21 SKYWARN Nets The sole purpose of a SKYWARN net: Relay severe weather reports to the NWS

22 Severe Weather Reports Must meet certain criteria Must be eye-witness reports May be first-hand report from a non-ham to you Must be accurate, detailed, and timely Are NOT reports heard on a scanner from police, fire, EMA, etc. (they have their own reporting methods) Are NOT reports from broadcast radio or TV

24 2010 SET Major Objectives Conduct an orderly and timely call up of all available Tippecanoe County ARES members for deployment in a medium-to-large scale disaster. (Phonevite) Have participating amateur radio operators use only emergency power. Provide communications support for the Red Cross in a major operation.

25 2010 SET Minor Objectives Establish and maintain reliable, infrastructureindependent communication circuits between multiple locations within Tippecanoe County and surrounding areas. Pass detailed information between various locations. Utilize packet when appropriate for the message content Pass simulated-event traffic

30 2010 SET What Was Done Very Well Lots of stuff! Excellent net discipline and following of net procedures Proper use of tactical call signs Personal call sign use was not excessive Written logs kept by all stations

31 2010 SET Lessons Learned Simultaneous operating capability for net frequency and alternate frequencies ALL active stations should ALWAYS monitor the Operations Net Leaving the primary net frequency to go to an alternate channel to pass traffic should be done only as a last resort Requires permission from Net Control

32 2010 SET Lessons Learned When operating 2 or more radios on the same band at one site, be aware of desense Roll call procedures Net Control calls the TACTICAL CALL SIGN or individual operator call Operator responds with their personal call sign When communicating with Net Control, no need for This is an exercise. Net Control will handle that.

33 2010 SET Lessons Learned Quicker handover by Net Control to 2 stations wishing to go direct Speak slowly and clearly when sending messages Pause naturally (without saying pause ) Consider that the receiving operator must write down the details of your message Quick acknowledgement read-back is almost always in order to verify accurate reception

34 2010 SET Lessons Learned Headphones or headsets for each operator (to be used when needed) No HTs for operators from assigned, fixed locations! Use mobile radios only with a decent, high antenna Some locations could not communicate on simplex Quicker set-up time Net Control Remote locations (packet)
