President s Piece I've just attended the Cornwall Photographic Alliance Annual Competition in Truro. Twelve clubs competed with Prints and DPI, in a spirit of friendly rivalry. Modesty (almost) prevents me from mentioning that the winning club was Wadebridge and District CC, with Camborne-Redruth very close behind. A marvellous evening spent with friends. Very shortly I'm judging the 2012 Devon Battle. Eleven clubs, with lots of excellent photographers, so we should see some very high quality images. The meeting is kindly being sponsored by Permajet, and they will be demonstrating hard and software with particular reference to colour management. Their enthusiastic support for WCPF clubs is very welcome. Tom Gordon's article in this issue describes Sidmouth's experience of these interclub events, which in many ways capture the essence of club photography. The PAGB is having a major review of AV distinctions at the moment. Have a look at the item on page 4, which covers some important aspects. We will keep you informed of further developments, some of which may well affect our own annual AV competition. Pete Fry (Barnstaple) will be taking over the running of that competition from Carole Attrell when she retires at the next AGM. Carole's final competition, last month, went very well. I am pleased to announce the co-option of two new members to the Executive. They are Andy White (Sydenham) and John Palmer (Ivybridge). They both helped effectively with the Members Exhibition this year, and there will be plenty more for them to do as time goes on. We are always pleased to hear from club members who would like to play a part in WCPF affairs, and an application form is available on the website. WCPF will be hosting the PAGB Awards in Photographic Merit (CPAGB, DPAGB, and MPAGB) in November That may seem a long way off, but if you are considering going for an award, you need to start planning for it now. Di Tilsley would be pleased to hear of your interest at this stage. It may just be possible for her to squeeze in another Advice Day if there is sufficient interest from WCPF club members. Please let Di know. And finally... has your club started thinking about your entry for the Kingswood Salver? Five prints from different photographers, judged as a panel. Last year's entries are still on the website, to give an idea of what is required. Closing date is the AGM in October. Brian Galbraith CPAGB 4

A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY to photograph some of the top Venice Carnival costumes in the tranquillity of Lacock Abbey, near Bath Costume wearers will be in attendance during these workshops for you to photograph. To ensure that each photographer gets sufficient time to shoot the six cosutume wearers, there will be a limit of a maximum of 40 delegates per day. The first four sessions will have ten photographers per group, where there will be opportunities to photograph different groups wearing different cosutumes. The cost is 130, which will include a buffet lunch. Booking is essential. Check out full details on the link below. Fancy the real thing? In Venice? Check out the Diary Page for details of a Photographic trip to the Festival in AWARDS FOR MERIT IN AUDIO VISUAL PRODUCTION The PAGB recently agreed the following definition which has received wide support. "An AV Production submitted for a PAGB Award for Photographic Merit should predominantly consist of a sequence of still photographic images, the majority of such images being the original work of the entrant, together with a synchronised sound track. The use of third party images, animated graphics, video clips or other visual material, whilst not excluded, should be limited and appropriate to the production. Entrants must confirm that they have obtained legal consent for the use of any visual or audio material used in the production other than their own original content." The AV Adjudication, scheduled for 20 October 2012, has adoptedthis definition and will be conducted in accordance with previous custom and practice. Now that this definition has been agreed the PAGB Executive has asked the APM Sub Committee to review all the procedures and practices for running Adjudications from They intend to conduct a further wide ranging consultation leading, hopefully, to specific proposals early in If you are involved in Audio Visual as a current or potential producer of AV, as a past or present judge or if you just have an interest in how it may develop in the future and you would like to be involved in this consultation please register an interest with rod@creative-camera.co.uk All input is welcome although we cannot promise individual responses. Archived issues of the PAGB news may be found on the WCPF website - or register here for your own personal copy, and keep up to date with all things photographic. 5

CLARIFICATION ABOUT THE USE OF MUSIC IN AVS Staying with AVs - and returning to an ever-popular, but rather thorny matter! Music Copyright! Peter Fry, in his capacity as AV Secretary Designate, recently wrote to the IAC (Institute of Amateur Cinematographers) on the above subject. His was forwarded to Gerald Mee, their Copyright and Licensing specialist. He has confirmed the statements below as being correct at this point in time. (16 th May 2012) 1. An author of an AV, who is a member of a photographic club which is affiliated to the PAGB, or the club itself a member of IAC ( annually), or is personally a member of the RPS, can use Library/production music (Non-commercial music/recordings) in an AV providing he or she has a IAC license ( 8.54 annually but only includes the MCPS & BPI licenses). 2. An author of an AV, who is a member of a photographic club which is affiliated to the PAGB, or the club itself is a member of IAC ( annually), or is personally a member of the RPS, cannot use commercial music/ recordings (even if purchased officially and can prove ownership with receipts) in an AV, unless they themselves are a member of IAC ( annually) and have an IAC license ( 7.17 annually and includes MCPS, BPI & PPL licenses). The IAC have an agreement with YouTube that providing the above rules are applied, AV s would be legal and could play on YouTube as often as required. This does mean for those who use commercial music in their AV s, an annual membership of plus a 7.17 license fees would be payable. The answer for those who don t want to pay the is to use royalty free/noncommercial music! (although a 8.54 license is still need) I can hear the groans! As a matter of interest, any AV uploaded on YouTube is removed by automatically by music copy protection software. However it can be reinstated once a simple declaration form is completed along with the IAC licensing details. Music Copyright in AVs has long been a somewhat puzzling matter, so it is hoped this will clear up any misunderstanding! Extracted from an from Peter Fry. 6

