Ethan Poole (KW4EK) gave an in-depth presentation of uninterruptible power source of better than 12 hours typical runtime to maintain a fully functioning multi-technology shack running entirely on batteries. Continuation of Ethan Poole s presentation will be scheduled at the Anderson Radio Club s November 17 meeting.

We are about a week away from the Thanksgiving Holiday and are rapidly approaching the finish line of Our club has experienced many good times this year but we have also experienced difficult times in the loss of some of our long-time members. During this Thanksgiving season, we might be tempted to ask ourselves what we have to be thankful for. I am thankful we had the opportunity to know and love those who have gone before us. They will forever leave a lasting impression on our lives and will never be forgotten. I m also thankful for our current members and the privilege of serving with all of you. There is still a lot of work to be done within our club and we each have a wonderful opportunity to make a difference. At our general meeting on November 17, we will be electing officers for the 2017 calendar year. To all who are willing to serve we say thank you. I expect 2017 to be another great year for our club. We will again experience great times as we serve together. As we approach the year end, we look forward to our Club Christmas Dinner at Mama Penn s on December 1. To date, we have approximately 40 people who have said they will attend the dinner. I look forward to fellowshipping with each and every one of you and I know we will have a great time. In closing, I want to take this opportunity to say thank you for making the Anderson Radio Club what it is today. We have some of the best members any club could ever ask for. ARES/ RACES/ SCHEART / SKYWARN We continue training by having an ARES / RACES / Skywarn/ SCHEARTS and AUXCOM net on the club repeater (146.79) on Sunday evenings (20:30).

I encourage everyone to check into our Sunday night net as it is a good way to get familiar with how an emergency net might operate and to get to know the hams who check in.

4 ARES/ RACES/ SCHEART / SKYWARN We continue training by having an ARES / RACES / Skywarn/ SCHEARTS and AUXCOM net on the club repeater (146.79) on Sunday evenings (20:30). Please check in if you can, it s good training. I encourage everyone to check into our Sunday night net as it is a good way to get familiar with how an emergency net might operate and to get to know the hams who check in. In an emergency, it is always good to know who is out there and where they are. Also, don t forget to check into the SC ARES nets two times a month - on the 1 st and 3 rd Mondays of each month at 18:00 on Mhz. For those of you who don t have ham privileges on the HF bands, it s time to upgrade. The last couple of months we have been going over the proper way to format messages (ARRL style) and how to word count messages to assure we send the message properly. Also, I have been encouraging check ins to begin establishing relationships with the agencies we serve. We can better serve these agencies if we know the people we serve. So get out there and introduce yourself to the Red Cross, Salvation Army, EMD s Sherriff s Dept, Police Departments and Fire Departments. These are the agencies we serve and they need to know us as well as we need to know them. Don t be pushy but be friendly and explain who we are and how we can help if needed. Columbia, SC (At the CAE Airport) Events: Special Event Radio Station WX4CAE operational the entire day. Basic SKYWARN Spotter Class 10 AM to Noon Introductory SKYWARN Net Control Orientation 1PM to 2 PM Food will be provided. It celebrates the contributions that SKYWARN volunteers make to the NWS mission protecting life and property. Amateur radio operators form a large percentage of the SKYWARN volunteers across the country. They provide vital communication between NWS and emergency management if normal communications become inoperative. During the SKYWARN Special Event ham operators and other SKYWARN spotters are invited to NWS offices for food, learning and fellowship, and to contact other radio operators across the world. Awards can be earned for contacting other NWS offices! You DO NOT need to be a ham radio operator to attend! 8 EDITOR S NOTE: Margie Spangenberg (KK4AGN) margiespang@att.net As 2016 ends, I have had the pleasure of attending eight Hamfests and/or ARRL National Conventions and Expo including Stone Mountain Hamfest in Lawrenceville, GA, Atlanta Hamfest in Marietta, GA, Shelby Hamfest in Shelby NC, Upstate South Carolina Hamfest in Spartanburg, SC, Beachfest and Computer Expo in Conway, SC, Anderson Radio Club in Anderson, SC, Hamcation in Orlando, FL and the Hamvention in Dayton, OH. At these eight events, I discovered all kinds of information (A Contesting Primer) and activities (Foxhunt, AMSAT Demos) are offered to the Hamfest attendees. While at a Hamfest, I arrange time to attend a few of the scheduled forums that might showcase a Keynote Speaker, like Gordon West (WB6NOA) or take notes at a digital mobile radio class. I also have fun looking for tailgaters bargains or walking around the bone yard hunting for radio/computer treasures. Another important item on my agenda is exploring the Vendor Exhibits and possibly the chance of seeing the latest model of high-tech radios at the vendor s booth. Or while in the Exhibit venue, I discover special interest groups, such South Carolina Single Sideband Net ( or CW Academy offering a free Morse Code training program on Skype ( As I step out of the motorhome door at the Hamfest RV parking lot, I begin my walk on the Hamfest grounds, I stop by the food court and buy a hot dog plate, drop my raffle ticket into the prizes drop box, watch some people walk into the VE Testing room, and see and hear Special Event Operators for the Hamfest. It s been a lot of fun going to the eight Hamfests this year, and I look forward to the 2017 Hamfests. A Wonderful Happy Thanksgiving Day to you and your family.

DICK WILKINS WB6EDR A native of California, Dick worked for AeroJet-General Corporation from 1958 to 1967and in 1967 joined the California Highway Patrol until he retired in 1992.

13 DICK WILKINS WB6EDR A native of California, Dick worked for AeroJet-General Corporation from 1958 to 1967and in 1967 joined the California Highway Patrol until he retired in In California, he was a member of the North Hills Radio Club (K6IS) serving as Vice President and President and also with the Auburn Radio Club (W6EK). As a General licensed ham since 1963, Dick recalls when he made his first CW contact using a DX40 transmitter and a long wire on 40 meters. Dick now has 10x12 ham shack with a HF, VHF/UHF radio, a dual band HT, and a tri-band HT. Dick also has a 2-meter mobile unit in his car. Outside his ham shack is a 50 Rhon tower (transported from his California home to South Carolina) that supports a 6-band HEX beam (6 thru 20 meters), 2 long-wire double bazooka antennas for 40 and 80 meters and a diamond vertical dual-band antenna for 2 meters and 440. Dick became an off and on Anderson Radio Club member since 1997 and urges all current members to constantly seek out and recruit anyone and everyone they come in contact with on a daily basis to inform them about the importance of ham radio to the community and to bring them to a club meeting. Dick s other hobbies are growing roses, photography and visiting lighthouses. Dick and his wife, Pat, born in SC, will be celebrating their 40 th anniversary next year. Pat has two grown sons and Dick and two grown daughters.
