fr safe expsure. This equipment has been tested and fund t cmply with the limits fr a Class B digital device, pursuant t part 15 f the FCC Rules. These limits are designed t prvide reasnable prtectin against harmful interference in a residential installatin. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radi frequency energy and, if nt installed and used in accrdance with the instructins, may cause harmful interference t radi cmmunicatins. Hwever, there is n guarantee that interference will nt ccur in a particular installatin. If this equipment des cause harmful interference t radi r televisin receptin, which can be determined by turning Page 5 f 7
6 the equipment ff and n, the user is encuraged t try t crrect the interference by ne r mre f the fllwing measures: Rerient r relcate the receiving antenna. Increase the separatin between the equipment and receiver. Cnnect the equipment int an utlet n a circuit different frm that t which the receiver is cnnected. Cnsult TASER Internatinal Custmer Service fr help. This device cmplies with Part 15 f the FCC Rules. Operatin is subject t the fllwing tw cnditins: 1.
