1 Applicatin Nte AN-2097 Evaluatin Kit fr the S7500 CW Tunable Laser 1 Intrductin The evaluatin kit is intended t facilitate testing f Finisar s S7500 widely tunable laser, S7610 Integrable Tunable Laser Assembly (ITLA), r S7620 Mini-ITLA. The S7500 cntains a mnlithically integrated MG-Y tunable laser and SOA n a single InP chip, packaged int a hermetically sealed package with an integrated ptical islatr and wavelength lcker. The S7610 ITLA and S7620 Mini-ITLA cnsist f an S7500 laser munted n a cntrl bard cntaining all electrnics necessary t cntrl the laser, ffering users a simple and well-defined digital cmmand interface. In the evaluatin kit an S7610/S7620 is cnnected t a hst bard, and cntrlled frm a PC with the prvided sftware applicatin. The hst bard prvides pwer t the ITLA and allws cntrlling the ITLA frm a PC ver a standard RS-232 serial interface. 2 Applicable Dcuments, Standards and MSAs OIF-ITLA-MSA-01.2 Integrable Tunable Laser Assembly Multi Surce Agreement 3 Hw t use this Applicatin Nte The audience fr this applicatin nte is hardware engineers wh want t evaluate the Finisar S7500 CW tunable lase, the S7610 ITLA r the S7620 Mini-ITLA. 4 Handling Cnsideratins Electrstatic discharge This prduct is sensitive t electrstatic discharge and shuld nt be handled except at a static free wrkstatin. Take precautins t prevent ESD; use wrist straps, grunded wrk surfaces and recgnized anti-static techniques when handling the mdule. Pwer supplies T prevent damage t the parts, all pwer supplies and signal surces shuld be switched ff befre cnnecting r discnnecting any cables. Care f fiber pigtail and ptical cnnectr Handle the laser mdule by its package nly; never hld it by its pigtail. Keep the ptical cnnectr clean and free f surface particles. Keep the ptical cnnectr handling/prtectin cap in place when the fiber pigtail is nt mated. Oil-free canned air r nitrgen with an extensin tube may be used t help remve surface particles. Observe nrmal industry prcedures fr handling and cleaning. Use care in cntrlling the minimum fiber bend radius. 2 5 Installatin and Operatin 5.1 Evaluatin Kit Parts Fllwing parts are included in the shipment: A metal husing cntaining: S7610 ITLA r S7620 Mini-ITLA; S7600-HB hst bard; Flex cable cnnecting the ITLA t the hst bard; Syntune Laser Cntrl Applicatin sftware; In rder t perate the evaluatin kit, the user has t prvide a PC running Windws XP r Windws 7 with a serial prt, as well as tw pwer supplies (+3.3 V 1.5 A and -5.2 V 0.1 A) t pwer the cntrl bard. 5.2 Sftware Installatin 1. Insert the Evaluatin Kit CD and pen the CD drive flder in Windws Explrer. Launch the Laser Cntrl Applicatin installatin package by duble clicking Setup Syntune Laser Cntrl rel_xxxxx.msi. 2. 3 3. On the cnfirmatin screen click Next t start the installatin prcess. Once the installatin has cmpleted, click Clse. 5.3 Hardware Installatin 1. Remve the screws n the crners that hld dwn the lid f the husing; Rev C 2013 Finisar Crpratin AN-2097 Page 3 f 10

4 2. The hst bard requires a dual pwer supply, +3.3 V and -5.2 V. The pwer supplies are cnnected t the hst bard thrugh the cnnectr in the bttm right crner in the picture abve. Cnnectins are, frm left t right: +3.3 V, GND, -5.2 V. Wire the cnnectr t the pwer supply, but d nt pwer up the supply yet. Please make sure prper current limits are set (cf. sectin 5.4 belw). 3. The ITLA is cnnected t the hst bard thrugh a flex cable that plugs int the 14-pin scket n the PCBA. 4. Cnnect the 9-pin D-sub cnnectr t any available serial prt n the PC with the Syntune Laser Cntrl Applicatin using a standard serial cable. 5. 5 5.5 S7500 Evaluatin Kit Operatin 1. Launch the Syntune Laser Cntrl Applicatin by duble clicking the icn that was installed n the desktp r by selecting the prgram frm the Start menu (Prgrams > Syntune > Syntune Laser Cntrl). 2. Select the serial prt cnnected t the DC cntrl bard frm the drp-dwn list and click Cnnect. Rev C 2013 Finisar Crpratin AN-2097 Page 5 f 10

