4 President s Message Scott Haney, CVARC President N0GUD Greetings, all and sundry! A new year is upon us, and that means it s time for our annual elections. Per the club s by-laws, the President serves a oneyear term, so that s on the agenda for our next meeting. Anyone who has served on the Board of Directors in any office in the past is eligible. All other Board positions have two-year terms. Per bylaws, the offices up in 2018 are Vice President, Secretary, Information Director, and Emergency Preparedness Director. Any CVARC member is eligible to hold one of these offices. Feel free to ask any current or past office holders what they think of the job! I m glad to announce the date of the 2018 National Weather Service Spotter Training: 17 March! Yes, it s three weeks later than usual it was hard to get all the various schedules worked out this year. But everything else remains the same, including St Mark s (which has been a fabulous venue for us), and the start time of 1 PM. More information will come out in the next few weeks, so stay tuned! It was great to see so many of you at our annual dinner at Scott s. I thought the staff did a great job. If you agree, feel free to drop them a note sometime. I m sure they d love to hear it, particularly since one of their staff is the daughter of a former member of CVARC, KB9CEF! She s recently returned to the area and was happy to see many familiar faces. 73, N0GUD Emergency Coordinator, Linn Co. & Iowa District 6 DECEMBER 14, 2017 CVARC BOARD MINUTES e December 2017 CVARC Board of Directors Meeting was held on ursday, December 14, at Scott s Restaurant. Motion made, seconded and approved to adjourn at 6:23 PM. About 60 people attended the dinner. Respectfully submitted by KD0HF, Tom Hess, Secretary. DMR Repeater begins on the air testing (yes... finally!) By David Peterson KC0ALC I have been testing a solution for the repeater ID for a few days now and it has been showing promise. In order to do the next round of testing I will be putting the repeater on the air at my QTH while I am building and testing the nal cables/circuits, working on the integration of an external controller into the system and verifying that the ID keeps working as expected. I have a spare set of duplexer cans so it will be a fully functional repeater and my QTH should have enough elevation to cover at least some of CR, (I live on the SW side of CR near Kirkwood and approximately the same elevation as Mt. Trashmore), but I can make no promises on exact locations that will be able to use the repeater. Like any radio communications, a good external antenna may be required. I will leave the repeater on as much as possible but there will be times (sometimes extended periods) I will need to be working on it so please bear with any interruptions or downtime. I won t clog your inbox with announcements every time it is up and down so if you cannot reach the repeater, I would rst check the repeater s webpage on the Brandmeister network to see if it is on-line or not: repeater&id= Continued on the next page 4
5 ere is one more round of parts orders to nish the interface cable that I need to make before we can move the repeater to the nal tower site, so we obviously won t make the goal of being fully operational by the end of 2017 but I believe we have nally overcome the technical hurdles. Happy New Year and 73, David Peterson, KC0ALC CVARC Station Trustee TYT DMR programming Eric Watson, CVARC Communications Activities Director K0ECW CVARC DMR enthusiasts, If anyone needs assistance with programming their new TYT MD-380 or MD-390 HT or SharkRF openspot, I can help you. Feel free to contact me by or phone. k0ecw.ericwatson@gmail.com or Eric and the venue were not lining up well. But thanks to diligent work by WB0OAV, we now have the date locked in. More to follow! Robert Scott Haney, N0GUD But Wait there s one more.. In addition to the slate of officers that are running for re-election, the Treasurer, Shelley Massell, KD0RWN, is resigning from her position. She has served for 4 years since January 2013 but her term doesn t end until the end of the this year, She took over for George Kunxman, KD0HUE, mid term as well. She is willing to stay on to assist who ever takes over to make the transition smooth, but would like to have the transition completed by the end of March. Please consider running for this position. Dinner at Scott s ELECTIONS Scott Haney, CVARC President N0GUD Hey, folks. We will hold elections at the 11 January club meeting. Per the club s by-laws, the President serves a one-year term. Please consider running. None of the current office holders will be terribly upset if not re-elected. Will also not be upset if elected, for that matter, but it s good to spread the experience around! is is our club, and it will be as good as we make it. Unrelated to election is the date of the 2018 National Weather Service Spotter Training: 17 March! at s later than we usually have it, but schedules with NWS staff New Call Sign WA0ZZG photos Rupert M. 7 National Weather Service Quad Cities Forecast Office November 2017 Guidelines for Reporting Winter Precipitation 24-Hour Unlisted Number for Storm Reports: Facebook: NWSQuadCities When to Report Winter Precipitation (Snowfall and/or Ice) During the event: storm total snowfall/ice so far as of about 9 am During the event: storm total snowfall/ice so far as of about 3 pm During the event: storm total snowfall/ice so far as of about 8 pm At the end of the event: final storm total snowfall/ice amount How to Measure Ice Measuring ice can be difficult due to extremely slippery conditions and potential for falling ice, tree limbs, power lines, etc. Use extreme caution during icy conditions! Ice accumulation is best observed on fences, twigs, or small branches where the depth of ice can be seen clearly. Measure the thickness of the ice from the ice surface to the object (see diagram). Measurements to the 1/10 th or 1/8 th of an inch are best, but to the nearest ¼ of an inch are acceptable. Twig Ice Measure here How to Measure Snow Look for a flat, somewhat open area away from buildings and trees. Some distant trees may be helpful in breaking the wind, preventing drifting, and thus providing for a more even distribution of the snow. Find a location where the snow appears to be near its average depth. (Avoid drifts or bare spots.) Use a snow board if possible. Measure the depth with a ruler or snow measuring stick at several locations and then average the readings. (Traditionally ten measurements are made.) Measure in the same general area for the duration of the storm. Measuring New Snow Falling On Top Of Old Snow Sometimes if the old snow has settled or partially melted enough to develop a crust or to be noticeably denser than the new snow, it may be possible to insert the snow stick until it meets the greater resistance of the crust of old snow, and to use this depth as the amount of new snow having fallen. Otherwise, a snow board provides the best option for measuring new snow vs. old snow. Snow Boards A snow board is a flat board, painted white, and laid on top of the ground (or old snow when there is a possibility of new snow falling). Snow boards simplify measuring new snow on top of old snow and also prevent the ground heat from prematurely melting your new snowfall. Example: Snow begins at 5 am. At 9 am, you measure 3 inches of new snow and call it in. It continues to snow during the afternoon. At 3 pm you measure again in the same area, and now it is up to 5 inches. You call in 5 inches for the storm total so far. The snow ends around 7 pm, and your final snowfall measurement is 6 inches. You call in your storm total snowfall of 6 inches. You clear off your snow board and are ready for the next snow storm! 7