OUT OF THE RUT? Maybe we may have been getting into a rut with club competition photography? Similar images crop up time and again. Three come to mind right away. One is of the deserted jetty, taken from the shore and jutting over a placid lake with or without a sunset. Another is the evening shot of a sea cliff on the left with the last of the sun lighting wet foreground rocks and with what looks like a sea mist but is really the effect of a long exposure of the shallow waves. On a smaller scale, we might happily go a year or two without yet another shot of Damsel Flies mating. It s almost as if we are required to repeat these images in order to qualify for some unspecified distinction1 Some locations seem to be on the must take it list. A certain mandatory view of Rannoch Moor was said to be found by looking for the deep tripod marks left by earlier visitors and Stonehenge, Clevedon Pier and Eileen Donan Castle come up with tedious regularity in club competitions. Subject and location are not the whole story. My own club once invited a celebrated landscape photographer to come along and show us his work. We gasped at the quality of the first few prints he put up, all taken close to sunset or sunrise. By the tea break we were getting a bit weary of low sun images and at the end of the evening we were desperate for a green tree or a verdant meadow to provide some relief from the plethora of orange photographs. End of the day landscapes may satisfy commercial demand and there is much to be said for a low angle of lighting but does it mean we have to adopt it as mandatory? Most of us are out and about in the middle hours of the day to enjoy a sunlit countryside and perhaps we should make more effort to capture the essence of what delights us in good daylight. What can be done to prise us from the deepening rut of convention? One remedy may lie in having more set subject competitions rather than open ones. Some clubs have a lot of these already and it is exciting to see the variety and creativity which results. Much rests with the person setting the subjects. Intangible titles seem to produce the best images because they usually allow wide and varied interpretation and stretch the creativity of the photographer. Perhaps try Flight rather than Aircraft, Weather instead of Clouds and so on and be amazed at what results. Clubman was confirmed in this on seeing the commended images from this year s Knightshayes Trophy. The subject, Co-operation, had been interpreted in an impressive number of original ways by those who had taken up the challenge Next year the subject is Wrecked and that should keep us well away from Damsel Flies and Rannoch Moor! CLUBMAN 7

Sidmouth's Inter-Club Battles Each season Sidmouth Photographic Club engages in two inter-club Battles. The first is a one-to-one Battle with Torbay Club and the second is a five club Battle called the Horseshoe Trophy. The Torbay Battle The venue alternates and this season it was at Sidmouth, the judge being Ian Bolton from Lyme Bay. The event took place on 30th November In the first half of the evening there were 12 prints from each club, all open subject, and the judge gave each print a mark out of 20. The aggregate was comfortably in Sidmouth's favour, Sidmouth's top two prints, both scoring a maximum 20 points, were -... and... Tangled Web by Keith Urwin Brighton Domes by Diane Emms The second half was similar but with Projected Digital images instead of prints. Torbay were in much better form and won Torbay's top two digital images, both scoring 20 points, were -... and... Evening Light by Andy Cosway Beautiful Zoe by Clive Figes The total aggregate winners were Sidmouth Club, The Horseshoe Trophy This Battle is between Sidmouth, Exmouth, Chard, Lyme Bay and Honiton. The clubs take turns to organise the event and this season Honiton were the hosts. The date was 31st March 2012, the venue Kilmington Village Hall and the judge was John Harmsworth from Wellington. 8

In the first half of the evening each club submitted five prints on five different set subjects and the judge ranked the prints from one to five in each subject. The scorers then allocated marks in each subject : five points for the top print down to one point for the lowest print. Sidmouth had the top print in every subject and so had a maximum score of 25 points. The other scores were : Chard 16, Exmouth 14, Lyme Bay 12.5, Honiton 7.5. Two of the top scoring prints by Sidmouth were -... and... White on Black by Julian Shaw News at Ten by Ted Smith The second half was similar to the first half but with subjects of a general nature. Exmouth led the scoring with 20 marks and the other clubs were : Sidmouth 17.5, Lyme Bay 15, Chard 11.5 and Honiton 11. Two top scoring prints by Exmouth were -... and... Limestone Pavement and Intensity both by Sheila Haycox The final aggregate scores were: Sidmouth Exmouth 34, Chard 27.5, Lyme Bay 27.5 and Honiton Tom Gordon : Sidmouth Photographic Club 9

AN APOLOGY! Some of you may have noticed that there was no April newsletter! I wasn t exactly inundated with letters of complaint (thankfully!!) but I do wonder just how many readers I have? Anyway - back to the reason for the non-appearance of the newsletter! My dearly-beloved chose not to obey she who must be obeyed (an oxymoron if every there was one!) and climbed a ladder, unattended, then fell off! Result - a dislocated and broken ankle just before Easter! A week in hospital; a plating and pinning job, saw him doing the Easter Bunny Hop for a good four weeks. Her Indoors has been run ragged, what with the usual washing, ironing, cooking, cleaning, shopping and gardening chores. Add to that, chauffeur and chief hospital visitor - and you will soon realise time was of the essence - and I was totally shattered by 9.00pm! The war-wound! Compensated for nicely by some TLC from the nurses! Happily, the patient is well on the road to recovery - albeit a little stir crazy!! Mike - in a jam (jar!) now sporting a fetching Cyber-boot. Very sexy! Only another four weeks before he can drive again!! Ann - `Newsletter Editor 11
