Next Gallup Public Radio Board Meetings: 5:30pm Monday, April 11 (in KGLP s basement studios, Gurley Hall B-212), and Monday, May 9, in the UNMG Director s conference room, Gurley Hall, 1216a. In this Issue: Program Schedule 2 Funding Stats 3 KGLP Staff 3 Pledge Form 4 Program Survey 5 Eco-Powered Radio and other gifts 6 KGLP Board Members: Raymond Calderon President KGLP 91.7 FM Spring 2016 Newsletter V o l u m e 6, I s s u e 1 Spring Fundraiser On-Air April 11th through the 16th Silent Spring: Cranking up for Earth Day! (Another silent pledge drive, with little live on-air pitching) A Message from KGLP s Station Manager "Studio B", is a simple recording room that has taken some of the pressure off of Studio A, our onair studio, giving staff extra work space, and allowing students in my UNMG course, "Performance for Radio and TV", to hit their marks with teleprompter and green screen KGLP s New Studio B, now used for recording. Eventually, we hope to fund a full-fledged on-air studio, interchangeable with Studio A, our only current on-air studio. Left: Get one of these Eco- Powered radio flashlights with USB & hand-crank charging (charges phones, too): Details on page 6; On the Right, KGLP s art collection: Pick up one with a donation of $25-$250: A p r i l technology, as well as improvising. The point is that "Studio B" has become a fairly flexible workbench that will help us finalize a design for what we hope will become capable of live broadcast in a couple of years. Recently, we cleaned up our audio processing, which was not optimized for our current program schedule, and this change presumably has reduced the incidence of abrupt, inappropriate changes in audio level, hopefully improving your listening experience. (continued on page 6) Carol Sarath Vice-President and on Programming Committee (PC) Susan Macias Richard Goshorn UNMG Appt. Christopher Dyer UNMG Appt. Eileen Barrett Colin Gershon Lester Kien Fitz Sargent Terrence Sloan Secretary Treasurer Board/PC Board Board Board / PC Board Board Update Lynn Anner-Bolieu and Sam MacBride left the board in 2015, with Susan Macias then appointed to complete a term. In January, Susan, Lester Kien, Terrence Sloan, and Fitz Sargent were elected to 2-year terms, through Terms for board members Eileen Barrett, Carol Sarath, Raymond Calderon, and Colin Gershon run through Upcoming board meetings at UNMG are this Monday, April 11th, 5:30-7pm, in KGLP's basement studios, Gurley Hall, B-212, and then on Monday, May 9th, 5:30-7pm in Gurley Hall, 1216a (the Executive Director's first floor Conference Room.) Susan Macias has taken on the role of board secretary, with UNMG appointee and campus CFO Rick Goshorn now serving as Gallup Public Radio s board treasurer, a position that former board member Mildred Dunning fulfilled for some years, with Carol Sarath then acting as interim until Could you answer the phone during KGLP s On-Air Fundraiser? 6 KGLP 91.7 FM, Gallup Public Radio 705 Gurley Avenue Gallup, NM The Voice of Gallup - Spring 2016 Newsletter Office: Studio: Fax: kglpradio@kglp.org Visit us on the web or listen online: KGLP.org. Spring Newsletter KGLP 91.7 FM April 2016 Page 6 of 6 a Message From KGLP s Manager (continued from Page 1) You may have noticed weather reports on KGLP during and, thanks to Tom Trowbridge and Calvin Gleason. Tom, a journalist out of Santa Fe, also produces "Dateline New Mexico", which airs weekday mornings, usually at 6:45 and 8:45. Calvin is a local producer who has worked for Navajo Nation Broadcast Services in Window Rock. The CD digitization project continues, with Strider Brown, Trey Chavez, and Ivah Benally loading our music library's collection into our automation system. CD storage is limited, with more music being released digitally, rather than on CD or vinyl, and so this is an important step for KGLP's future. Your donations help move this work along. Since Earth Day will follow closely after our kickoff of the Spring 2016 membership campaign, we want to offer something appropriate for the season: An Eco-Powered radio with AM, FM, and Weather Alert bands, an LED flashlight component, charging with a USB cable, and, if you're not near a USB power source, a hand-crank generator (don't have a PC or other USB source? You can purchase an inexpensive A/C wall adapter as your USB power source, or again, just crank it up!) Once you've charged your radio, you can even use it to charge your cell phone or other mobile device via a USB power plug. New KGLP donor/members or those who have not given to Gallup Public Radio in the past few years, can get one of these FR-1 radios with a donation of $50. Renewing and sustaining members can get these for just $25 more than they gave in previous fundraisers (with a minimum total annual donation of $40 required.) Sustaining members need only make a one-time donation of $25 or more in order to reserve the radio for pickup. We have a dozen on-hand at this writing, and can get more within a couple of weeks. You must reserve the radio when pledging or before picking one up at KGLP. If you can't come by KGLP within a few weeks after you make your contribution, we will consider requests to mail it. We ll have artwork and other gifts, too: You can see all of the details on KGLP.org, in the What s New section, or follow the link to KGLP s Facebook page for updates. Sincerely, Rachel Kaub, KGLP Station Manager
