4 I hope that everyone took advantage of the great opportunity that was presented by at the end of the last session of the net hosted by Dino. I was eagerly awaiting his announcement and at the directed time I switched to channel eight only to find that I could not hear anyone. After checking three radios I found that none of them had a simplex frequency on channel eight. It took much more time to find out that I had an old frequency list. All my radios were programmed in accordance with that old list. So after digging out a new list from an issue of the "Ham Shack" I was ready to pull up my software and reprogram my radios. The first and easiest was to by my Wouxun handheld. I entered the correct frequencies into the spreadsheet and uploaded the new information to the handheld. My first attempts to use the radio met with less than success. I finally realized that our two meter repeater frequency was for some reason shifting not 600Khz but 1.250Mhz. Tried reloading the software update with the same result. Finally on the third attempt the update took affect and actually worked. Now it was time to attack the mobile. Again I accessed my software on my computer only to find that most of the software was missing. Ok, no biggie I have the disk. Put the disk in the disk drive of my laptop only to have the computer refuse to read the disk. I wound up having to use the disk drive in another computer but access it from my laptop via my network. Once the software was loaded on the laptop it should have been an easy job to just update the spreadsheet and then upload to the mobile unit. I know that it did not go quite that easy but I have already forgotten what the glitch was in the plan. All of the above is just a great reminder why we need to take advantage of any chances we get to check out our radios and associated equipment. As a sidelight at the most recent Tech Class I had noticed that my handheld was not working quite as expected. So as an added point anytime you notice a piece of equipment does not seem to be working correctly it is advisable to check it very thoroughly to make sure that it does work as expected. Hopefully, Dino, or maybe even other net control stations will conduct random tests such as the last one.
