GIWW? nswer Some ICW Questions Highlight Some Possible Firsts Offer Several ICW Tips & Tricks US MEXICO Corpus Christi Houston Brownsville From Boston to Brownsville, the Intracoastal Waterway is a protected route behind natural barrier islands, connecting bays and coastal rivers along the tlantic and Gulf coasts. The tlantic portion connects creeks, rivers, sounds, and bays from Massachusetts Bay to Florida Bay, and includes the Cape Cod and Chesapeake & Delaware (C&D) canals. The Gulf portion includes the Okeechobee Waterway, Mobile Bay, Mississippi Sound, the Sabine-Neches Waterway, and Galveston Bay. New Orleans Mobile Panama City Gulf of Mexico St. ugustine Tampa Titusville OKEECHOBEE WTERWY Miami CPE CNVERL Key 90 West 80 tlantic Ocean The Intracoastal Waterway merica s ICW Dream Fulfilled Nearly 4,000 miles long, the Intra coastal Waterway takes advantage of one of the most extensive protected coastlines in the world. Even the Great Barrier Reef in ustralia runs only 1,200 miles along its coast. The Inside Passage, a naturally protected inland route from Seattle, Washington to Skagway, laska, is a mere 1,000 miles. First envisioned by our nation s founders over two hundred years ago, the Intracoastal Waterway is an awe-inspiring engineering feat. Delayed and postponed for generations, a World War and an economic crash provided the impetus for its completion. Only then did the country have the federal unity to complete the original dream of a nationally managed, protected inland route for commerce and defense. s 12 On the Water CruiseGuide (3rd Ed.)