6 3. If everything is prperly cnnected and pwered n, the cntrl applicatin will launch and display general status infrmatin as shwn abve. On the right side f the windw the user can set the channel number and enable/disable the laser utput. 4. On the secnd tab sheet, the different cntrl currents and vltages can be individually adjusted within the ranges defined in the table belw. Every time a channel is selected, the cntrls are set t the values stred in the lk-up table stred in the micrcntrller n the ITLA cntrl bard. 6. 7 6 Laser Cntrl Applicatin 6.1 Cmmn Cmmands Status & Inf Tab Cm Prt Select Cm Prt. Cnnect t and Discnnect frm laser cntrl bard. Once cnnected the baud rate can be changed between 9600, 19200, 38400, and baud. Aut baud rate the applicatin will try all five baud rates n cnnect befre returning with a Failed t cnnect errr. The baud rate is reset t 9600 baud when discnnecting. 2 FM dither Enable FM dithering. Set FM dither amplitude and rate, can nly be changed when FM dither is disabled. 3 Fine Tune Change the detuning frm the ITU frequency up t ±5 GHz. 4 Channel Set channel. The nminal frequency and wavelength f the channel is displayed. 5 Laser utput Enable/Disable laser utput. The measured utput pwer frm the reference pht detectr is displayed. 6 Exit Exit the applicatin. 7 Temperatures Displays the case and laser temperatures (the etaln temperature reading is bslete). 8 8 Alarms Displays alarm and status flags as defined in OIF-ITLA-MSA The fatal and warning flags have bth a latched and nn-latched representatin. The latched versin f the flag remains set even if the transient cnditin expires. There are fur alarm cnditins: Pwer: The laser utput pwer is utside the fatal r warning threshld range. Thermal: The laser temperature is utside the fatal r warning threshld range. The case temperature has been utside the specified range (-5 C t +75 C) fr mre than 5 secnds. Frequency: The laser frequency is utside the fatal r warning threshld range. Vendr: The laser age (cf. OIF-ITLA-MSA ) exceeds the fatal r warning threshld limit. Latched There are eight status flags: CRL: Cmmunicatin Reset Latched. The serial cmmunicatin interface has been reset. Nte that this flag will be set when the ITLA is pwered up. Remains set until cleared. MRL: Mdule Reset Latched. The ITLA has been reset. Will be set when the ITLA is pwered up. Remains set until cleared. CEL: Cmmunicatin Errr Latched. Flags a cmmunicatin errr. XEL: Executin Errr Latched. Flags an executin errr. Remains set until cleared. DIS: Mdule s utput is hardware disabled. Read nly. FATAL: Fatal cnditin. The fatal alarm flags that set the FATAL cnditin are fully cnfigurable thrugh the fatal trigger register (0x29). Read nly. ALM: Alarm cnditin. The warning flags that set the ALM cnditin are fully cnfigurable thrugh the alarm trigger register (0x2A). Read nly. SRQ: Service request flag. Reflects the state f the mdule s SRQ* line. When the SRQ* line is lw this flag is set t 1. The SRQ* line is fully cnfigurable thrugh the SRQ* trigger register (0x28). Read nly. Use the clear buttn the clear all latched alarms. The alarm and status flags are peridically updated (i.e. whenever the applicatin is in idle state). 9 6.2 Current Cntrl Tab Laser Cntrls itune Set/Read the fine tune table index (0 3840). Set by the frequency cntrl lp when the cntrl lp (item 3) is enabled. Manufacturing mde gives access t the manufacturing register cmmands. 5 Slider values Save currents r DAC readings t a text file. 6 Update Update values n the Current cntrl tab 7 Output Set the SOA and Gain currents in ma r DAC bit values. 8 Frequency Tuning Set the three frequency tuning currents in ma r DAC bit values.
